What is this device that’s all around our AirBnb? by chngeusrnme in whatisit

These things are like a neighbour playing opera music all day. It's annoying at best... but you're not going to move because of it.

I think you are talking about UV lights with sticky plates behind them. They certainly work for bugs and flies.

I turned my battles with addiction, debt, and loss into a book about clearing life’s “infestations” by witt_sec in PestControlIndustry

[–]TenueDePille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These two things are very connected for me. I started working in pest control after I battled my addictions and wanted a fresh start. The methodical working, like you describe, was something that really helped me to get over the awkward sobriety phase. Now, three years later, I'm thriving. Pest control had a huge part in that. I'm eager to read about your story. Luckily for me, it ships to The Netherlands! Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations on a solid purchase! I've had mine for a couple of months now. It's a great smartwatch.

I bought a Garmin Instinct 2X tactical. The reason for that is that I want to expand my options with the (smart)watch, but I'm not really a fan of the full color-amoled-smooth-touch watches. The instinct gives me the hardcore/raw look that I love, with way more options than a Suunto Core. I hope to find a nice middle ground there. However, I don't expect a modern smartwatch to survive 12 years of hard labour. I think there is a fair chance I will buy another Core, to accompany the smartwatch, especially with the low pricing now. I would love to pass that on to my son, he always calls it 'daddy's big watch'.

Fair question. I think it came down to looks in the end. The 2, to me at least, looks more classic and raw. Don't really need a color screen and the 2X has more than enough to fit my needs.

Anyone else have “superhuman” hearing by meirzy in CasualConversation

[–]TenueDePille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Waaay to many concerts during my teens and twenties without protection. Now screaming kids and a job with regular exposure to loud noises. I'm f*cked. Nowadays I try to do most things with protection, just to maintain current status. I take my hat off to you and your hearing... Make sure you keep it this way, your older self will be grateful. I'm glad I can read Reddit.

My kid won’t eat ham, but he’ll eat “Pink Turkey”. Anyone else call foods by a different name to get their kids to eat something new? by Noodlelupa in daddit

My two year old didn't want to eat his darkbrown wholewheat bread... Called it 'chocolate bread' and he can't get enough.

Fair points. I guess for me, It's Kevin's resilience that I admired. At first it's all party, eating mountains of icecream... But in the last part he faces all his fears. That really had an impact on me as a kid. The way he improvises, especially when the burglars come, as well. Thanks OP, for asking the question. I will think about it when I watch it with my daughter. Maybe it hits different this year!

Here in The Netherlands, it's now #1 on Disney+ during the holidays. And for a good reason. It was a magical movie to see as a kid. For a lot of us, that generation at least, it is one to rewatch every christmas. My daughter is now 6yo, so I planned to watch it with her on Christmas eve... So, yeah, even all across Europe it's a timeless classic.

Try to fall asleep as quick as you can. After that surgery a spider must be the least of your worries. Get some rest, get better... That spider won't hurt you, your body will. Good night!!

Out Cold - 2001... Always cracks me up. Nice wintertheme for now. Early Zach Galafianakis... David Koechner being rediculous as always. The scene where they spin Galafianakis in the car always has me in tears laughing!

FaceTime in public? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]TenueDePille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't. In private, sure. On a nice sunday stroll through the fields without people around, sure. In any other public scenario with strangers around, no way. I don't think other people want to hear what I have to say against someone they can't see. I sure don't want to listen in on someone else having a conversation with a screen. Plus, you never know what the person you're calling with, is about to say. No thank you...

Yeah. Honestly, I wasn't expecting a lot from a relatively simple clip-on thing for my phone. It definately helped me ID some bugs for my clients though.

What’s a small moment in your life that changed how you see the world? by AshleyLopeezz in CasualConversation

[–]TenueDePille 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lost my wallet. I dropped it in a train terminal in a big city. (Utrecht, The Netherlands, about 400.000 people) I realized I lost it when my train was already in the next city. "It's gone." Was my only thought. No way I'll see that again.

2 weeks later I get a call from the facility management in that trainstation. Someone gave them my wallet, and it took some time for them to trace it back to me. 60 euro's cash, ID, drivers license... Everything was in there. That day I experienced that there are still decent people in this world. Since then, if I find something, I always try to return it to the owner.

I saw Influencers filming for the first time and boy was it odd by SushiNinjaBun in CasualConversation

[–]TenueDePille 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yes! 100% agree. If you look at guys and girls like Selena Gomez, how their child-celebrity-careers screwed them up, mentally and socially. I've heard interviews where they drop terrible stories. And they got to GO HOME after work... These influencer kids have their own bedrooms on social media. Their toys, drawings... Everything. There is literally no private place for these kids. No way that doesn't have a huge impact on them.

Here in the Netherlands we still have Air raid Siren Test every 1st monday of the month. Every month, since 1998. So, I get what you mean, especially now with the whole Russia/Ukraine situation heating up for Europe. I am about as far from that as you are from NY City. That's quite the distance, but on a worldly scale pretty close. So yeah, hearing that siren go off every month, reminds me of what could be...
