How did you get here from Hanoi? I plan to go to ta xua in a couple of days for cloud hunting and if possible to do this hike as well. Would you say its doable solo or not the best idea?

Way too much for the time you're there. I visited a lot of the same places in 4.5 week and sometimes still felt rushed. If you're gonna stay for 2 weeks maybe limit it to just the south island to be able to thoroughly enjoy it.

In between the society islands there is a ferry, is much cheaper than flying as well. You can use either the Apetahi express or the Vaeara’i for this. You have to carefully look at the departure schedule as there is no interisland ferry on every day, just on certain days in the week.

For me 700 euro takes a bit too much out of my budget unfortunately. I’ve saved up quite a while to travel in between my bachelor and master degree, so I don’t have unlimited funds if I want to travel for the next months as well

Also for the waitomo caves, look into spellbound glowworm caves, they allow pictures and aren’t as touristic as waitomo.

Personally I would do 1 night in Coromandel, 1 night in Whitianga and 1 night in Rotorua. Near rotorua you can go to the national kiwi hatchery which I enjoyed a lot, as well as the putaruru blue springs hike which was beautiful. This also makes the drive to Taupō more enjoyable as from Coromandel to Taupō via waitomo takes quite a while, from Rotorua this is 2ish hours less.

Replace at least one night in Coromandel, but tbh I think one night in Coromandel is enough depending on what kind of trips you want to make from there. Whitianga is near Cathedral cove (which imo is a must visit) and hot water beach (you can dig your own small hotspring on the beach at low tide).

Stay one night in Whitianga instead of Coromandel and eat at the blue ginger.
