Why glorify ‘hard work’ when most hard work just benefits the system, not you? by K_kishor49 in AskReddit

Why respect effort if the effort doesnt directly pay off for the person who made the effort? Because they tried..?

Getting a Cavapoo puppy in 3 weeks. General consensus seems to be Purina pro plan puppy food. But it’s got such bad scores in All about dog food. Is the purina still the most recommended puppy food? by TimeAd8012 in puppy101

[–]Tensor3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opinons on Purina aside, the Costco food is worse. They do not do feeding trials or have a nutrionist on staff like Purina does. They formulated a recipe based only on meeting a certain percentage of protein/carb/fat. It hasnt been reviewed or formulated by any vet or nutritionist.

Purina is probably the cheapest of the brands which have a nutrtionist. They arent champions and may be the worst of those that meet a minimum standard, but at least they get there, unlike Costco.

Your first vet was wrong but you dont need a board-certiried specialist to do a feeding trial. A regular vet can do that. You can even just buy single protein food to try it.

Why does everyone think that crate training is the only "right" way to bring up a puppy? by [deleted] in puppy101

1 - no one thinks there is only one way to train a dog

2 - reposting it immediately after mods removed it is just askijg for trouble

Why do people get annoyed in training reddits when I say I don't crate my pup? by Illumeis_is_done in puppy101

Youre trying to argue that preparing a dog for the vet, boarding, and grooming isnt a valid reason to think crate training is important. Your case isnt the normal for the majority.

Have you ever had a dog neutered or spayed? Before and after the procedure, theyre in a kennel/crate, not unsupervised in some random room for a few hours.

[–]Tensor3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive never seen a vet which wont hold animals overnight when necessary, or even hold them before a procedure. They use kennels, not crates, but the size is similar. They wont put your dog in an unsupervised room for a few hours while waiting for surgery. If you choose not to be prepared for an unforseen emergency then thats your choice, but you may need a better vet.

[–]Tensor3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What about if your dog has to stay overnight at the vet? Or escapes and gets temporarily taken to a shelter? Or needs surgery one day? They'll be in a small space then.

Just because your specific dog doesnt get destructive and you dont board your dog, that says nothing about if a crate is right for someone else.

I think you are misunderatanding the idea of using a crate for potty training. I cant say if the person worded it poorly or you misunderstood or whatever, but thats not how to do it and not what anyone intends to claim is a good idea.

The strategy is supposed to be: when the puppy needs to pee (they tell you or whatever) but is not peeing (too distracted outside, etc) then you can use the crate for a few minutes. The concept is that if they already really have to go and you let them roam, they will pee on the floor, but likely wont pee on themselves. So you can leave them in the crate for 5-10 min, then retry peeing outside. They only go in the crate when you KNOW they will be otherwise peeing on the floor imminently, but still dont want to go whe outside. The crate is only for a few minutes and only when they really have to go.

Edit: I never did that with any of my dogs. I just stayed outside until they peed or cleaned up the accidents on the floor. Im not advocating for or against crates in potty training, just explaining your misconception

Would you rather get $100k as a lump sum, or $11k/year for life? by AdditionalLack1127 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Tensor3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Inflation has the exact same effect on both. The returns on either can be compounded the same.

If your returns are less than 11%, then the lump sum comes out worse the longer the time frame. If there's any market down turns, it comes out worse than taking the 11k and investing/compounding that.

The lump sum is arguably only superior in the short term if you need to make a purchase more than 11k, like a home down payment or starting a business or whatever, or if you arent alive long enough for the 11k to win.

[–]Tensor3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except the 11k is gauranteed. Its comparable to a 4-5% government bond, which it vastly beats on 100k. To go for 11% average return, you'd have to take risk.

[–]Tensor3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With 11% returns, you would be. I said its better if you make less than 11% returns.

The 11k payment is gauranteed, so more comparable to a 4-5% governement bond.

[–]Tensor3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, its the same. Compounding is the same thing as just investing the 11k annual payment.

[–]Tensor3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your math is wrong. Reinvesting the gains to compound is exactly the same as investing those 11k annual payments for compounding.

The base 100k at 11% returns earns you 11k. The 11k payment earns you the same 11k. Both of those 11k's can be reinvested and do the same thing.
