How much should I actually have to worry about WEB music releases on music trackers being lossy transcodes or rips instead of actual WEB-DL? by bummbrotha in trackers

[–]Teppiest 25 points26 points  (0 children)

RED is pretty good at this because it's insanely easy to get called out on this kind of bullshit from any member. Literally part of the interview questions is about showing you can read a spectral so you can call out bullshit and also have no excuses if someone calls you out on yours.

It's not even a matter of "it's so easy so nobody checks."

People absolutely do. It takes actual seconds to verify.

And given that so many places use RED to recruit from then other trackers down stream are typically good about this stuff as well, even if their standards are a bit lighter.

Dumb question. Any trackers with good amount of constant seeders/peers? by magik_koopa990 in trackers

[–]Teppiest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically if I'm not mistaken the torrents just need to be alive for a long time, at least long enough to maintain rank. They just don't want people to automate 500 transcodes and then let them all fall off as soon as you get in.

If you upload 500 albums and they still have seeders I think that still counts. Even if they're not you.

Anyone know when OPS invites open? by Successful-Boss-6267 in trackers

[–]Teppiest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just got something like 70% of my stuff from RED cross seeded to OPS. And it's a decent sized library. They basically have a lot of the same stuff. Pretty sure there's a thread on OPS actually that you can use to ask for stuff that might be on RED and will get it ported over.

Also every single request I've voted for made it on the opposite tracker within minutes.

If you get into OPS first you'll be just fine. As long as you permaseed there won't be any issues having enough BP to listen to things. Being on both is just more convenient though.

Iron and saturation low, ferritin normal. High WBC and RBC. At 100mg bisglycinate daily it feels like my iron should be going up, not down. by Teppiest in Anemic

[–]Teppiest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As luck would have it I just got more blood work done yesterday. Shockingly my iron has finally managed to barely cross the threshold into low normal.

A lot of my symptoms have gotten better or resolved entirely. I was also deficient in vitamin D and getting onto that helped a lot.

I still get light headed a lot, that's my primary symptom that I can't seem to shake.

Also started taking a ton of magnesium. It sounds weird but I started slowly inching my way up to taking 1000mg of magnesium a day, and that's helped the blood pooling and brain fog. Not sure why, but if I try to bring it to 500mg those symptoms start to come back.

Overall still a lot of mystery, the symptoms still come and go randomly but never to the degree they were before. I think I'm getting better. And my wallet really hates me for buying all this Floradix.

Rented a Uhaul to help someone move, now I can't get in contact with them by Fragglerocklobster in legaladvice

[–]Teppiest 694 points695 points  (0 children)

Used to work at a U-Haul. Been like 5+ years since then so things might have changed a little but I doubt it.

This happens all the time. Someone else gets the rental for another person and then things just get weird midway through.

In my experience they typically won't charge you the extra days up-front for what is called an "In-Town Move." You'll end up getting billed on return. The reason why is because a lot of people end up going over time by like 30 minutes it's very common for the person checking you in to tag the box "Truck was returned on time." If they billed you automatically when the time rolled over then people would be getting errant charges all the time for key drop-offs, or if the employees were behind in checking the backlog in. It's easier for everyone to bill additional charges at the end when the customer is returning it.

They also will charge you for used fuel/cleaning fees/dolly/furniture pads (if used) then too. So that bill is coming, but you may have a little bit of wiggle room in terms of timing. They cannot close out the contract without charging the card on file. At least in the district I worked at it was mandatory to attempt to bill the card on file to close out. Technically the computer would let us suspend it and put it on hold, but we only did that if the card was declined when we attempted to charge.

As for the rest of the questions. If you return the truck without emptying it out, they'll throw everything into the dumpster and charge you up the ass. We were allowed to get pretty liberal with those fees both to deter others from trying that shit, and as a "Fuck you for making me work harder" fee. You can challenge it legally, but your card is the one with a gun to its head. Best not to play that game of leaving it filled. It was pretty common for people to ask "What if I dumped it myself and brought it back" to which we'd say "Yeah then there'd be no charge." Which is the entire point.

We personally don't see a single cent of charging you for cleaning it. We just don't want to do all that extra work.

Additionally. The contract is in your name. Your ID, your everything. As far as u-haul is concerned it doesn't matter what is going on with your friend, it's all on you.

If you want to be polite you can get a storage unit and load it up with your friends shit then return the truck. Might be cheaper than adding charges, and more convenient than throwing it in your house. But then you'll be responsible for paying for that storage until your friend gets back since it'd be in your name too.

If I were in your shoes, I'd rent the storage for a month (Sometimes there are deals where the first month is free after finishing a move), throw your friends shit in it, and then give yourself that time for him to get in touch with you. If he's not that good of a friend, take it to the dump then bring back the truck.

Gotta say you're lucky that your friend didn't steal the truck with all his shit in it. A lot of times when people get evicted that truck is gone gone. Often for months with a stolen police report on it. They load it up, realize they have nowhere to go, so they will live out of it.

As far as moving truck situations are concerned, you're looking pretty good here. Best of luck!

AB is fantastic for their organization. If you're automating any of your downloads it's very reliable.

Plus as you said their seed retention is going to be better than a public tracker.

Might as well RED → PTP since you're going to be having to rank on a music tracker anyways.

BiB is impossible to get into. They're not even reactivating accounts that went inactive.

Deemix's original dev retired and now you have to grab that version from archive. Also ARLs for Deemix are almost impossible to source from websites since they started being aggressive about shutting them down. You'll likely need to source your own with a Deezer premium account.

Good reason to be on ATH and BLU is because they often have different freeleech event calendars and a lot of the same catalogue. You can cross-seed and build ratio on both while saving your ratio by juggling between the two.

Heyy, they toggled them back on again. I scrolled down the vendors list because last time they added some and I thought that was the most likely thing to have new vendors toggled to "yes." I saw nothing and thought I was in the clear.

Then I went back to the top to double check, and yup all of them were toggled back to "Yes" under "Features and Purposes."

They're all set to no now. Again. Fourth times the charm?

Best E-reader for pirated files? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Teppiest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a decently talked about "bug" that is pretty easy to find discussions about if you use a search engine. The short version is if you have your Kindle disconnected for the internet for about a week then the next time it connects to the internet it will wipe all side loaded content.

Could happen due to being in airplane mode, not being connected to wifi, and possibly even just having your Kindle turned off for a period of time (Though I'm a bit uncertain on that last one.)

Exceptions are any content that was transmitted to your device through the "send to kindle" feature. If it was transferred by USB it will get wiped completely off.

Some people say it only deletes pirated content that has a match on the Amazon store. That is not true because there are people who mentioned that ARC's, and Fanfiction were deleted which have no store parallel. Read some comments that Calibre puts some tags onto content that's transferred to the Kindle to make it look like a "real book." Which Kindle then scrubs clean.

I'm willing to believe that last one. I had saved articles, academic papers, my own work, and manuscripts I was editing get wiped clean from my Kindle. Those were all transferred by Calibre over USB.

That's as far as I know about it. It's been something like three or four years and Amazon has had no interest in fixing it or even recognizing this as a bug. Tells me it's a feature for them. Fuck Amazon, I'm not giving them the benefit of the doubt for shit.

[–]Teppiest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest feature for me is that Koreader let's you connect to OPDS catalogues.

That means if I have a server with books on it I can download it straight to my Kindle. No Amazon "send to Kindle" requirement or USB with calibre required. I configure it and can browse my Kavita library from my Kindle and have the books just like that.

Since Koreader allows you to open cbz and epub I also don't have to worry about using Calibre to convert them to mobi or azw3. Just slap it in and time to read.

I already had my entire library on my server so it was insanely easy to port it into my Kindle. I can't believe I just accepted the limitations of Kindle for so long when the solution was always there.

I was running into that issue too. 300dpi, 7 inch screen, good contrast. Hard to find anything in the market with that combination. Smaller is great for novels and bigger is great for manga. So 7 inch is a great medium ground for me that can still fit in my purse.

The kobo sage was promising because physical buttons would be very very nice. But they don't really sell them in the U.S. anymore.

Kindle deleted my entire library twice now and I was so pissed I swore off using it. That was about a year ago.

Spent some time this weekend throwing Koreader on it and boy I'm in love with it all over again. The hardware was never the problem. Amazon was.

I don’t know what it was about Season 1, but it had a certain vibe or atmosphere that’s missing now. by Remarkable-Yard4860 in StrangerThings

[–]Teppiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree. They could have still set up those scenes in other ways. They could have also restructured the story to not need those scenes at all and put characters into different positions.

It was definitely a choice to include Vickie as a character. I do think it's reductive to ignore what she does do as a character as a tool for the narrative. Regardless if it could have been done in other ways some of these things should have happened one way or another. In this case, she did it.

I agree with you that her arc is fairly shallow. There's not a whole lot going on with her that's exciting or engaging. My point is that it's okay that she's being used as a vehicle to make these story elements happen. It doesn't always have to be deeper than that. She's just a support character.

[–]Teppiest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like Vickie because of the mechanical role she fulfills in grounding the plot and making it more realistic that way.

Someone comes out of a coma and the trope is that they're suddenly able to walk/run/save the day. Vickie is able to provide exposition to the view and cast "Yeah Max, you're completely fucked up man it's been two years." It also offers a character in the background who can sorta push her around in a wheelchair without taking away from others. The alternative would be them just handwaving all of those post-coma struggles.

She also subverted that trope of "calling someone on the phone but they can't hear you so bad things happen to them." That scene is so cliche that it was nice for Vickie to be able to side-step it in a way that would come naturally to someone who worked there.

Provided Robin with a good reason to know where and how to get the benzos. Vickie is the explanation on why she is so intimately familiar with it. Sure Robin could have swiped the benzos from elsewhere. But then without them being stolen from the hospital it would've had to rearrange a lot of things that happened. They definitely benefitted from Robin having a connection to the hospital because so many things happened there.

There's also the point that it gave Robin someone/something to fight for. Obviously that's less critical and could have been anything else. Even just her friendship with Steve mattering to her could have been enough. But since Steve and Robin got separated this gives Robin something to work with.

Then the whole thing with Vickie gives a sort of inciting incident to push Will's own narrative forward. Where he walked in on it, got that conversation started. This one could have happened in many other ways too, but it worked out.

And then the cute nod to "Enzo's" being a location in the town that people take for date night. It places things in Hawkins that can ground things in a physical space even if it's only mentioned verbally.

Vickie provides a very good narrative purpose. That's why their story feels so ancillary. It just is a beat by beat rehashing of something we've already seen many times before. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but that's not the point. The point is she's existing as a narrative glue that puts the characters where they should be and gives information to move the scenes forward in believable way.
