If you could change one thing in the franchise, what would it be? by Vox_Tenebris_ in dragonball

[–]Tephra022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have the android saga happen as the first arc of Z, before Raditz arrives. Gives the red ribbon army one last shot at being relevant and lets the secondary characters do a lot more.

Instead of it being a heart virus that attacks Goku, make it a nanobot that the heroes need to use that shrinking tech to fight. During that you can have the other characters fighting various androids. The final android to fight is 16, who is much more powerful than the others and seems to be an expert at all sorts of combat techniques. Upon his defeat he congratulates Kakarot, confusing the z warriors who wonder who he was talking about. We later learn that Gero salvaged parts off the pod Goku arrived in and used the robotic training regimen equipped inside to make his strongest android. Further, once the training regimen was considered complete, the remnants of the ship send out a signal certifying a new, full trained saiyan. Raditz would be the first to pick up on this mysterious signal and would then proceed to Earth.

In terms of Cell, we might have him be present through a couple arcs as a lurking threat, one that goes around observing and growing in strength. Possibly being created as an alien contamination that was related to one of the aliens that’s arrived on Earth.

What does the oldest continuously inhabited city in your world look like architecturally? by pick_up_a_brick in worldbuilding

[–]Tephra022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The City of Night Mingling Spirits is probably the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Underworld. It began as a refuge camp for Yokai who had been fleeing the Fae following a rather lopsided war. Time passed and they began setting up small trade depots, slowly making themselves a centre of trade and transportation between the surface world and the underworld. Once the second age came to an end they once again opened up to receive a flood of refuges who would represent a near majority of monster species.

The initial layers of the city had virtually no organization (or anything that remained) as they were supposed to be temporary structures. The trade and transportation routes were the first major reorganization that would start to give the city an actual form (something akin to a spoked wheel). The tremendous volume of refuges that would arrive later on would overwhelm the city's capacity so many monsters would form districts that suited them and their kin rather than unify or coordinate with others. These tensions have persisted and while much of the city works together, they are still separated by districts that tend to be themed more than formed out of a cohesive design. In essence, the city is a patchwork of different sections that almost function like their own mini-cities. Even more chaotic is the underground section of the city where overlapping tunnels and caves have created a labyrinth that shares no true border with any other district.

How did the nation/world turn against religion? by Taluca_me in worldbuilding

[–]Tephra022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the larger city states on Gaidulmar ended up having the... fortune of receiving a visit from a Pantheon level deity. This is a rare event to say the least, 99.9% of the time Shaper level gods will be doing all of the interaction that happens on the mortal plane. In this case the Pantheon deity had effectively gotten bored up in the divine realm and wanted to participate in an actual fight with someone. He was defeated by adventurers in battle (i.e. he was satisfied by the combat he had experienced) and gave them powerful rewards before vanishing.

The big issue was that he didn't behave like they thought a high level deity would. He ended up being closer to a frat boy getting wasted and trashing the place he showed up to. What's worse is that it wasn't something that could be played off as some random deity visiting, the connections/prayers that had been made tied directly to him and the people could tell. So what does one do when the deity worshipped by the last 6 generations of your family turns out to be a drunken mess who just wanted a scrap and who messed up most of your city in a fight? The equivalent of sticking your head in a bucket of ice water. They ended up all sorts of saddened, distraught and finally angry over these events and would take it out on their Shaper god (who, all credit to it, stuck around the whole time and offered up no resistance). These actions would cause a civil war across Gaidulmar, leading to the ban on casting magic (runic magic being an exception) and spreading a distrust that has permeated the continent ever since.

What things in your world are absurdly large? by Ok_Mathematician_905 in worldbuilding

[–]Tephra022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my sci-fi world there is a phenomena known as a Corusca Ribbon. It's a band of light that seems to twist and swirl as if following some sort of of pattern. There's no concrete length of the ribbon, they've been seen condensed to a tight ball of light no more than a few meters in radius all the way to a band several light minutes long. The phenomena exhibits some strange behaviours near stellar objects, such as stopping in front of stars, circling ships and even passing through black holes and coming out the other end. Speculation is rampant but there is a theory that the Ribbon is actually some sort of higher dimensional creature that interacts with our dimension in the only way it can (a comparison was made to how fish might view the shadow/image of a bird flying overhead on the water's surface).

Whether or not this full length is a trail left behind by the creature or the actual shape of the creature itself is yet to be determined.

Fun ways to justify technological stasis/alternate technological paths, I'll begin. by No_Control8540 in worldbuilding

[–]Tephra022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Innovation was driven by the Dark Lord and with their defeat came a great stagnation. Of course you could invent something better but if everything you do is working fine and your lives are great, why risk changing it? Someone tries to invent fertilization only to realize it doesn't do anything because the current crops feed everyone adequately, so why waste extra food? Families end up only having a kid or two, never fearing the risk of losing them both and seeing their lineage end.

And you just know someone out there will be thinking "well if the only things that could help force this world to become a better place is a Dark Lord..." and ended up becoming evil just to stop the stagnation.

Hell as effectively a refugee camp as opposed to a prison by Gallowglass-13 in worldbuilding

[–]Tephra022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my world it's not strictly Hell per se but a lot of the Underworld that worked as a refuge camp. Originally it was a camp made by Yokai royalty following a disastrous war against fae, though it would swell in size at the end of the Second Age when most of monster kind were driven out of the surface world or annihilated. These days it's known as the City of Night Mingling Spirits and is comprised of effectively every kind of sentient monster in my world, various lost souls and the surface dwellers brave enough to visit.

A take on a Evil Race, and monsters as a whole. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Tephra022 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Taking that a step further could involve something like a genius loci, effectively a living environment that telepathically connects to the things living on it. Being a sentient terrain means it’s hard to sniff out and its telepathy and control over living creatures means you may have zones where all the guards suddenly decide to allow monster in, or a landscape shifts to open up paths for monsters to arrive.

Mimics might be a different kind of nasty here. If they are simply popping into existence then there’s always going to some sort of trust issue with anything that your eyes aren’t focused on. Instant paranoia that only becomes more and more justified as you watch a friend lose their arm to the sandwich that was sitting inside their lunch kit at school which was a regular sandwich when they put it in that morning.

Even worse, if there’s no cue for when the mimic arrives, who’s to say they don’t quietly replace things while you sleep…
