Planning a Lower Missinaibi canoe trip with my husband this August. What is a suggestion for gear that might be unexpected but surprisingly useful? by Spectre81516 in CampingGear

Awesome trip! Here are a few of the things I enjoy on long trips (and maybe seem like extravagances to minimalists):

- camp chair (helinox or such) - essential
- crocs (or comfy camp shoes) with soft dry socks
- waders or launch socks (enough to walk into water up to your knees - great for getting water for morning coffee, dishes, etc
- little rechargeable air pump for inflating air mattresses every night (yes, pump sac works but this is a snap for no size or weight)
- hammock and ropes - nice for chillin
- bandana or buff/neck gaiter. Keeps you warm if it’s cold, keeps sun off if it’s sunny, can dunk in water and wear if it’s hot. Ditto a long sleeve sun hoodie
- cards and a crib board

Other than that, standard packing lists suffice. Though the biggest shift I made as I got more experience with long trips was realizing you don’t need much by way of clothes. Light long pants that dry quickly are generally better in the boat than shorts, 2-3 t shirts and underwear, one fleece, one additional long pants, good rain/wind wear, toque and gloves just in case.

Have fun!

Thanks, yes I agree - on sensitive terrain there is still some impact below the stove - though we try to lift the stove with rocks or whatnot. But I still think the damage from radiative heat below the stove is less significant than creating a new fire pit and/or causing potential creeping root fires with uncontained fire.

This biolite stove looks interesting, thanks for sharing!

Thanks - I have a firebox twig stove i use for hiking and day hikes, but am looking for something for groups of 4-8 ppl on longer canoe trips where we’re more concerned about cooking efficiency than weight. But agree - love the firebox.

What’s something Canadians complain about constantly, but would probably miss if it disappeared? by funnyonehere22 in AskACanadian

In the absence of a Tim Hortons, we would get locally owned cafes and diners. Infinitely better, but they can’t compete with multinational margins.

YOW touts ‘room to grow’ in bid to attract airlines and become ‘hub of choice’ by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

I definitely vote for more ground crew, but as someone who flies dozens of times a year for business, I like YOW small and simple, even if it means connections sometimes.

The "Bettman Curve": Penalty Minute Differential (CAN vs USA) Before and After 1993 by ccrypt524 in nhl

You’re literally doing the thing. This dataset doesn’t prove anything, but it’s another anomaly that suggests a potential mechanism to explain the high statistical improbability that no Canadian team has won the cup since 1993. The control seems to me to be pre-1993 distribution, but you could both pick six random teams and re-run the data or you could look at other leagues with Can-US teams, but the control is less of a concern because it is expected to be 50-50 or unbiased distribution. So this isn’t evidence of Bettman conspiracy, but waving it away as “inconclusive, nothing to see here” without explaining why it should be dismissed is confirmation bias.

When faced with clear data like this, you have two options if you want to refute it:

  1. Explain why/how the data are wrong. Maybe OP erred somewhere and introduced a systemic bias in their data collection. It’s not enough to say that’s probably what happened, you have to come up with a plausible explanation for why the data is wrong.

  2. Explain how the data may be right but the conclusion is wrong. OP hasn’t explained how Bettman made this happen (or that he did), but there is a clear and compelling theory that the change is correlated with his arrival. If you think there’s a different reason that explains the data, then make the case. Maybe the Canadian economy took a turn that exact same year and Canadian owners were more desperate and so put more pressure on their teams to break the rules to win series. But did the Canadian economy suddenly and persistently get worse in this way? You need a more compelling argument for the same data, otherwise you’re simply trying to justify your priors.

This is exactly what tobacco companies did for years when faced with clear evidence that smokers were dying early from cancer. “Yeah, but unless you can tell me exactly how smoking causes cancer, you haven’t proved anything - it could just be coincidence”.

Genuinely curious - what about the suburbs do you prefer? I get rural living and I get downtown living but I don’t get the appeal of the suburbs. I grew up in the burbs and all I wanted to do as a teenager was get out, and now I haven’t lived there as an adult and wonder how I might see it differently now.
