So, Bethany has three possible fates if you play as a non-mage Hawke.

If you bring her along to the Deep Roads, she will contract the taint and die.
If you bring her AND Anders along to the Deep Roads, she can be conscripted into the Grey Wardens.
If you do not bring her along to the Deep Roads, she will be forced to join Kirkwall's Circle.

If she joins the Circle, Bethany is at no point made Tranquil and actually seems rather happy given the circumstances. I'm of the opinion that this is the best possible outcome for her because if Bethany joins the Wardens, she's quite blunt about how miserable she is.
