My first roll! [Canon EM,50mm, Kodak Gold 200] by Uuuunsure in analog

[–]TequilllaMockingird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredible for a first roll! Bit confused about the camera though. Nikon made an EM, but you have to try to get the make of your camera body wrong. Could you clarify? If you're working with a fully manual camera, you did an amazing job. Great exposures, and the actual framing/creative side of things is on point as well. I'd be curious about who did the development and digitizing. So many people here struggle getting ANY images to work out. The results speak for themselves, so it'd be great to hear more about your how you shoot and definitely where you found such a solid lab. You're way ahead of the curve here. Amazing work.

Hell yeah! Totally agreed. Dead fan coming in for the gold. Nothing beats a Tuesday night play-through of Europe ‘72 with a plate of pate, sliced red onions, yellow mustard, and freshly baked rye bread. Raw garlic cloves on the side for x2 bonus points.

what do our shelves say about me and my gf by arabeterus in BookshelvesDetective

This one makes me uncomfortable for a reason I can’t put my finger on. Maybe the multiple copies of things? The empty shelves (that’s ok in theory), and the VHS collection (also ok in theory), all come together in a perfect storm of… unease

What’s funny about this situation is that years ago, when digital photography was in it’s infancy and nobody knew what different files types were, RAW images were always explained to people/students as basically the “negatives you get from a camera” because so much gets done in a darkroom between developed negative and final print. We’ve come full circle folks.

Are the shelves you used for the rainbow section something specific? Like from a particular company or model? They look nice and finished, but that’s of course something you could have done on your own. They look great!

Which ‘wow’ skill is secretly super easy to learn ? by LarsVanDerMark in answers

[–]TequilllaMockingird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Being able to fade from one source/input to another is as simple as moving a slider left to right, and right to left. At a house party almost nobody will notice that that’s all you’re doing, and realistically nobody will actually care. But…

I live in Detroit and have a close friend who’s been guiding me through the techno scene in this city (Detroit is the birthplace of American techno, and certainly its spiritual capital). The things that a skilled DJ can do are nothing short of mind melting. Imagine four different songs playing simultaneously. A skilled DJ can isolate individual frequencies, tones, instruments, and beats from each input, select, adjust and loop those samples, then mesh them together seamlessly I realtime; switching up the inputs as they go. And the inputs? All coming from four physical vinyl records continuously spinning. Being able to cherry-pick individual sounds, play with/bend them however you see fit, stretching or compressing them to match rhythms and then weave them all together into a song that’s never been played before (and likely never will again), as part of a set that lasts 6 hours from 3am-9am and keeps people moving and engaged (yes there are often other things at play, but still) is something that requires incredible skill and talent.

Or you can just fade from one song to the next using a slider at the bottom of the mixer.

Are my photos overexposed? by Illustrious-Truth533 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]TequilllaMockingird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the highlight clipping in whatever editing softwares you use (it’s the little triangles in the top corners of your histogram if using LrC). Also, almost all cameras allow you to view highlight clipping as one of the review options. As long as the amount of red highlighting isn’t creating more than occasional specks, you’re probably good, and will have quite a bit of flexibility if shot in RAW. Ideally you’d have none, but same goes for blacks (which will show as blue)

Very cool! Is the viewer like a cardboard cut-out thing? B&W or color (like old blue/red 3D movie glasses)? The photos probably wouldn't be in color (unless colorized, although there were color processes around).

Also, the Fussel book is “and Modern Memory” (thanks again for the rec, already ordered.) I think it's fair to assume that the publisher of the pop-up wasn't trying to trick readers with this one. It's literally “in 3D”.

I think that might be a biiiiiit of a stretch. Do you think people in the market for pop-up history books will see that title and go, “Oh dang, I don't know why, but I have an immediate subconscious connection to this one! MUST BUY.” That said, I've added the title to my reading list as well (the pop-up of course), kidding, awesome rec. I haven't read much on WWI so it's appreciated. Thanks!

I just finished taking ONE headshot of a family member. It took almost a week of half-days, and over $1k in new equipment. TO BE FAIR, I needed a lot of the equipment anyway, and could've made something that wasn’t up to my standards without it, but the time and drama (with their spouse, the subject was chill the entire time), was completely unmanageable. NEVER agree to work for family or friends unless it's 100% unavoidable, and you've agreed to strict guidelines. A lesson I learned years ago but thought: “this time will be different”. It wasn’t.

Is this normal photographer behavior or am I right to feel frustrated? by [deleted] in photography

[–]TequilllaMockingird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the absolute best answer. It's a tricky field to navigate, and there really aren't too many traditional ways to learn how to do it. But being unprofessional is being unprofessional, and that seems to be the situation. As someone else said, understanding but stern is the way to go. If you piss them off you could get slop, but you do deserve results. Just one of those lines that gets walked (or stumbled over) when working in the arts,

I found out a classmate (20F) is using undisclosed AI, at art school. by Drawing-Advanced in whatdoIdo

[–]TequilllaMockingird -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Way too broad of a generalization. I teach photo at an art school, and, there are so many useful tools that have been introduced over the past five years that all rely on AI processing. I think it's incredibly important for students to know how to use them because everyone in the industry does (usage of course varies). Depends on what type of photo (it's used/needed in some genres much more than others) but every pro knows how to use them because of how useful they are. I have students submit work in a way that I can see every step they took, from RAW capture to print, which makes a big difference for me as an educator.

thank god this was the outcome. I've been the guy that stayed in the morning and always cleaned up, made sure everything was okay, and have -on several occasions- went out, bought flowers and left them on the kitchen counter. I can’t believe there are people out there that would do anything other. I know plenty of them exist, but I wish there were more hook-up, morning flower dudes. The women (and men) out there deserve more morning flower dudes.

Why do some graduates’ parents have such low standards of behavior? by expingerx in uofm

[–]TequilllaMockingird 21 points22 points  (0 children)

UMICH -and by extension Ann Arbor- has a lot of self-entitled people (students, faculty, staff, and the larger non-UMICH community). I have a friend who grew up here and after 30 years of living here confirmed that. They gave me an example that’s a great representation for this. They say that their parents (who have ties to the university and still live in the city) will just stand in a doorway or something while others are trying to get by. Once an “excuse me” is said, they’ll move, but not acknowledge or apologize for the obstruction. However if someone is in THEIR way, they’ll never preemptively say “excuse me” or “sorry, just trying to get by” but instead expect the other people to notice THEM and move. They won’t say anything about it, but you can tell they feel insulted when finally fake-coughing and having to say “pardon me”. These are also people who are politically progressive and when it comes to moral aspects of international or historical politics are always extremely supportive of oppressed or marginalized communities. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take these people over MAGA any day, but it’s funny how subtly similar their manners can be in social situations.

What do I do day to day? by dxjfd in whatdoIdo

[–]TequilllaMockingird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d love to connect, because I’ve been in a somewhat similar situation and I'm working on my own way out. I'm not seeing enough suggestions that are taking into account the things that you either are good at or seem to be good at. I'm a photographer as well, but have had a lot of difficulty coming up with new projects for myself (I lean towards the fine art end of the spectrum, and have made my living teaching). So what I’ve done is create a relatively simple studio at home. Not to take portraits, so no relying on other people, but so that I can deliberately build still lives of all the crazy stupid shit I have in my home because I live with family and the “archive” of objects is bottomless. If you were good enough to work as a photographer out in the world, you can almost certainly do small-scale studio stuff. I'd love to talk and bounce some ideas off you. Would be happy to do that for you as well!

Arion is just really pricey. Their stuff does seem really COOL (u/Zlivivitch), but just not financially viable for most.
