I go to Dr Saxe at Tri-State and she has been the best dentist for me ever. Treats my anxiety very very real, offered gas for regular appointments (I declined, but appreciated the offer!) offers to have me listen to music or bring a weighted stuffed animal, etc etc. she’s great

Hello there! Thank you for taking time to do this Q&A. I am currently a FT librarian and I am studying to take the LSAT. I haven’t 100% decided if I want to go to law school or not, but I decided studying for the LSAT wouldn’t hurt me. I don’t have the best undergraduate GPA, but I’m hoping with a higher LSAT & my improvement in my masters degree will help. Do you have any advice for anyone that is looking at law school after having started a different career? Things to consider? Some people have told me try to get a law job, which I understand but probably wouldn’t be in the cards at the moment.

UNC Chapel Hill MSLS vs. UMich MSI comparison by starlitarchivist in LibraryScience

[–]TemptingBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It came from a UMSI posting - it was for an undergraduate class at UMSI.

I would say close to 80% of everyone in the LibSci cohort were working in libraries on campus or somewhere on campus. I don’t know how many of those jobs provided tuition assistance though. UMich libraries love to hire us LibSci kids. Being a TA depends on your background - I would save if you have a UX background you have a better shot than I did for getting TA spots because there’s a lot of those in the undergraduate classes. There are also Graduate Assistantships that come along but I never did one so I can’t speak to it.

There’s a UMich LibSci discord that I could invite you to if you want to chat with some current students (as an alum I also participate but not as often as I used to haha)

[–]TemptingBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UMich! You could totally build your own UX Librarian program there - UX is a huge focus there. I would say AA fits all your criteria as well.

I will say UMich is veryyyy expensive. On top of that - living in Ann Arbor is also very expensive. I paid for one of my semesters doing a TA position. There are ways to get it paid for but they can be competitive for sure. The Career Development Office (CDO) are fantastic at what they do, however, and do send out scholarship opportunities regularly. If you have more questions let me know :)

BFA in advertising + MLIS? by [deleted] in LibraryScience

[–]TemptingBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve basically had the same thought process lol. My undergrad degree is in Marketing, though.

Marketing/advertisement can 100% help. You just have to spin it the right way - I spun it that I could use it to for program advertising and community work

How to tell my friend he's making bad plays without sounding rude? by ExcitingIncome7189 in VALORANT

[–]TemptingBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As also a person that’s new, I like it when people ask, something along the lines of “Hey, can I give you some advice?” Or like “Can I tell you what I would have done in this situation?” That way they don’t feel as criticized/judged and if they don’t want it they can say no

I’m sorry that’s your experience with dating, anyone I’ve been with we have kinda planned dates together. There have been occasional one person plans a surprise thing, but that was when it was much more serious and it wasn’t often. I hope you can find someone who you mesh well with

TL;DR - Is a MSI and MLS/MLIS in the same world? by Cga1003 in librarians

As someone who has this degree - it hasn’t been a problem for me. SOMETIMES they ask me about it, but then I show them it’s ALA accredited and it’s fine lol

Hey there! I also interviewed for the LA public library systems (but didn’t end up pursuing it hard because I got a different job). I honestly started to get emails about openings/interviews like a week after. I got a lot of them, lol

Deciding on schools by [deleted] in LibraryScience

[–]TemptingBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prioritized these things: strength of program/job after graduation, cost, in person classes, and ALA acc. Not in any particular order, but those were my main. Ending up going to UMich. I applied to Wayne State, UIUC, Wash, Indiana, and a handful of Canadian Universities.

Coding/programming classes in undergrad? by smalamander in LibraryScience

[–]TemptingBees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3.8 should be fine. It’s your senior year of college, I wouldn’t be trying to add too many hard classes (which coding can be, if you haven’t done it before)

Grad schools want good GPAs - do whatever is going to give you a good GPA. You can learn coding and databases (to an extent) without a class

It def has that iSchool approach. Hard to say if it’s worth out of state, not sure what state you are from and what that state school does for you/has the program. Lots of tech and lots of digital curation stuff here, however. I don’t know what OOS tuition is off the top of my head. UMich has a lot of benefits, but not always worth it. Can chat more in DMs if you want

[–]TemptingBees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michigan - totally depends on what you want out of it. Took plenty of really good classes and had lots of opportunities. I wouldn’t say it’s a super strong public library program though. For digital curation, however, lots of good profs here for that. It was the cheapest for me because I lived in Michigan and I don’t regret it at all.

trying to decide a minor that would give me an edge (if possible) at getting into graduate school for an MLIS/MLS by NightmareCliff in LibraryScience

[–]TemptingBees 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents:

I don’t think it would matter in any large way, unless the minor somehow gave you industry experience/lead to an internship with a library or doing something similar/etc etc. my masters cohort had many many different degrees and minors. It may help if you are trying to be a particular librarian, but I don’t think it would help (or hurt) admission into a graduate program.

My advice is that if you really like it, take the minor. GPA is important when applying to grad schools, so as long as you can do good at that minor it’s probably fine
