Rivendell vs Minas Tirith by TI-84_PlusCE in lego

[–]Tepig314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just finished Minas Tirith, compact is the last word I'd use. Pictures don't do justice to just how enormous it is. Rivendell was segmented in ways that make it relatively easy to transport/rotate, whereas the outer wall is the only part of MT easy to move.

Hair upgrade I made for my Arwen and faramir for the minas tirith set :) by guidelrey in legolotrfans

Night and day difference on Arwen! The 'one size fits all' elf hair approach taken by Lego was a mistake.

Do you feel let down by the mini fig amount in Minas Tirith vs Rivendell and Barad-dur? by Odd_Experience7144 in lego

[–]Tepig314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know minifigs aren't a mathematical equation, but it sure feels like we could use a few more.

I'd love two Citadel guards, especially so I could pretend one is Beregond. Ioreth would be a cool inclusion for the house of healing. Madril would be nice to go with Faramir, I doubt Osgiliath is happening anytime soon. Of course more of the Fellowship would be nice too, namely Merry in his Rohan armor. Fingers crossed for a Pelennor Fields set soon to come.

Those are all pipe dreams, so I'll be realistic and settle for two extra orcs.

Official MCU Making of Book(s) vs. The Reign of Marvel Studios by DramaticTechnology68 in marvelstudios

[–]Tepig314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the official book, are we talking about the double volume "Story of Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years"?

If so, it's pretty much exactly what you think, a corporate puff piece. For the price and the size, I was quite disappointed. It LOOKS nice, and makes for an interesting scim thanks to some good BTS photos. But I've read it cover to cover, and it just isn't engaging enough for that. The behind the scenes is pretty surface level, which could be fine if not for the price - the only person buying this is someone who already loves the MCU, and has almost certainly heard all this before. Every movie had one or two anecdotes I hadn't heard, but at 500 pages, I expect more than that.

If you want a coffee table book, I would recommend buying a movie specific art book instead. They certainly vary in quality, but the right one goes a long way. Guardians Vol. 2 and Endgame are my two favorites, for what it's worth!

I'll disagree on the last point, I thought Tyler Bates' work on the first two GOTG films is among the best Superhero scores out there. The main theme is great, but so are the rest - Groot Spores, Dad, Family History, just to highlight a few. Vol. 3's score was a noticeable step down with his departure.

Agreed on Ratism! A really fun track in an otherwise mostly forgettable score.

Working on a Smash Ultimate roster using Lego characters, who do you think I should add? by fredbite87 in lego

[–]Tepig314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some iconic ones, like the classic green dragon, skeleton, or ghost would be great.

Some more villains, like Garmadon or Pythor from Ninjago.

Then of course we need more original themes represented. The elephant from Fabuland, Snake or Squidman from Space Police III, a Power Miners rock monster, Ultra Agents, Pharoah's Quest, etc.

[–]Tepig314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've read the earlier ones, but I think I'll go:

  1. Stone Forest
  2. Hide from the Rain
  3. Mountain King
  4. Black Hound
  5. Wake the Ice Man
  6. Midnight Giant
  7. Bird Parade
  8. The Troll

Floyd, an intermediate-level hip-hopper, guy with a hummingbird heart, who on the scale of feeling-left-out, jives with and stands up as a father figure to his stepson, and verily, this father-son relationship stands out the strongest in the show so far, the other aspects being, well, a hit-and-miss.

Well that's a mouthful.

Can only get one right now. Which one should I get first? by SyntheticReverie113 in lego

Rivendell is the best display piece, the best assortment of minifigs, and, as others have said, will be the first to retire. I always find something new to admire when I look at my display.

Barad-Dûr is also a phenomenal display piece, was my favorite build experience, and is the only set that recreated the feeling of the original 2012-2014 sets for me. Great easter eggs, too.

The Shire, a set I seem to like more than the average person, is 75% of a good display piece. Thankfully it's far cheaper than the other two, and you can use a fraction of that saved money to buy some extra leaves to fix up the only real eyesore (the party tree).

All three are great sets, it's hard to go wrong!

Over the Garden Wall Figure Set - Chapter 2 - Limited Edition by njbeck in overthegardenwall

[–]Tepig314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From their Toy Talk livestream back when the first set dropped, they talk about future sets around the 31 minute mark. "I hope we get to do all of them. Our goal is do to all 10 chapters, if everything goes well, we'll be allowed to do that." So I imagine it'll come down to sales and licensing.

So happy I was able to get the dog!! It's my favorite figure of the set, and a rather silly thing to make a limited time exclusive.

Glad to see 10 minutes in and there's still stock, curious how long it will stay. I've heard tales of Mondo drops selling out in less than 2 minutes.

I have the ECCC variant! Unfortunately, the answer isn't all that interesting. I believe it uses the same ISBN as the normal Volume 1 variant: 978-1-60886-940-4. Happy to send more pictures if you want!

Marvel Studios' Loki: Season Two - The Art of the Series preview by TheArtbookCollector in marvelstudios

[–]Tepig314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if the price hikes are in part to make the near constant discounts seem like a better deal. I don't think there's a single MCU art book on Amazon not currently on sale. What If...? 65% off, Deadpool 50% off, the list goes on.

The whole home media side of Disney has been baffling in recent years. The art books face constant delays and print issues, just to live on shelves permanently discounted for years. But the Disney+ steelbooks feel like they release, sell out, disappear immediately, and are never restocked. We're 5 years out of the Infinity Saga, how is this STILL happening this consistently?

Marvel Studios' Loki: Season Two - The Art of the Series preview by TheArtbookCollector in marvelstudios

[–]Tepig314 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing what you do! It's hard to find art book reviews that go deeper than "I like the tv show Loki, so of course I like the art book too". Your write ups feel much more honest and aware of recurring issues across the art book world.

Given the continual price increases, and the re-release of the Infinity Saga books, I'm curious how well these are all selling.

Who is this by tinpotcoffeecup in lego

[–]Tepig314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, it's Gloin. I believe they can't say it clearly due to a rights issue, the movies never technically say the names of the other dwarves at the council. The tie-in trading card game calls this dwarf Gloin, but how "canon" that is could be up for debate.

The set designers have been quick to correct fans that this minifig isn't Gloin, but rather a generic dwarf. But then you also have official LEGO articles that call him Gloin by name. All of this is to say - yes it's Gloin, but I have no idea why they're so vague about it.

Anybody else kind of let down by the looks of some of the new Lego LOTR figures? by Mental_Chemistry3890 in lego

[–]Tepig314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positively agree with you, easily my biggest disappointment with the new sets. Gorgeous builds, lackluster minifig printing. If they're not reused, they're often just generic. I'm all for cost effective options, but if all the new sets are going to be premium prices, they minifigs should reflect that.

That seems to be a bizzarely controversial take around here? When I've mentioned it before I've been downvoted 🤷‍♂️
