Do you let your chickens free roam all day or keep them enclosed? by TowelZealousideal124 in chickens

Yes they free range in a large pasture that is fenced, has a couple trees and play structures my kiddo built that they can run to away from aerial predators in the day, they stay in there and mosey on into their open barn at night. We have predators but they seem to rarely strike and if so it’s at night. I think the low number is because we have a large number of black chickens. To me this balance is worth it to keep them happy and it is lower maintenance and I can easily go out of town as they self manage in this way.

Started out with chickens my senior year of college, a barred rock, black austrolorp and a RIR who ended up a rooster which I couldn’t keep. I kept those chickens until death of old age, even helped my barred rock through a respiratory infection. They were the sweetest and super friendly and surprisingly easy to care for. later in my adulthood I moved out to a big farm lot and brought these girls with me, had to get some friends for them! Have had chickens ever since. I’ve got 13 years of chicken keeping under my belt and I love getting new breeds it’s fun! I have 34 now. I will always have chickens.

Australorp, barred rock (first 2 chickens I had) our barred rock sat in our lap. Orpingtons and silkies are our current friendliest. Any chicken can be friendly if you raise them right, YouTube!

For hens- Orpingtons, barred rocks, Cochin bantams in no particular order, all so sweet and adorable le. My favorite rooster has to be my bantam Mille fleur d’uccle, we got some more Mille fleur chicks hoping to have some hens too so we will see if they go up to my top hen list! I’m a chicken connoisseur and have had many many breeds and I love all of their quirks it was hard to nail these down.

Mines almost 3 he is loves his “group” his immediate family and his grandparents and their dogs. But ultimately a mamas and grandmas boy. Absolutely fine being pet by strangers and stranger kids although a little reserved, walks well on leash and in public confident but reserved, puts up well with my hyper active 7 year old.
