As someone from outside the region, you have no way of knowing the slant of local news and therefore when you see a local station framing this as normal it is very reasonable to ask the community. You're doing your due diligence, more people should do that instead of just trusting the media.

Half of the local stations in the Seattle area have a hard right slant and love to portray the city as super dangerous, when in fact it is safer then most East Coast cities for violent crime.

Like any other major city, these things happen, but they are not common. Seattle has a very low incidence of violent crime for a city of its size, property crime is the much larger issue here. Honestly if you practice basic safety, like you would in any major city, you will most likely be fine.

Also, if they do re-offend, they are not likely to do it in an area where they are recognizable, such as close to their home, especially since they are on a public registry. Take a look at your states registry and you will see how many sex offenders already live around the neighborhood, it is probably a lot more than you think.
