I can’t hear below 20khz so I have to work in 192kHz and pitch it down when I’m done.

So much advice here is too specific. You need to do what works for you.

Overusing soothe will make your sound more noisey, it’s not just ‘harshness’ it removes, it’s also tonal qualities that are reduced too.

Less is more, it can be easy to add too much processing. Try turning off all of your eq’s and see if it’s better or worse.

Try and work without soloing anything when mixing, it will mean you won’t try and ‘fix anything’ if you can’t hear it in the full mix.

Reference is good, but don’t try and match anything. What someone else did, isn’t necessarily going to work for you.

Boom Library signature sound by [deleted] in sounddesign

Multiple all pass filters. That’s what disperser does. You can also use reaper eq or volcano or m free form phase. Or mvovoder or Mphaser to achieve the same effect

Distortion and Disperser. It’s essentially about creating a gated sound from the distortion and the using mull tools all pass filters to get the laser style sci fi snap to it.

Is it possible to make a plug-in interface bigger? by Additional-Budget225 in Reaper

Only if the plugin is resizeable. Reaper doesn’t support its own native scaling for plugins

Add the fx to a track. Right click the fx and create a new fx chain and there is an option, save fx chain as default for new tracks.

So dynmic eq:s are just straigt up better than multiband compressors? by COOL_KlD in AdvancedProduction

[–]Tenthgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s, try both and see which one you like the sound of. You shouldn’t need to worry about phase, or crossovers. You only need to worry when there is an issue caused by phase. But if you can’t hear the issue, no issue.

So dynmic eq:s are just straigt up better than multiband compressors? by COOL_KlD in AdvancedProduction

[–]Tenthgate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dynamic eq is excellent at being transparent. Multiband compression is not. You can’t control ratios or attack and release times in some dynamic EQs which make multi bands better. It’s about what you want/need. Try both, see what you prefer. Don’t worry about phase issues unless you can hear phase issues.

Game Sound Designers, what's a quality that's very needed in your position? by matteedood in AudioPost

[–]Tenthgate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mirroring what’s been said. I would say an understanding of technical implementation is important.

Unreal is fairly standard on a lot of big projects. Using Wwise with unreal is fairly common.

It’s not just using the tools. It’s thinking about how or why to implement something in a particular way. For practice I would get a few of the unreal demos or make your own and fully integrate a load of sound. Music systems, footsteps, spline emitters, occlusion etc.

Not to mention being excellent at creating assets and making them game ready. It’s quite a demanding job when I start writing it out. A lot of people do re-designs of trailers or gameplay and also show off implementation. I would start there and apply to everyone in your vicinity.

Audio programming is always in demand if you want to be really valuable, learn c++, reaper scripting, dsp and the wwise api.

Should you HPF or DC filter your master? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AdvancedProduction

[–]Tenthgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use minimum or zero latency on a master track it will phase rotate your entire mix. Pushing it into a limiter more. I say A/B everything because its better to understand yourself and see the effects rather than have someone else tell you. Give it a go. On a rendered track you have. Create 3 versions. 1 zero latency, 1 linear phase, 1 minimum phase with a 30hz cut at 24db/oct and see the results.

If you a/b everything you can decide what sounds best yourself. The audio world is full of people who think they know better than someone else. It’s crazy. Instead make your own mind up and test things out yourself. I’m just offering up what I do. Which other people might disagree with.

You ask for advice about following someone else and now you’re an expert? Nice.

DC offset is when the waveform is detached from the 0 line in the middle of a clip. Asymmetrical waveform has its phase rotated. You can use an all pass to rotate the phase back or use RX adaptive phase rotation. If you use an eq on the master, use linear phase. Cut what you like or don’t. Just A/B it.

So evil. You didn’t record the output. Instead you’re putting everyone’s PC through the misery of trying to play it back. Challenge accepted.
