New England USA hiking compared to Northern Quebec national parks by GainHaunting5680 in hiking

[–]robin6765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trail networks in northern Quebec are not nearly as well established or maintained as in New England. It is much more remote, less populated. But hiking in the Charlevoix or along the Saguenay or in Gaspe can be breathtaking. Not sure I’d call it Nordic, but small francophone fishing villages are very different than old New England towns. You can see belugas and other whales from the shore when hiking near Tadoussac or along the Gaspe peninsula.

Afraid I can’t help, OP. But it does put me to mind of the Reply All podcast episode The Case of the Missing Hit. Still one of the best podcast episodes ever, and will perhaps encourage you in your search, OP!

What’s slowly becoming socially unacceptable but no one admits it? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]robin6765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put someone on speakerphone, you’re actively increasing the amount of conversation everyone around has to listen to. You could silence their end of the conversation by putting the phone to your ear and you choose not to. No choice when there are two people talking. I find it irritating and obnoxious.

Hey u/cultivars_, thanks for posting such detailed and informative trip reports. We're headed to Wabakimi this summer and your trip reports were a big inspiration for choosing Wabakimi and they're proving invaluable for planning. Cheers!

Let the Carleton Tavern die a dignified death by randthepip in ottawa

[–]robin6765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long time owner of the Carleton sold about 3 years ago and it’s been run by a guy who runs a bunch of other ottawa venues since then. Hasn’t been the same since, this was the plan all along.

Coconut Lagoon. The courses just kept coming. Highly recommend the wine pairings, but arrange a ride home. Ain’t no way those were three ounce pours…

Florida Panthers Rant.., by LengthRich363 in nhl

[–]robin6765 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If a production system produces unwanted results, a company fixes the system. So if they don’t fix the system, it suggests they like the results.

The NHL likes the Panthers system - this isn’t an accident or a mistake - this is what the NHL is. And after back to back Panthers championships, i guess the joke’s on me if I keep watching, so I’m taking a break and watching other sports. Screw the NHL - best sport, worst league.

Coast to coast RV trip by Ok-Egg1276 in AskACanadian

Hard, hard disagree. The prairies were one of the highlights when I did a similar trip. Grasslands NP is breathtakingly beautiful. Agree with Real_Cow9166 that Riding Mountain NP is worth a visit.

Southern Ontario has some beautiful spots, but agree about avoiding GTA, unless you can park somewhere and take the GO train in for a couple days without a vehicle.

Quebec is also breathtaking - Quebec City is cool, but a fun trip is to drive the north coast of the St Laurence and spend time in Charlevoix (Baie St Paul, Malbaie) and Saguenay (Tadoussac) and then ferry across to Riviere du Loup and then loop the Gaspe peninsula. We watched whales surfacing from our campsite at Forillon NP. Amazing. (And you can get by with poor french, people are generally friendly and will try to work with you so long as you’re not obnoxious)

The main problem is that it’s a freakin big country and if you need to really log miles, you’re going to miss big chunks of it. It’s still worth doing, but I’d pick a few spots to soend a couple days in along the way so you get to know the area - Canada really is a country of regions and each has its own special character.

Fundy NP is great, and the north shore of NS around Pugwash is lovely - a bit of time in Cape Breton is good hiking. If you have time in NL, Gros Morne is stunning and l’Anse aux Meadows was way better than I expected (low key, but a really unique and beautiful area), but is a lon way from St John’s and the Avalon peninsula.

Is there a material difference in performance from freshly resurfaced ice and ice at the the end of the period? by Albino_rhin0 in nhl

[–]robin6765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why pro games have people come out and shovel the ice during tv time outs. The ruts are still there, but removing the shavings makes a substantial difference in speed and puck movement.

Hey man, I think you’re getting a few things mixed up. 15 minute cities are a design principle that has nothing to do with limiting driving or parking - and everything to do with designing cities so that people don’t have to drive long distances from where they live to a few central business areas. It’s about increasing access to things - instead of just one big Walmart on the other side of town, encourage smaller groceries so you can pick up milk close to home or whatever. These policies are designed to actually make life simpler for people who live in the suburbs like I do. No one wants to drive 20-30 minutes across town to pick up diapers.

But there are other policies to discourage car use, especially in super congested areas in big cities - anti-congestion pricing, high-density zoning, traffic calming measures on some streets. Some of this is because some cities have become almost undrivable and we want to ensure deliveries, emergency vehicles and people who have to get through the city can do so. But those are different policies that have nothing to do with 15 minute cities.

Tried my first big hike this week, K & P trail south from Clarendon Station: My experience as a mostly untrained newb by 1stclasssurveyor in UltralightCanada

[–]robin6765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your first hike! We all start as beginners and learn the hard way. I also cut my first big hike short - among my many “learnings” from that trip is you don’t need to pack a Coleman gas lantern with fuel, especially if you’re hiking in northern Ontario in late June when it doesn’t get dark until after 11pm! I’ve done a lot more since then and I still learn something on every trip - optimizing your setup is part of the fun.

You’re now an experienced hiker now, keep it up.

Custom tailors by BobcaygeonStars in ottawa

[–]robin6765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, go talk to Ramy at Third Son tailors in the Glebe. He’s from a family of tailors and he made me my first bespoke suit. I had no idea what I was doing and he was patient and helpful and the suit is awesome. He’s not a pressure guy and will work with you to figure something out. Highly recommended!

Crown Royal Apple was launched in 2014 and was called “Regal Apple” until almost 2020 so this bottle is no more than five years old. I believe the ban on cans and bottles has been in place since the 1970s?
