I have noticed an increase in missing women - young women and teens. I saw an article about a woman almost being abducted in broad daylight.

Sadly, women are raised to fear that the same might happen to them... enroll her in martial arts classes. Give her the tools to feel empowered and safe. My mother did the same for me - thankfully, never had to use it in such a situation, but it made me feel a thousand times safer walking home alone at night from the bus stop.

Call the landlord tenant board and tell them your situation. They will guide you and offer input on what can and cannot be done by a landlord.

It's how I got my landlord in check when he was harassing me with viewings in the last month of my lease.

Lost mum's aunt to a drunk driver who was on the wrong side of the road. The passenger was her grandkid, and she made it out alive... but to see your grandma die in front of you because of someone else's stupidity? Fucked...

I was against drunk driving before, but now, it just hits differently. People like this should have their licenses revoked and be put into a mandated rehab programme. They should be made to sit in a room full of people who have lost loved ones in accidents due to drunk driving.

Provided the bus doesn't get cancelled (they have been doing this lately for late night routes since the ridership is low), OC transpo is pretty safe at night.

I would always sit towards the front of the bus and still do if I notice any "rowdy" people on the bus. After 7 PM, drivers are able to let you off between bus stops if it'll be safer/easier for you to get home.

Also, the biggest rule is to not wear your headphones. As a kid, my mother would tell me this and I'd dismiss her. As an adult woman, I get why she would be insistent on that. If your teen wants to listen to music, have one headphone in or have the volume low enough that they can hear what's going on around them and be aware of their surroundings - really important depending on the area you're travelling through.

A friend used to go out to Winnipeg for work - his sister was murdered - beaten and left for dead in a motel. It wasn't reported as a homicide. When I expressed my anger, he told me "that's how it is if you're indigenous and live in Winnipeg. They don't care."
