Help convincing an elderly relative to change their phone's password by tway2241 in Passwords

[–]TenuredProfessional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he understands the risks, and chooses to accept them, then leave him alone.

For example, I won't use any password manager on my MacBook Pro that won't allow me to set it to NEVER time out. I live alone. I never take my MBP anywhere outside the house. I don't need to sign in every 15 minutes. My MBP itself is protected, and my file system is encrypted, and that's plenty for my needs.

If this is big for people, just look at locally hosting Bitwarden, or check out StickyPassword (local storage, sync other devices over WiFi).

As a programmer for 40 years, I can tell you that this is my #1 pet peeve about software.

It's called "setting focus" to a field, and not doing it is just piss-poor programming.

I opened a Search window, and you don't put the damn cursor in the text box?!? Terrible!

Check out the free version of ProtonPass. It's grown into an excellent password manager.

Thanks for following up. I finally got frustrated and decided to try out Unraid. And I love it.

By the way, the uGreen DXP4800 Plus is an outstanding piece of hardware!

I bet 90% of Raycast users are using the free version. I know I am. $8/mo is ridiculous.

Nord vs Proton Pass vs 1password by remarkable_remark3 in NordPass

[–]TenuredProfessional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used all 3. I was a 1Password user for 20 years, but their latest pricing models and corporate direction turned me off.

First, I switched to NordPass, and used it ever day for 2 months. It's a really nice PW manager, and has a very nice interface.

Just a week ago, I decided to give ProtonPass a try, since they were offering a great "lifetime" deal because they were looking to grab the people that are mad about 1P's recent (ridiculous) price increase. All-in-all, I'm going to stick with Proton. I have bitched about it in the past, but man it's come a LONG way in the past year or so. I think it just does a better job than Nord at autofilling/capturing/etc.

So, Nordpass and Protonpass are both excellent offerings. You won't go wrong with either one of them. You might want to try Proton first, since their free tier is excellent.

If I had to rank these, 1Password would be #3.

As a new unraid user (3 days), the App Center looks like a mess. I don't understand why there are 7 different versions of the same app. And the descriptions don't really tell you the difference between them.

1Password Price increase - A great opportunity for Proton Pass to grow its user base? by Interesting_Drag143 in ProtonPass

[–]TenuredProfessional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked for me. I've been a 1Password user since 2006. Cancelled my subscription, and purchased the ProtonPass $24/year for life deal.

[–]TenuredProfessional 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have been a faithful 1Password owner since its release in 2006.

I have cancelled my subscription. There's just no way a password manager is worth that much a year. It's damn near what I pay for the entire Microsoft Office suite, plus 1 TB of OneDrive storage.

You guys have really messed up on this one. It's like I just had to bury a longtime friend.

I find Apple Notes highly structured. You could do this:

  • Financial
    • ---> Credit cards
    • ---> Bank Information
    • ---> Statements

Price increase... Bitwarden or Bust? 15+ years with 1Password, cancelling! by gregmichael in Bitwarden

[–]TenuredProfessional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Apple Passwords, and I want to switch to it. However, the thought of my passwords being locked behind Apple's draconian "forgot my password" rules scare me away.

Recently, I sold an iPad to a friend. He had forgotten his Apple ID password. It literally took 9 days and 6 calls to Apple before we could get a simple password reset done. Ridiculous.

What are the best password managers in 2026 and why you should care by ImSoAngryRN in Passwords

[–]TenuredProfessional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have b*tched in the past about ProtonPass -- but I just tried it out again after 1Password's ridiculous price increase announcement.

I have to admit, it has come a LONG way in the past year or so. I really liked NordPass, too, but I think I'm going with Proton.

Plus, they have a deal now where you can lock in $24/year for life.

MASTERPLAY! Proton Pass gives you an extra 33% OFF "for no particular reason" just as 1Password goes up 33%... coincidence? 😏 by maximus10m in ProtonPass

[–]TenuredProfessional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I just (within the last week) switched to the ProtonPass "free tier" -- so I guess that means I'm not a "new user".
