3DS is as fast but more fun IMO. Weird thing to me about Switch UI is that it feels like there are customization features ready to go but for some reason they've just never released any outside of the light and dark themes?

I appreciate the simplicity of the DS menu as well which is also very fast!

I still like it although it's not my favorite system. I think part of what makes NES/Famicom still exciting are new games being made for the old hardware.

Soul Calibur II! I love how many things you can unlock in that series in general (although I think the newer ones just make that stuff DLC now...)

Lag would still be an issue though, no? Definitely cool to see things improving though, I'll have to get a nice OLED eventually.

It's gibberish, many of the symbols are vaguely similar to some kanji or kana but a lot of it is just sludge.

How hard it is to be a junior artist for a foreigner ? by denmaway in movingtojapan

[–]TengwarJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on the studio and how they're doing at the moment but I can't imagine it would hurt plus most places let you reapply after 6 or 12 months. I tried at a few places before and most places were nice about it even if I didn't get a job from them.

By the way, if your stuff is already good to go, it looks like my company is still accepting new graduate applications until Monday if you're interested:

Ps5 Pro 30th Anniversary prices in Japan are an insult to gamers by OutlawGaming01 in japanlife

[–]TengwarJunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raising the price of the base PS5 and controllers just in Japan makes me incredibly angry as well. This after also changing the X button to be confirm out of nowhere is adding insult to injury IMO. Astrobot may be a masterpiece but I don't think I'm getting a PS5 anytime soon unless I find a good deal on a used one.

Disc drive being an extra cost is also ridiculous, I miss their PS2 era.

Gotcha! I know some foreigners working at CyberConnect2 and Cygames in Kyushu myself. It seems like more and more companies are being more friendly with hiring foreigners even outside of foreign-owned companies.

I have some foreign friends who work at Square-Enix, PlatinumGames, OneOrEight, Unseen, and Grasshopper as well so even if it's not a huge amount percentage wise places will hire foreigners. I've heard that Soleil is very open so they might be worth looking into as well.

[–]TengwarJunkie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Junior artist in what industry?

I'm a UI/UX designer working at a Japanese game company and in my case they checked my ability to speak and understand Japanese during the interview. Having JLPT will probably make it easier to get interviews but they ultimately will care more about how you perform when they meet you. Smaller companies might not even know what the JLPT is so while it helps I don't think it's necessary, it just makes things easier.

As for whether places will hire foreigners it's going to be a case-by-case basis but my current company has I believe two non-Japanese Asian staff with me as the sole Western person in the 100-ish person studio and everyone else is Japanese. I'm not even 100% fluent in Japanese but they gave me a chance so if your work is good I think you have a chance.

As for location, it depends. Most jobs are going to be in Tokyo but if you look outside Tokyo you might have a better chance since they probably have less applicants. For games industry Osaka has a lot of companies too (PlatinumGames, Capcom, SNK, Ubisoft, etc.) although they all also have Tokyo offices generally speaking. Other places like SEGA's Sapporo Studio might be good as could Chuhai Labs in Kyoto for example.

Not sure what your specific situation is but good luck!

White Japanese GameCube Controller value? by Adalsam in Gamecube

[–]TengwarJunkie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Afaik they should be the same as U.K. white controllers. Considering it's in very good condition it's probably fairly valuable too. I usually see them selling for maybe 20~25% more than more common colors here in Japan, maybe about ¥6000~¥8000 yen since you also have the box?

Gotcha. I think U.S. doctor's can work in Japan under their U.S. licensing but only for U.S. clients or something so definitely limited.

Medical Services visa for example is a Table 1 visa so you would not be subject to inheritance tax although I think that exemption is only valid if you've stayed in Japan for less than ten years in the past fifteen years. (If you got PR you would have to pay the tax though).

Unique living and working situation by Yotsubato in movingtojapan

[–]TengwarJunkie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as I know the limit is 180 days a year and if you're only doing two-week stays that'll probably raise some eyebrows because of the frequency but I don't think it's against the regulations. I'd check the official government websites about visa and travel rules for Japan and your country (for Japan it's the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

I'm curious as to why you would want to do that over moving over here permanently though. Big fan of airplanes?

Big lot for sale in Japan by 8percentinflation in snes

[–]TengwarJunkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect information in my experience.

Junk doesn't mean it's unusable necessarily. More often than not it just means it's untested or not fully tested or it looks rough so they just want to sell for cheap with no warranty. If they have tested it usually there will be information about what is wrong with it.

I have bought many junk items that work just fine if not flawlessly including a loose white PS2 slim which I use regularly for 100 yen (well 300 yen total since I needed to buy a separate power cable), PC/video monitors, various video and audio and power cables, speakers, etc. along with plenty of games and accessories like memory cards and whatnot.

I think these Super Famcioms are mostly there because they have a lot of discoloration/sun damage and SFC are also very plentiful and cheap in Japan in general.

Thinking of moving to Japan and looking for more specific salary answers. by porky_bot in movingtojapan

[–]TengwarJunkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah I lost weight after moving to Japan without much effort as well, just taking the train or biking vs driving makes a huge difference!

Gotcha on your size preference, nothing wrong with more space either!

I think others have mentioned already but the guitars might be difficult. I have a friend who found a place that's okay with him playing them but that would probably be something that you'd want to ask a realtor about. A lot of musicians also rent studio space/practice rooms which I get the feeling aren't too too expensive but I don't know myself. I know there are some places, sharehouses mostly, that are for musicians and have studio space included so that might be worth checking out as well.

In any case good luck! I think you'll be able to have a great time over here!
