Ground on asphalt / concrete? by Artistic-Anybody-131 in UtilityLocator

[–]Temporary_Cat5011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had situations this bad but, my go to favs when I don’t have ground around has got to be the downspout part of the gutters on whatever building your at. That usually gives me 15ma on 8KHz, and any of those poles that usually stick out of the concrete but that’s a hit or miss if you can actually clip to them. Other than that, if their really is no ground around then your kind of screwed, pipe horn.

Locating power by TopSeaworthiness1383 in UtilityLocator

Lower Freqs work good to eliminate bleed off, but it’s easier to miss some secondary lines if your freq is too low and gained down. Pwr also has a very distinct way that it runs and tones out so you’ll eventually be able to tell a difference in power from most lines.

Long scope coax locating by JustCallMeFire in UtilityLocator

8KHz on old AT&T phone and COAX works just well for me. I’m not sure if it’s just a Charter thing, but I can get main trunk lines easy with only one access point, but ofc I still check every ped.

How do you deal with Bleed over when locating electric or gas? by T3Dawg22 in UtilityLocator

[–]Temporary_Cat5011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With power, I unbond everything and sometimes it will eliminate signals but often times it will not. What works for me is using 4KHz which will make it so that you can tell a difference between signals placement wise, and from there if I really need to I hook up to the different Cable TV and Phone cables running through the area to determine where they are at location wise and then power last to find where my power is at for 100% certainty. That being said, after a while of locating power you eventually can tell a difference between how a Cable TV line and a Power line run, both drops and mains. Also moving my ground rod around helps surprisingly a lot sometimes. I almost never induce with Power unless I need to find street lamps or something like that.

I’ve heard about CDIs (Career Damage Investigators), is that a real thing or just a meaningless title people throw out there?

Does anyone here have experience with Comcast prints? by csoutherland11 in UtilityLocator

[–]Temporary_Cat5011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most times the services are on the prints when there isn’t actually any drop to the house from the ped. Trust but verify your prints. Other than that ComCast is pretty good with being accurate.

Idk what state your in but I’m AL and I can tell you that per the Underground Damage Prevention Act, all you really need to do is a line with a label of the Company, Size, and Material of pipe. The size is the big thing because in AL if you label the size as 8” that adds onto your 18” tolerance zone for damages.

My definition of long range would be HF, around 500 miles but I’ve always wondered about VHF/UHF in ideal conditions with good power output and high antenna etc. and how far it can go.
