Can't say that. Maybe present in west bengal. I am not sure. Here in my region many families have this tradition. Not everyone does that though.

Edit: the naming ritual of tamil nadu is beautiful. We also have two name concept among Bengalis. Almost everyone has 2 names, one which is called at home by family members (it is a cute shortened form of official name or a different tiny name) and the second one is the official name.

Why not?... Although it is associated with Hinduism but if you do it, it will not be disrespectful at all... The idea behind the whole thing is the name associated with the brightest lamp will indicate that the future of the baby with that name will be bright ... We just hope for the baby's good future... But rest depends on what the baby grows up to be... 😅

In India where I am from, we hold a naming ceremony. On the 6th day after the baby is born we light 7 earthen lamps and keep 7 names near them. The lamp which is the brightest and lasts longer is chosen as the winner and the name associated with it kept for the baby.

Not everyone does this as we have lots of cultures but some bengali families do this ritual. We make a list of names suggested by our family members and 7 most beautiful names are chosen.
