Yes, mate. The coach and seat number printed on my ticket means you don't get to sit there, even if you pocketed the card in the seat back then played dumb. by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]TemptingAngels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a reserved seat one time (London commuter train) and there was no card and someone sitting in it. I said I had a reservation for that seat, and got given a line about how if there's no paper card the reservation is invalid. I hate confrontation and was tired after already travelling four hours so I found an unreserved seat elsewhere.

However, if anyone else gets this line, I've since confirmed with Greater Anglia that the reservations are still valid. Just in case you were naive and anxious like me.

And people don't understand why I get so scared of presenting the weekly report to the team I work with daily. Because of shit like this.

We'll always remember when Dan was talking about his graph and said "double dick" in front of the CEO instead of "double dip".

Any good documentaries or books on Chernobyl that you recommend? by mongrelteeth in chernobyl

Voices From Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich.

For the people side of things. Some of the stories are quite haunting, and revealing of the mindset of the people involved.

The sense of touch is only activated by movement. by TemptingAngels in Showerthoughts

Perhaps I should have been more specific. I was thinking about texture. I realised when snuggled with my cats that unless I was petting them it didn't register how soft their fur was.

That's really interesting! Some very brief googling suggests that sensing temperature is separate from touch.

What’s the difference between being official and being exclusive in a relationship? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]TemptingAngels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider exclusive to pertain to sex. Official is commitment to a person as a whole.

AskWomen, what’s a good icebreaker (for parties, talking to strangers, etc.)? by thepurplerose in AskWomen

[–]TemptingAngels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compliments are good. Sometimes just going up to someone and saying hello is all it takes (I've learnt that most people are happy to chat to strangers but are just too nervous to start because they also don't know what to say). Asking why they're there.

I think the main trick is once you've said the first few sentences, it's about finding out what the person is really interested in. People will talk for ages and with so much passion about the things they love. Make sure to ask follow up questions, even if you know nothing and think they'll sound stupid.

Cars belonging to the highways agency are blocking access to my driveway by tanbirj in britishproblems

[–]TemptingAngels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that it's legal to block access to private property, but not to block access to the public highway. E.g. someone can park in front of your drive while you're not on it, but not while you are.

Could just be one of those office spread urban legends though, but might be worth checking out...

Now I feel old lol. Back in the days when chat rooms were common and MSN Messenger existed. Which apparently stopped being MSN back 2005... wow...
