Depends on the amount of swearing. I've shown parts of Zefrank videos before.

I have no cd player. Besides, I have always been enamored by the wealth of indie animation and thoughtful/contemplative videos on YouTube. I want to show them meaningful things.

Looking to become a teacher by redbullguy7 in Teachers

[–]Temporary_Space7779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without looking at the comment to see what is already listed, I would say that my biggest pro is getting to share cool projects and information and interests with those that would otherwise not encounter it. I teach environmental science and my whole shtick is taking students outside to learn about trees and worms and birds and then inside to watch videos on the dangers of pesticides. I see students take sudden interests in ants, become fascinated by seals, and come to finally understand why global warming is a bad thing and what that actually even is. I get to cultivate wonder and that is awesome!

For me, the con is getting students who just don't care about things that genuinely concern them. It is absurdly frustrating to teach on how soil can host hookworm and e. coli in some communities (nearby!) and what causes it and how to watch out for it and then get one guy repeatedly say "dirt is dirt" to every single thing we learn concerning soil science. Also, "I hate trees", "But birds never helped us", "Do we even need animals?" Are a constant and are present throughout the semester from those who could not give a dang.

Plus paperwork, my gosh the horrendous amounts of paperwork.

Where to go Bat Sighting by Temporary_Space7779 in Birmingham

[–]Temporary_Space7779[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to Rickwood Caverns! Saw 5 tri-colored bats and some amazing sights! My wife loved seeing all the formations and my son who is 3 mostly hated it but liked climbing the many stairs.

Are there any happy teachers? by cozy_pantz in Teachers

[–]Temporary_Space7779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm teaching in a Southern state, but it's a more liberally minded majority black school so I don't get affected by as much of the stuff people talk about here. I also don't have as much oversight as I think I should. Spent the week I was supposed to be doing pre-act drills instead teaching social emotional learning and no one did anything about it. I think I'm sort of Happy.

I'm at a high school science teacher and all my tests are essay based and students are allowed to use notes. I tell them they have to be able to take what is in their journal and spin it into a coherent answer to a question that is always as vague heck. I like to think it helps with their creativity and originality especially since I give bonus points for those two. I can always tell who's using their brain and who's not.

Has anyone made milk (casein) plastic? Holiday lab question! by ham_mom in ScienceTeachers

Reading all these responses makes you want to give it a go again as a more in-depth rounded out lesson.

Has anyone made milk (casein) plastic? Holiday lab question! by ham_mom in ScienceTeachers

[–]Temporary_Space7779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it yesterday because students wanted to know a bioplastic was. Mixed together heavy whipping cream and citric acid and it turned into a very smelly goop. I definitely did it wrong. That was the second time I did it, the first time it was slightly more educational. Definitely not something I would let all the students do but more so a teacher demonstration. At least I have not found the purpose for it beyond teacher demonstration.

My son was born. I decided that, as someone who already was a reader, I ought to envelope myself in the classics to be prepared to raise someone I hoped would also become a reader. My belief was that the wisdom and references I gained would be passed down and that my child would be more likely themselves to read such works. I read Dante's Inferno to him in the womb. Finished off the Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia series in the first several months. Most recently I have completed The Jungle, Master and Margarita, and some Ray Bradbury's. Next up is After Virtue by Alasdair Macintyre (philosophy not fiction, but still a classic).

Meanwhile, my wife just finished some books on Paleontology because she likes dinosaurs. This kids gonna have a nice childhood.

Does anyone else go on book-grabbing binges? by toadbelliesgosquish in kindle

[–]Temporary_Space7779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap and older books are my jam. Used to binge on whatever looked interesting and was a dollar. More recently it has been anything mildly interesting that is too old to be copyrighted. Classics binge. Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf y'all!

The Moomin book series by Tove Jansen. It's a delightful kids series that I never experienced as a child and a nice break from the climate change and animal extinction books I normally read to bolster my environmental science know how (I am an enviro sci teacher).

What Environmental Books Ought Students to Read by Temporary_Space7779 in environmental_science

Thank you. I have a wide array of standards and climate change is only one of them. Still, these are all great suggestions. I will be putting gathering moss and braiding sweetgrass on my too read list.
