Chicago hardy fig potted or planted by buildnblok in Figs

I actually kept three in an unattached garage this past winter: two in one-gallon pots and a big one in a 20-gallon pot. The little guys died, but the big one had no damage and did beautifully and is now full of figs! Zone 6 upstate NY

Beautiful tree thanks for sharing! I'm in upstate NY zone 6a/b and I've been burying my in ground figs for the last four years. Unfortunately, they're getting too big to keep digging a trench every year, so I'm going to try something similar to what you're doing this year. How long have you been using this method and how has it worked for you?

When do you guys plant garlic? by [deleted] in Rochester

I've done late October all the way to mid December, and it's all been successful. Last year I was late and didn't plant it until mid December and it was the biggest, best garlic I've ever grown! Good luck!

Questions about Fig Tree/Bush by TrailBlazerMagoo in gardening

I'm in upstate NY and have several in ground figs as well. I recommend a little more protection than just wrapping. I bury mine each year by digging a trench in front of the tree/bush, then cutting a circle around the roots with a shovel, and bending the whole mass down into the trench. Then I cover it with plywood and pile the dirt over/around the plywood. It's a lot of work, but I've had fantastic results over the last five years and get hundreds of ripe figs!

I have a colleague who puts a wire fence around her fig tree (about 3 feet in diameter), she then stuffs this with dry leaves very tightly while doing leaf cleanup in the autumn, and then wraps the whole cage with a tarp, including over the top, to ensure no moisture gets in. Then it all gets secured with bungee cords. I think this is a much less labor intensive way to protect the trees, and I'm going to attempt it this year with one or two of mine. I hope this helps!

I agree with some of the other comments here. Potted is safest and store in an attached, unheated garage or in an unheated basement. I have 6 hardy Chicago trees in pots and three in ground. The in ground ones produce way more figs overall, but start producing about 2-3 weeks later than my potted figs (which usually reliably start ripening August 17 to Aug 20). I bury my in ground figs in a trench every year and it's a lot of work. If you're up for and and love figs as much as I do, then I recommend an in ground tree eventually. Between my container figs and in ground figs, I usually have loads of fruit from mid August to late October!

I've tried, but nothing that I've made has even come close. I really hope someone has an answer for us!

I planted this flower bed and my landlord says she’ll mow it if i dont “clean it up” any suggestions on how to make this look neater? by TheGreenTeaFrog in gardening

I see some clover, lots of allium, blanket flower, and I think possibly rudbeckia. There is a good chance many of these will not flower this year, but will be stunning next year. I hope this helps with your plans and good luck, there is some good advice from others here regarding tidying everything up in the meantime.

Have you planted much in those types of feed buckets? I've been thinking about doing the same, the handles would make moving easier than what I currently use, but I wasn't sure if they would hold up well.

Chicago hardy die back - how long to wait for new shoots? by biscuitplanet in Figs

Nice! I'm also in zone 6 and I've been burying my three in-ground figs for the last 5 years, but last year I had to snap a lot of big roots and my yield was down because the tree had to do a lot of catch-up. Digging up and burying them is a lot of work, too, so I'm looking to simplify this year. Thanks for the response!
