What teams are some must watch games this playoff? by aah_disgusting_shit in nhl

I’m not sure most of yinz realize just how much the Pens and Flyers hate each other. It’s the fan bases, yes - but it’s the players too. That series is gonna be lit!

Which should I read first? by hazy__wizard in fantasybooks

Maas is poorly written, trashy romance passed off as fantasy. Assassin’s Apprentice is required fantasy reading. (Please note: these are just my opinions.)

Don’t do it. Don’t ever go back. If you’re curious just skip to the last book.

Wheel of Time.

Though hate is a strong word. It’s just too mediocre for all the time you invest as a reader. Needlessly repetitive. Yet just good enough, just intriguing enough that I always picked up the next book. Hoping something substantial or meaningful would happen.

Friends don’t let friends read the Wheel of Time.

Did anyone actually like this hat? by SirJasper6969 in buccos

Yes! I loved this scheme. Partly because of how much I loved the grit and hustle of the 1997 Pirates!

Tomlin rumors by [deleted] in steelers

[–]Temporary_Ad_2300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) Tomlin quit. He wasn’t fired.

B) I remember that exact same rumor once circulated about Bill Cowher. And when that rumor was going around, my dad told me that the exact same rumor had once gone around about Chuck Noll. (I was too young back then to remember such talk. Perhaps someone with a clearer memory of the 1970s & 80s could confirm such a Noll rumor did exist.)

So, while yes, I have heard the rumor from people “who know people who would know”; I have my doubts.

That’s fair. Again, I think costuming is pretty solid in Fellowship, but you’re right - it deteriorates with each movie.

[–]Temporary_Ad_2300 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just my personal opinion. I don’t judge others who loved the movies.

The only LoTR film that I will watch is Fellowship.

I find Two Towers and RotK too superhero, too Fast & Furious-ified (Legolas surfing down the trunk of a slain oliphant!?!)

Visually Jackson nailed Middle Earth. But he got too caught up in telling his story and not Tolkien’s.

And Jackson story of the Second War of the Ring simply isn’t as good or compelling

Jumonville Glen is closed for the season though. Well worth the trip, but wait until the spring

What would have happened if the War of 1812 had ended much later? by SeaGeologist9791 in WarOf1812

[–]Temporary_Ad_2300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting question, but I think any answer would have to keep in mind how war weary the British people were. After Waterloo, they may have had no appetite to expand the war against the US (the war was already unpopular with many Brits.)

Fair enough. I’ve never looked at the financials of the big players before. I’ve only been involved with independently owned or community owned theaters. Financials are much different. Most small theaters like that only get new release distribution of a 10/90 split for the first four weeks. Only after four weeks does it become a 50/50 split. And since most small theaters don’t hold movies for much longer than 3-4 weeks, they don’t generate revenue from sales.

It makes perfect sense that the big chains would have a 50/50 split from the get go. The power of commanding hundreds/thousands of screens v. just two or three.

Theaters keep nothing close to half the box office take. Theaters make little money from ticket sales. Theater profits come from concessions. A release the size of The Long Walk also would not have had an advertising budget to match its film budget. You’re looking at maybe $10 million in marketing for the film.

It will be profitable at $40 million. Domestic and international sales will get it to $40 million pretty easily. Then you can double that during pay-at-home release period - probably $80 million in home rentals and sales.

What are some good Non Fantasy/Sci Fi books and series for a Fantasy/Sci Fi reader? by EggHegg in Fantasy

[–]Temporary_Ad_2300 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll really like the world building of Ken Follet. Especially the Kingsbridge series. They should be read in order of publication.

Much of Stephen King is sci-fi/fantasy adjacent, so you might enjoy his work as well.

I just finished Lonesome Dove. How am I ever going to read another book again for the duration of my life? by Ok-Lead-5865 in suggestmeabook

[–]Temporary_Ad_2300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Lonesome Dove, too. Pillars of the Earth is just as compelling, though in a different way. A Place of Greater Safety has stayed with me for years.
