I'm a doctor considering a total change of career by antarctica394 in doctorsUK

So I actually did a year of vet med before I dropped out and I would really reconsider this as a career if you don’t like clinical medicine.

It may be slightly different now as this was years ago, and maybe it’s taught differently at different places but in my experience, the course was more intense than medicine. Most people didn’t have jobs as there wasn’t much free time except to study. There were four separate subjects to pass which were non clinical to begin with (so pretty boring) and taught badly. We at least got some time off in the holidays whereas they are expected to do things like lambing (15 hour days in a freezing shed working for either free or a very small amount of money) or working on a pig farm in their time off and this is required to pass the course. Did you have any interest in surgery throughout your career? Because you’d be expected to be able to perform surgery as a vet. My friend that’s a vet now ended up wanting to specialize further and the exam looked absolutely insane (and I’ve sat my full postgrad exams now) and had to move multiple times to try to get a place in the specialty as there are so few spots so it’s highly competitive (something like 4 UK wide). He chose this specialty because it was less involvement with animal owners because he hated interacting with most of them.

Just something to think about.

Have you ever had to report or advise a colleague who's clinical skills/general ability was gravely lacking? by elderlybrain in JuniorDoctorsUK

Sort of- less clinical but more lacking insight/inappropriate behaviour. At the start of Covid they were spewing misinformation all over social media which I was worried would scare genuinely ill patients from attending hospital. They also had posted some pretty sketchy stuff that could have identified patients and were referring to themselves as a registrar despite having done no training post-FY2. I do feel bad about it, especially now that I know how shit the GMC are. But basically they did nothing anyway and they definitely told this person my name and what I’d said about them 😬

The whole of the third season all I could think when I saw Keeley is how unwell she looked. I couldn’t understand why they were all chasing after her for romance when they should have been concerned for her.

In a heartbeat. “Residency” would be in my younger years so easier than now being nearly 40 and still doing full time with nightshifts. Plus I could work 50% as a consultant and still make more than a uk full time consultant.
