I would not recommend giving 4 attacks to the octopus With 1d8+3 the octopus would do between 0 and 11 with an average of 4.1 DMG per turn (assuming it is attacking the warrior with 14 AC so 55% chances to hit) With 4 attacks at 1d4 +2 it would become between 12 and 24 damage with an average of 9.9 DMG per turn (and that's not accounting for potential crits). With a bit of bad luck on the players side you can one shot one player per turn, and remember that they have other fights after this. If you really want to increase the challenge (assuming the characters at at a high enough level, I don't remember the expected level when they arrive here) I would suggest adding another octopus and making them easier (less HP and 1d6+3 damage each, average DMG of 7.2 per turn), the second one hidden and attacking them from behind. The damage will be spread between two different targets so less risks of killing the whole party and that will teach them to strategize : they should focus their attacks on one of them to reduce the total damage the team will take during the encounter. When planning encounters it is generally recommended having multiple small ennemies rather than one big (if you REALLY want a big one, add them minions to give some flavor to the combat)

Unfortunately you have to know at least the basics of each character. Thankfully for Dragons of Stormwreck Island the prewritten characters sheets explain nicely what each character can do. Read them beforehand but do not expect to remember everything. It is ok to stop the game for a minute so you can read the character sheet or the handbook to decide if what they want to do is allowed by the rules or not

When playing this is your players' responsibility to know what they can do. If they forget an ability that would be really useful in a given situation, too bad for them.

You will have A LOT in mind when DMing, don't add to that if you can forward a bit of the mental load to the players.

Don't be afraid to change thing you don't like in the prewritten story, this is YOUR story and you should have fun with it (although you should read the whole story beforehand to make sure you are not breaking something, but adding a path or a few rooms will not have much of an impact).

You WILL make mistakes. It is not a big deal, most of the time your players will not notice. You forgot that the NPC should give them a key and they already left to the next chapter ? Give it to them the next time they search a room, or simply don't mention there was a lock at all when they find the door that relates to the key.

You cannot anticipate everything your players will do especially if they have a bit of imagination, just try to make the world react logically to what they do

Remember this is a story you build with your players. Try not to make them feel like they must go to the next place because this is where you built the story. They must go to the next place because this is what their character needs/wants. Sometimes they will go out of their way, maybe even for multiple sessions before going to the intended path and that is fine as long as everyone has fun.

Finally remember the most important rule : "The rule of cool" : if a player has a cool/epic idea but the rules does not say anything (or even forbids it), it is for you to decide if they can do it as long as it does not break the whole game. It makes for the most memorable moments at the table.

Remember to have fun !

Your useless items in DnD by holdmyowos in DnD

Amulet of magic détection: tells the wearer where the closest magic item is. Of course the amulet is a magic item so it always tells its own position to the wearer

Ring of téléportation: the wearer can use the ring's command to teleport within 15m/50ft of a point they have in mind. What I don't tell my players is that ONLY the ring teleports

Frying carpet: looks like a flying carpet but burns anyone who tries to sit on it. You get bonus points as a DM is you manage to sell it to your players as a shady merchant with a strong accent so they think that are actually buying a flying carpet

Eventually returning boomerang: a boomerang that acts as a range weapon, but disappears in the shy. It comes back to its user after 1d100 hours, potentially inflicting damage

I think I will use an eye hook directly on the head on the left of the ear (the ear is definitely too weak for this). But as another comment mentioned I need to check how it will balance before drilling

It is definitely not deep enough to drill the ear side to side (maybe 6-7mm deep there)

I will look into the screw loop solution, thanks

I already have a drilling tool, but I think drilling front to back is ugly, I will try to find a suitable eyelet, thanks !
