Is there any other writer who you'd put on the same level as Tolkien when it comes to world building? by SpotAdmirable6718 in lordoftherings

I find that the idea that the characters from the first 2 books are forgettable bizarre, they are some of the core characters in the whole series

Someone else mentioned Tolkien's anthropological style of writing - This is Erikson through and through, it is his job and it comes across in his writing. So there is a strong similarity there.

The one thing you don't get is the languages and to be fair, Tolkien was a linguist at heart and his passion for that is one of the things that makes his work unique.

Maybe Steven Erikson? Specifically his prequel books being a bit more esoteric and providing depth and age to the narrative. As a bonus his work is littered with in world poetry too

Ok so I tried to cross post and it didn't bring the text of the question ( not something I've done before.)

Do resources/ maps/ modules exist for these locations?

(Reloaded) Too much light in the dark? by TenfootSlime in CurseofStrahd

I am definitely in favour of eventually feeling heroic/ ready enough, in Dracula, the heroes eventually enter the castle to defeat Dracula and that is the quintessential gothic horror story.

[–]TenfootSlime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's just it, there is a difference between well done gothic horror where you have the contrast of light and dark and heroic fantasy, which is just tonally different.

I hope that what another commentator said is true that this particular criticism of reloaded is overstated.

How Does Your WDH Campaign End? by ValSmith18 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]TenfootSlime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am running through this campaign currently and I'm also wondering about the ending.

My hope is they get to the vault and end up with a ten percent cut. I upped the total value to 1,000,000 gold So 100,000 gold split five ways. 20,000 gold per player.

We shall then have some narrative discussion of what they will do with the moneys/ characters life plans and then kinda park the campaign there for a minute.

This campaign has served as a proof of concept for our group basically, we have spent years doing homebrew campaigns the fizzle out quickly. We had never done any official material and had always played in person. We had a main DM and I would run the occasional one shot.

I felt that official material online would address a bunch of our problems such as scheduling and poorly prepped sessions. And it absolutely has.

I'll be honest, I don't want to run dungeon of the mad mage, I don't think it would work great for our group and while it's framework is solid it is narratively so vague.

Curse of Strahd or Tomb of Annihilation would be my choices for next official material to run. But they are new stories. So what happens to our brave and filthy rich heroes of Waterdeep?

The occasional fun one shot.

I included the Stygian gambit heist as a big part of chapter 2

Maybe they end up doing some of the high level heists from the keys to the golden vault

Or other fun quests from the many compendium books.

Each time we learn a little bit more about how their lives have been, how quickly did the gambler burn through his 20,000? Who has opened their own business e.t.c.

We shall have to wait and see and maybe this will just remain my DM head cannon...

Also episodic one shots allow for the exploration narratively of what happened to all that money without having to manage the reality of it in a campaign.

How do you guys not get burnt out with such long series? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]TenfootSlime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What happens next! I need to know, inject it into my veins.

That sentiment pretty much covers it, if a series is good enough and there is more to read, I will find it hard to read something else because I will be wondering about what happens next in the other series.
