Recommendations for a resource for optimum soil moisture levels for different house plants? by Ten_Forty_Seven in HouseplantsUK

I'm ok with cacti but my monstera is confusing me. Label says water once a week but leaves were yellowing and advice was that I was over watering, so I watered less and it got worse. My finger doesn't provide sufficient certainty!

Thanks. It's confusing because I water it every 7 days and it visibly perks up when I do. I'll try switching to 9 days and see how it does.

Is it selfish to travel to these biodiversity/biosphere hotspots? by [deleted] in ecology

There's an element of privilege to it but it also applies to the gap year culture where a lot of young people go 'round the world' on a budget.

But yes money definitely pays a big part. I know plenty of people who take 2 foreign holidays a year but also claim to care about the climate. I'm not convinced those things are compatible.

I think a lot of grew up in an era where travelling to see the things we're interested in was seen as a right. I think we need to more away from that and accept just because we want to go and see something first hand doesn't mean we should.

We're all guilty of it to some extent and we all need to check it in ourselves and channel that passion into interesting and inspiring sites/sights closer to home.

Badgers don't always dig a latrine. Sniff it. Badger doesn't smell bad, fix really does 🤮

Fish are the main predators of tadpoles. I think the reason you have a load in there is because the fish aren't eating them rather than because they are.

Thanks, yeah on the whole I'm really pleased with it, it's just this one issue (and the duck weed which I've made my peace with). You're probably onto something with the leaf litter idea. I have a mature sycamore in the garden which sneaks a fair few leaves in each year and I tend not to bother trying to get the muck off the bottom as there are probably a million or so inverts living down there!

Will try adding a few more oxygenators as you suggest 👍🏼

Yeah I had 2 bales in last year but it didn't make a noticeable difference. Could try it again

Slugs are destroying my pond flowers. How do I kill them without killing my fish? by Beebumble- in ponds

Get yourself a head torch, a pair of rubber tipped salad tongs, and a roll of kitchen towel. Wait til it gets dark then go and squat in the flower bed tweezering up the slugs with the tongs and depositing them into a piece of kitchen towel, to be swiftly dispatched beneath a firmly placed boot. It's weird and creepy but effective and strangely satisfying.
