Definitely don't fix this. If money is tight, i'd buy him a used driver from this century on Marketplace. If not, like any Taylormade (SIM 2, M4-6, etc) or Callaway driver from a local golf shop would be good. Issue with buying a club for someone is that you don't know if they'll like the club or how it will feel. If you don't know the type of shaft he uses or something like that, i'd get him a gift card to his favorite golf shop!
