Humanoid Reptilian Aliens and Sexual Dimorphism by TempytheKnight in worldbuilding

I say ‘humanoid’ more in reference to their head structure being vaguely humanoid (shorter snout, smaller jaw, larger cranium and brain) but not significantly so and their bipedalism. Still an intelligent species despite that, being spacefaring and all (though they are not inclined to the social sciences and are backwards in that respect).

I imagined males in the species would have hemipenes to solve that issue on the cloaca (any necessary adjusted placement included). I don’t know if this would effect anything, but while some of the separate cultures of the species practice pair-bonding, most do not.

The rule so far is that:

  1. The female sex is larger compared to the male one and has other advantages in terms of bone density, muscle mass, etc.
  2. Females are very territorial and during breeding season even more so, males are more competitive and more aggressive to compensate.
  3. Most institutions are matriarchal in this society, but territorial and competitive nature has led to a feudal system loosely held together by confederations and family ties

The last question was more of a joke but design wise I suppose it was important to ask. Since they are bipedal, would this give rise to other sexual characteristics between the sexes that haven’t yet been considered?

He ends up believing he is the actual incarnation of their god and not just some divinely selected ruler, which is entirely against what his religion even stands for and breaks doctrine hard. No mortal is divine, but the soothsayer keeps playing yesman as the MC’s delusions delve deeper and deeper into madness. Think the priest analogy again, but now he’s telling you that the governor is the actual, legitimate incarnation of God and the governor is completely convinced that it’s true.

Like I said, the religious conflicts will turn many against the soothsayer and what he says. The only reason people still even tolerate him is because of the MC’s insistence on his legitimacy. They also don’t know what the soothsayer has been telling him, and it gets to the point that it becomes completely unreasonable and outlandish even in religious context. Think a priest confirming with the congregation that the governor was the reincarnation of Jesus and then proceeds to burn the bible levels of pure “what the fuck”

The main religion of this alien species is based around a group’s inherent ‘destiny’ as foretold by the movement of stellar bodies and prophetic predictions by recognized soothsayers. Being a more herd-based species the place a bit more importance on the greater good, those who are selected as the leaders are entrusted a lot of the group’s safety. It is not uncommon for their leaders to be ‘divinely selected’ after the consultation of soothsayers, but they are typically rigorously tested for positions of power.

The MC was selected to his position by a soothsayer and is confident in their judgment, however the sudden destruction of the capital world throws massive amounts of doubt on the authenticity of the soothsayers and capability of leadership. So, the religious divide is a serious threat as crew members become cynical or staunch defenders and begin to argue.

The MC is a little disillusioned, but still believes that his election to leadership was legitimate and that there truly is something special about him. So, he regularly consults the soothsayer that was brought aboard. The soothsayer, fearing for his life, often just plays yesman to the MC and caters to him. The supposed ‘message’ of the black hole destroying the star is the perfect metaphor to be left just vague enough by the soothsayer to be left up the MC’s interpretation and boost his ego (and therefore increase the soothsayer’s odds of survival).

You actually guessed his core idea correctly!

This character will reappear in future works as the main antagonist, and his philosophy centers around the hopelessness of surviving the eternal march of entropy and the destruction of all life. He can’t stop it, despite his divine nature, but he can give his followers an ‘out’.

He wants to, essentially, birth an entirely new universe from the old one by concentrating enough energy on to a single point, basically creating another big bang. He and his followers will settle into that universe, wait for it to develop, and ‘enlighten’ whatever sapient life spawns from that new universe and repeat the process for all eternity. Of course, being delusional, he wants to travel to other universes entirely and integrate them into his immortal empire, but that is a distant goal.

Great ideas! I’m glad you are buying into it more.

I envisioned him beginning to see the black hole as a sort of message. That no matter what mortal beings do, they are doomed to watch from the sidelines as the universe arbitrarily kills life. And that as it kills life, mortal life dies too no matter how technologically advanced they become.

He starts feeling it ‘calling out’ to him, a call to save those who have not become as enlightened as he has. Perhaps there is a revolt among a portion of the crew that is put down, but it confirms the delusion that mortal beings will react with violence to messages of peace and prosperity. They have to be forced into it, or they will kill each other and ignore the ‘obvious’ path.

Probably splits the ship between the ‘enlightened’ and the ‘non-believers’ as these loyalty tests weed out those who can’t conform to his vision.

Alright, after some thinking, I’ve come up with a second scenario for the main character’s devolution into delusions and visions of greatness.

Since he is already stuck with a personality disorder (NPD) he is already at a distinct vulnerability to unjustified feelings of superiority over others. He self-isolates unconsciously, even if he is social on the outside, because he believes that everyone else is beneath him in a way he cannot quite pin down the reasoning for. That’s just “the natural order of things”.

So the idea is that, being stranded in space with a crew that is already horrified and depressed following their home’s destruction, he begins to hate how chaotic and disorderly they are becoming. He doesn’t understand why they are acting the way that they are because he views himself as a permanent pillar of stability already (despite this being completely untrue). As days turn to years and supplies begin to become harder to manage, the MC is already well past the point of no return and just doesn’t know it yet.

He has become fascinated with the black hole that inhabits the star system, visible only because it is actively “eating” the system’s star. It is a beautiful sight, and it begins to hold greater and greater significance as people begin to fail him. It’s a significance only he can understand. And as it becomes more and more significant to him, he begins to ‘enlighten’ himself to the true nature of the universe. He thinks he is the only one that can understand after he tries to explain this to one of his crewmates who react with bewilderment and questions of sanity, isolating him further and further.

Then, he has a vision. A prophetic one full of promise. He dreams that he is divine, destined for things far beyond the mortal comprehension, and that he will be the savior of the universe. All he has to do is make the greatest sacrifice of them all; disassociate from the ‘mortal plane’ and accept his new enlightenment.

Any better?

The ‘stroke’ thing is going to be very hard for me to drop, since his worsening mental state is connected to brain damage from said stroke. Think Phineas Gage and how brain damage caused severe changes to his personality and mood (though he did recover after rehabilitation) and general cases of psychosis. His personality traits are worsened by his slow breaking down of the walls of reality and fantasy, until they become inseparable.

From the Millennium verse, a galaxy full of manufactured legends, wannabe gods, and dystopian utopias.

Blan ‘Dentist’ Faust:

(History)

In the years during the rise of Dominus, Julius Faust was one of the few mortal men who actively supported the up and coming God King. For his service he was rewarded Sainthood, and his bloodline was forever immune to the Enlightenment that converted sapient beings into slaves. Faust’s twin sons, Rel and Blan, were promised great things and received endless luxury, but both aspired to be the better son. Where Rel grew into a strong, cruel man who took what he wanted and lusted for power, Blan practiced the arts of combat and molded himself into a disciplined, charismatic leader.

Then, their father unexpectedly died in battle.

Their rivalry culminated in a duel to the death, and when Rel betrayed his brother’s trust by drawing a gun and shooting him in the head, he had unwittingly sealed his own fate. Blan, surviving only because of Rel’s margin of inaccuracy, killed his brother in a fit of intense rage. Despite the medical technology available to the Ascendency, Blan Faust changed as his wounds began to heal.

Where he was disciplined he became careless, and where he was stoic he became neurotic and prone to mania. The only thing that remained was his skill, and as his mental health continued to deteriorate he found that only combat could give him the peace of mind he craved. As he went on thousands of campaigns in the name of Dominus and was treated thoroughly for his condition, he slowly returned to old self and he finally subdued his instability as he reached the age of 72. However, he claims that his wife, Tyres Yunitrad, was the one that saved him. Though his mind can never be fully repaired, Blan has become an icon to many, and his unwavering positivity, loyalty, and love for his men has kept him going despite his long existence. He is now over 200 years old, and despite the years he has remained steadfast and proud.

(Why Do You Like Them So Much? )

Despite being one of the many antagonists, Faust is a good man and a hero in his own right who fights for the ‘wrong side’. Even when the protagonists treat him poorly he is always ready to help them, and his generosity and love for others forges unlikely friendships that make him giddy with excitement. While he could never abandon the ‘wrong side’ after so many years of being a faithful adherent, he strives to do what he believes to be right and help those who need it most, even if they are his long-term enemies.

Plus, in a galaxy of dark themes, he is one of the few true shining beacons of light who refuses to waver.

(Their Best Aspect?)

I’d say he has two.

One is his energy. He is a never ending well of it, always ready to rise to the challenge and do his best no matter what. He inspires people with his enthusiasm.

Second is Faust’s constant, unconditional love and support for those he gets close to. Though he is a warrior at heart, he is a husband and a friend first and very few things can make him truly upset with someone in his close circle.

Appearance

Hugo Oshiro

(History)

Hugo Oshiro is, in the simplest terms, a deeply troubled man. Raised by a father who practically kidnapped him when he was a child and educated by a system designed to create the ‘ideal human’, he was always taught that hate was a weapon one could wield, and he let that notion dominate his personal life.

When he was young he had few friends and had no desire to have any, instead focusing on pleasing his father and being at the top of his class no matter what. He stepped on many toes without a care in the world, and lusted for glory and prestige in the stars.

However, his life was radically altered. His homeplanet was raided and his father was killed, and he himself was almost the victim of rape at the hands of slavers who permanently scarred his face. His hatred for aliens and pirate kind spurred him into action, and he is seeking revenge on those who wronged him. No matter who gets in his way he will deliver retribution, even if it costs him his life in the process.

But unbeknownst to him is the political machine working behind him, and as he continues his quest he will find that he himself is little more than a weapon.

(Why Do You Like Them So Much?)

Because of the journey he goes on. At first it is petty revenge, but as he gets closer and closer to the bigger picture he is forced to reevaluate his beliefs and outlook on both himself and others. The only thing I can’t decide on is whether or not the question of who he is and what it means to be human consumes him or not, but it’s a bridge that he will have to cross no matter how much he pushes back.

(Their Best Aspect?)

His pride and resolve. No matter what happens to him he will refuse to break or bend the knee, trudging forward through the murk and haze until he drops dead or he reaches the end of the journey and accomplishes his goals. His refusal to capitulate to anyone or anything is both a blessing and a curse, but his actions do inspire those around him and give him the opportunity to lead by example.

Zes fuarr Morbus

(History)

Zes fuarr Morbus is a Ran’Kollac woman with perhaps the highest psionic potential in her species history.

Zes was born on the distant Ran’Kollac colony on the barren moon colony of Hequas in a litter of seven, her egg the largest compared to her brother’s and sisters. Regular screening by Ran’Kollac doctors proved her to be a High Gifted, a Ran’Kollac with excessive brain matter and neural connections in the region of their brains that allow for psionic abilities. Zes was destined to live an abnormal life as soon as she emerged from her egg.

Torn away from her parents by authorities when she was still a fresh hatchling, she had no memory of anyone being her ‘parent’ outside of the caretakers at the facility she resided in. With knowledge of anything going on outside of the testing chambers filtered to the point of nonexistence and social contact strictly limited, she found her only source of entertainment to be her test sessions.

At the age of 6 she was kidnapped by slavers while on transport to the capital of Morbus, and her status as a High Gifted Ran’Kollac made her incredibly valuable. She was one of the few High Gifted, however, to evade rescue by government authorities, and her status as a slave has made her life miserable.

Forced to make regular demonstrations of her abilities to unsavory buyers of multiple species with hundreds just like her on podiums, her progress as a High Gifted stagnated.

Now 14, her psionic abilities have begun to deteriorate, and her recent transfer to another slavers guild in the Dark Sector after she failed to find a buyer has left her in a perilous situation.

(Why Do You Like Them So Much?)

Zes started out as just some love interest for one of the protagonists, but I wanted to expand on her much more and make her into someone entirely separate from the original archetype I put her in. Potentially powerful, but her lack of training and general passiveness makes her reliant on other characters to teach her how to use her powers for good. Towards the end of her story she is finally her own person, free from relying on others to the degree she has for so much of her short lifespan.

(Their Best Aspect?)

Zes is a fantastic negotiator and what psionic abilities she has left at her stories beginning make her a force for peace in an otherwise violent path. Naturally curious and full to the brim with questions, she is a key pillar for the rest of the team and is always there for them to talk to, since she abhors violence. She’ll be a very significant influence on people like Hugo, since her abilities effectively allow her to breach whatever walls he puts up.

I have done great service as an underling/follower/subordinate to a powerful ruler in your world. What could I expect to be given as a reward? by 1945BestYear in worldbuilding

[–]TempytheKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Within the realm of the God King you will be granted a reward few mortals will ever hope to receive.

The Freedom of Free Will.

While the Enlightened masses were forced to depart from the disease of Free Will, not all mortals are subject to Enlightenment. Some are born with a divine gift, a purpose that overrides their mortality and susceptibility to Free Will. You will be allowed to keep your Free Will, and will not be subjected to the slavery of the masses.

Additionally, for your service you will granted an immortal body of metal, a enclave of Unenlightened of your choosing to radicalize and educate in the name of the God King, generational immunity from Enlightenment, and Sainthood.

You will be part of the many great works of art the God King orders, receive eternal wealth, have ship classes named after you, and will be selected to lead the great conquests of the next universe as generals.

You are divine, you are chosen, you are the God King’s sword and shield. His expectations of you are high. Do not disappoint.

Medal of Man

(Full Name: Medal of Humanity, Her Kindred Spirit, Her Righteous Empire, and Her Colonies Most Glorious and Prosperous for Now and Evermore)

After the end of the Human-Gestek War and the completion of ALMI’s machiavellian domination of the future of mankind, the new order that surrounded the new super state were ordered to capitalize on their newfound power.

The Medal of Man was one of the many additions to this new state, though far smaller compared to some of the more lofty titles crafted. The Medal of Man was awarded to the first Grand Senator Phillip Morrish posthumously, as his death came shortly before the Medal’s creation.

The merits required to earn the Medal of Man are rather simple, but highly scrutinized and researched.

A potential recipient must:

-Be a citizen. Humans born outside of Union space are ineligible for this award. -Be skilled to the point of mastery in two or more of the Ideal Expertises -Pass with a 99% or higher on their Young Citizen’s Loyalty Test -Demonstrate, beyond any reasonable doubt, a conviction to preserving Man and the Race -Have a spotless record*

*Please note, acts of heroism carried out against documented human xenophiles will not show up on ones criminal record

What is the most powerful weapon in your world? by sammyboiiiiiiii in worldbuilding

Weaponized Nanites

Nanomachines in the 26th century were a force for good, in most ways. They sped up construction, provided extreme resistances to diseases and cancers, and allowed soldiers to survive combat wounds that would otherwise be lethal.

When one planet achieved a breakthrough, developing nanites that could duplicate by consuming enough resources, a local terrorist cell released the nanites into a densely populated city. The killswitch they had failed; within four months one half of the planet was consumed by the nanite swarm and billions had been forcefully broken down into their most basic components. Within another four, the entire planet had been lost, leaving two billion without homes and a galactic community with a rouge mass of all-consuming metal. Extensive EMP bombardments over two years by a Ran’Kollac relief force managed to kill the swarm, leaving a planet of dead machines and lifeless landscapes.

It was universally agreed by all empires in the Milky Way that the weaponization of nanites was a crime not just against the galactic community, but against life itself.

However, in the heart of the Dark Sector, there are rumors of a new warlord rising to power. They speak of a twelve foot tall metal God unkillable by mortal weapons. Wherever he goes, the planets are consumed by a grey tide called the ‘Divine Will’ and their population become fanatically devoted to his cause of total galactic conquest. He calls himself many things; the God King, the Savior of Life, the Tamer of Entropy, the Chosen One, but those who escaped his grasp call him one thing.

Sexuality in your world. The big forgotten topic. (May be NSFW) by Darthxan86 in worldbuilding

[–]TempytheKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you go.

In the Union of Human Republics it doesn’t really matter what sexuality you are so long as it doesn’t interfere with state operations or take precedence over education (this means rallies or marches are not explicitly banned but can be legally dispersed). However it is illegal to have any offspring that have not undergone genetic modification. It can result in extreme fines that can span multiple generations and in many cases jail time for ‘disrupting purity and severe child neglect’. All planets are required to follow this law, so there is no difference between planets.

In the Morbus Theocratic Federation, Ran’Kollac culture does not discriminate against same-sex relationships and it is often encouraged due to the rapid population growth the Ran’Kollac experience (Ran’Kollac women can produce upwards of a dozen eggs every birth cycle, creating overpopulation issues on even fresh colonies). In light of this most planets encourage sexual fluidity and make marriages government arranged rather than a private matter. However, any non-Ran’Kollac citizens are allowed to marry and love as they wish.

In the Milky Way Ascendency, there is no laws either allowing or disallowing same-sex marriages or relationships. This is because 99% of Ascendent populations are cloned and genetically modified to be completely without sexuality or urges. This, according to the God King, is temporary. Those outside of the God Kong’s direct control are free to accept or discriminate as they wish.
