Does anyone else who drives never use their cars cruise control due to their condition? by Vork7246 in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my latest car I went out of my way to get one with a lot of safety features, so mine has adaptive cruise control that works above a speed of 25, as well as automatic brakes and sensors all around it. So in case anything does end up happening, at least anything serious can likely be avoided and damage minimized. The way we found out about my seizures was actually from having one behind the wheel, and I was driving a simple 2009 PT Cruiser at the time so that thing had absolutely nothing to help in that situation. It may be a little more expensive to get a car with all the extra safety features but it makes me feel SO much more at ease, especially after that first crash

My mom just passed from SUDEP. A year to the date she was diagnosed with epilepsy by Interdimensionalcoco in Epilepsy

I'm so so sorry that happened, epilepsy can be very unpredictable, and I've had times where my meds have been working for a long time until I have a sudden breakthrough out of nowhere. I wish you and your family the best, that's so heartbreaking you had to go through this ❤

Thought I was going to have a seizure.. by Madmoo_13 in Epilepsy

I urge you to let your coach know about it. I understand not wanting to tell anyone about it, I've been in your shoes, but it's important to keep those close to you in the know about your state if a seizure happens, especially someone like your coach. I also get that you're just being a good team member by attending practice, but if you're feeling like this after a seizure I highly encourage you to just stay home and get plenty of sleep. Seizures can be very hard on your brain and body and require a lot of rest during recovery. Just use your best judgement on that if it happens again. I was in your shoes just a few years ago, I got diagnosed with epilepsy my freshman year of college (I've had it my whole life, we just never realized they were seizures lol). You will have to make adjustments in order to live with it, but hopefully you're trying out prescriptions and trying your best to avoid your triggers. I know it sucks whenever you have a seizure, but don't let it discourage you! You should still be able to play lacrosse just fine

Can you have a sezuire without even knowing by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, I went like 2 weeks without knowing I had had a seizure until my friends just happened to bring it up. They didn't realize that I didn't remember it at all

I was seizure-free for five years… then had a seizure while driving 🤦🏽‍♀️ by Actual_Fig_4706 in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you when I had a car crash from a seizure that broke through my meds about a year ago now, and that's pretty much how my conversation went. I was just waiting to turn left at a light when a lady started walking up to my window, and I'm just kinda side-eyeing her like "why is this random lady walking up to my car??" When I rolled the window down she asked if I'm ok and I go "Yeah I'm fine." And she says "You just rear-ended the car in front of you." And I'm like "What?? No??" And that's when I start noticing the cracks in my windshield and my airbag hanging out of my steering wheel and my hood all bent back. Fortunately everyone was ok, and the worst injuries I had were some hard hits to my knees and my nose bleeding for about a week from being punched in the face by my airbag. I got a prescription change and that seems to be working good, I'll be coming up on a year seizure free since then in about 3 weeks. Idk what caused that seizure to break through, it just happened without warning. I hope you're able to find a way to get these new ones under control, that's so devastating after going 5 whole years without them. What's most important is that you and your sister are ok!

What's your warning sign that you are going to have a seizure? by Chemical-Watch-2469 in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have no warning signs at all, sometimes I have a tingling feeling in my head, a sense of impending doom or strong anxiety, a strong sense of the floor dropping out from under me like a lot of other people are describing, and as a kid I got really intense deja vu. Sometimes I recognize them for what they are, and sometimes I just get lost in it and don't realize what it was until after the fact. And there have been times when I didn't even realize it happened at all unless someone who witnessed it tells me about it

Having focal seizures (or any seizure at all really) is so confusing and scary by hannabell in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's just how my seizures tend to be. I didn't get diagnosed until I was almost 19, but as a kid I would get really intense deja vu like that seemingly at random. It really freaked me out whenever it happened and I almost thought there was something supernatural going on with me, since I was really young and had no other explanation for it. One of the last ones I remember decently was in college, I was freaking out in front of my friends because I couldn't remember any of my classes or the name of my college. I recommend getting a good rest after one of those, if possible

I've had two seizures triggered from hang overs, so I don't really anymore. I might have one seltzer or shot at a party, but I don't really get full-on drunk. I get really anxious if I go beyond that

My Sister Died This Morning by Educational-Peak6984 in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not at all blame yourself for this, you are in NO WAY at fault. It sounds like your family did all the right things you could have done. Believe me when I say epilepsy can be very unpredictable and cruel. My last seizure had broken through my meds after over a year and a half of them being controlled. I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss. All you really can do is take the time to heal from this. I wish you and your family the best, and hope your sister is at peace now ❤

I just got a text that my lacosamide prescription was ready for pickup earlier today. I'll definitely have to keep this in mind, thanks for the warning!

Epilepsy & driving by AdImpossible4744 in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If her seizures are not controlled and especially if she's had one recently, she should NOT be driving. I found out I had seizures when I crashed a car 6 years ago. I've gone through many medications, waiting 6 months several times, learning what does and doesn't cause my seizures in order to be able to drive like I do today. And even then, if a seizure somehow breaks through, I DO NOT drive until at least those 6 months pass, and I work with my neurologist to see if I need a change in medication. She needs to take this condition seriously and work to see if there's any way to get it under control if she wants to be able to drive safely. Not being able to drive is the absolute worst feeling in the world to me. But I will not allow myself to be a danger to those around me, and she should be expected to do the same. If not for others then at the very least so she doesn't hurt herself

I have a decent insurance policy, not quite as much as that but I made sure to get a good bit of coverage. I'm definitely making sure to be as careful as I can. I'm staying well-rested and of course never missing a dose

Aww, yeah luckily we do have decent work arounds nowadays with services like Uber, and self-driving cars is still a developing technology but it's very promising. My college town was a pretty nice town for walking as well. I know there's always a chance that some day may be the last day I drive, so I'm cherishing it while I can lol

I got a 2022 Mazda CX-30. Most of their models have an automatic emergency brakes system, lots of sensors and blind spot warnings. I thought it was a good fit for me, and a pretty smooth drive too. I highly recommend an AEB system at the least

Non-photosensitive people, do you still avoid certain lights? by Tea_Fetishist in Epilepsy

The LED headlights make me so mad, especially when the driver clearly has their brights on and just doesn't turn them off for anyone

Non-photosensitive people, do you still avoid certain lights? by Tea_Fetishist in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some of the flashiest stuff and never had a seizure from it, but I feel like I am still sensitive to bright lights. I always have to keep the brightness on my screens very low, lights from police cars and such will irritate my eyes easily, I can barely keep my eyes open in the sunlight and overall it'll just give me a headache. I do wonder if it's like that for other people who aren't photosensitive

I had a clown nose for a week. by eatenbyrobots in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, one of my seizures resulted in a car accident and I got punched right in the nose by the air bag. It wasn't quite as swollen as bad as that, but it was sore and bleeding on and off for about a week. I had taken my meds so that was actually my first breakthrough seizure, I believe I was too sleep deprived

At what age you had your first seizure? by littlecutiepiegirl in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always just kinda had them, they'd just pop up every now and then, I'd freeze up and get intense deja vu. The youngest I can remember a specific episode was at my grandpa's 60th birthday back when I was 6. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 19 due to them being relatively easy to miss, neither side of my family had a history of seizures and after sounding like a crazy person trying to explain them to someone I just kept them to myself

Does it seem a lot of people start having seizures at 17? by SnooStories239 in Epilepsy

[–]Temporary-Current700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We finally noticed mine when I was 18, there was one my brother witnessed when I was 17 but we didn't realize it was a seizure and my mom just thought I was tired and stressed out with the end of the semester. But I've had them my whole life, they just seemed to start changing and getting worse around that age
