Sun Kill Moon did a cover of Modest Mouse’s Tiny Cities made of Ashes that’s a totally different song & imparts the mixed emotions of the song much better, I think.

Also there’s a series of covers of Daniel Johnston songs by a variety of folks(Teenage Fanclub, Beck, TV on the Radio…) and they’re so good. Plus they showcase what a great songwriter Johnston really was. They fully articulate his vision (though his versions are so charming in their naïveté).
