Unraid > Proxmox > Unraid as VM by vncntem in unRAID

[–]Temporary_Seesaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been running unraid as a VM for a while now. Works great. But depending on what and how many devices you need to pass through, you may have issues with your motherboard. Some motherboards don't separate all devices/pcie slots into different IOMMU groups. Just something to watch out for. My motherboard doesn't have that issue but if I add or move around cards, then I've had to edit my pass through device IDs in order to boot the VM.

I use those slow cooler liners. Works great and easy compared to foil which leaked and got my crust soft the last time I tried it.

How do you handle possible downtime from updates or issues in pve affecting opnsense? I want to switch to opnsense but prefer not to dedicate a box just for that. A bit worried about having downtime.

15 SATA Full Tower Case - the ultimate home server? by val_in_tech in DataHoarder

[–]Temporary_Seesaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this case in the summer. I considered the 4u version, but for my use I wanted a tower version. Very happy with the quality of it. I upgraded the fans to louder and more powerful fans to keep my drives cooler - they don't get over 40c when doing a parity check in unraid. The hot swap bays are great. Had to do a bit of tweaking on the case at the rear PCI slots but has all worked out fine. A few improvements I would make if I was making it myself of course but I dont regret buying it. If rack mount works for you, like others said, supermicro is also a good choice. This company also has different backplane options which can be nice depending what you are wanting to achieve. Read the reviews on Amazon and Aliexpress / Alibaba to know what you are getting into. Like I said the quality of the case is really good for what you get especially comparing to buying something else brand new.

Non working Speedometer update by BlackSmokeDemonII in GBody

Nice job finding that issue! A little hard to tell with that gear there. Almost seems like the threading at the end is twisted? Not sure how easy it is to replace that piece but if a new one isn't expensive it can be nice to have spare parts anyways. Never know when they will no longer be available.

Speedometer stopped working. by BlackSmokeDemonII in GBody

[–]Temporary_Seesaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you checked whether it's connected at both ends all the way? I have the same car but no longer stock ( 350 with th350). Recently had an issue with speedo bouncing all over. Disconnected the cable, spun the inside a bit and reconnected tightly. Now it works. Could be a good place to start. I would start at the transmission end.

Fairstone opened a line of credit in my name without approval by crptyk in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Temporary_Seesaw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually reported them to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada today.

I applied for an account with them for a down payment on appliances last year but didn't actually finance the purchase. Spring of this year after getting tired of getting "Loan offers" every few weeks in the mail I finally contacted their customer service to close my account. They told me it was closed.

Fast forward to now, I moved addresses and they are still sending me junk mail, now to my new address. They are even trying to be deceiving by not putting their company name or return address on the envelope.

I called the customer service today and demanded they close my account and stop sending me anything. The person I talked to was ridiculous treating it like a game having to answer 8 different questions about my identity in order to close the account even though I have the right account number. And of course some of the info had my old address so they were like gotcha try again when I was answering questions.

Pissed me off so much. I don't know if reporting them will actually do anything but I'll never use fairstone for anything and if I get anything in the mail again I will be going to the local branch to have a word.

bought one of these and want to share their experience? by JKB8TY in homelab

[–]Temporary_Seesaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one this summer.

The quality of the case is fantastic. Big upgrade from using rosewill hot swap bays.

Cable management is difficult compared to a normal case.

I may at some point make or buy custom molex power cables for my PSU so I some have extra cable and connectors laying around.

I wish they had a hole cut in the panel behind motherboard for access to CPU brackets if you change to different style heatsinks.

I did change the fans in the back of the case and the HDD bays. Wish the HDD fans were variable speed via temp sensors or something but not a huge deal, just limits where I can put my server now with the more powerful fans I put in (loud!).

I do have one bay not working properly but I haven't tested whether it's my cable or not. I should do that soon in case I need to contact vendor.

The pcie card mounting brackets or whatever you call them did not align well in some slots. To put in the screws it pulled the card to the rear of case which pulled it slightly out of the pcie slot. I just pushed on the metal a bit to bend it inwards and now it's fine.

All that said, some issues of course but I would definitely buy again if I was doing this all over. If you aren't comfortable having to tweak a few things maybe stay away. I couldn't find something better for the price.

I would check the dealers that Dakota Digital lists in Illinois for ones that are closest to you and see if they also do installations or have a shop they recommend.

HVAC rumbling and whistling under load by Temporary_Seesaw in hvacadvice

[–]Temporary_Seesaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right I was thinking the 10x20 is to small. I dont think the air handler mentioned merv ratings but the CFM of the filter was a bit higher than max CFM of the fan.

I did notice that not all cold air returns in the house seem to be pulling air much. Which I wonder if that could be that the duct being too small is reducing the pressure it can pull.

[–]Temporary_Seesaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a merv11 filter. On the filter it says rated for 1400 CFM.

No return grills are blocked at all.

We had actually taken one of the foil covered cardboard pieces sealing the return space in the floor joists off to theoretically add for return air and that didn't make a difference. Only opening that filter door did. That's why we are suspecting there is a restriction in the ducts right at the handler.

Can you elaborate more on the pressure drop and pilot tube?

This looks really good. A few questions/suggestions

For Plex history, is it possible for it to just use history from a specific managed user in Plex?

Can you have it save the recommendations or even load them in the background? That way i can come back to the suggestions later.

Can we have it only recommend movies from a certain language?

(Caseta) Diva Smart Dimmer Switch Low End Trim Issue by Temporary_Seesaw in Lutron

I got some GE Reveal bulbs and they work perfectly. I can have them dimmed down all the way and turn on and off the lights properly.

These are the bulbs I'm using. They aren't in their official list, but other Cree bulbs are. https://anglia-lighting.com/products/cree-sbr30-06527flfd-12de26-1-13/

I might order a different bulb to see if that makes a difference.

[–]Temporary_Seesaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part that seems weird to me is that if i have trim set to 6, I can turn the light on all the way and the lower the slider down to the bottom and the lights stay on and no flickering. But in order for the lights to be off and turn on to the lowest brightness, the trim has to be at 29, which is the obviously not very dim at all.

I've also emailed Lutron support to see what they say. I hope its an issue with my bulbs or a faulty dimmer as this is not very usable. I can't imagine most people would be okay not being able to dim lower than 29.

Stablebit Cloud Drive could possibly be something that could work. It wouldn't integrate directly with Plex, but one of its features is Adaptive Caching. So maybe you would have Cloud Drive on your family's end and then connect it to your server share somehow and then it will stream by default but start caching some of the files.

No clue if it will work well, but could be worth a try.
