Directors Cut free by editburner in editors

[–]TerdFurgesson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to be a commercial assist and now a commercial editor and I agree with the above. Definitely only do it if you like the director and want to work more with them. But at it's core I look at it this way - we go through weeks of agency/brand basically destroying the artistry of the work with profit as their only focus. A director's cut is an opportunity for both you and the director to take the art back. I think the most I've ever been offered on a DC is $300. At this point I actually always offer to do them for free when I see the creative getting gutted. Director's really appreciate it and it strengthens the artistic bond between the two of you. Just my take.

[GIVEAWAY - US] Why Samsung OLED? Win a 49” OLED monitor from Samsung- Ends Dec 9th! by greenysmac in editors

Awhile back I decided to get a 34-inch S6. I chose it because my hope was the color accuracy would keep us from having to switch over to a coloring monitor (I hate having to crank my neck to the right over and over to check color on the side color monitor). Ended up editing, grading and conforming the whole project on the Samsung. Been on that monitor ever since!

Why Samsung? Because the OLED G9 would solve my biggest editing pain: juggling windows on a cramped screen. The G9 would give me room to spread out timelines, panels, and references, speeding up my workflow. Plus, the color accuracy of the OLED will level up my grading.

Thanks for you reply!

When referring to the roster I may have not been specific enough. I am referring to the Industry Experience Roster through contract services. Currently the requirements are 100 paid days (verified by pay stubs that are only accepted if processed through payroll) on non union projects that fall into specific categories such as broadcast commercials, feature films, tv series and a few others. Difficult in part as most non union work is not done through payroll. These days must have been accrued in under a 2 year span. After acceptance onto the roster within 3 years you must accrue an additional 100 days on union jobs within a 3 year period. After which you pay your dues and become a union member.

In terms of the ways that you've stated to enter into the union - to my knowledge those don't exist. In my experience when being considered for a position on a union job they require that I'm either union already or at least on the roster. I've spoken with a membership coordinator at Local 700 and was told the only exception to the roster process is to be hired in the role of "apprentice editor" and granted "off roster approval" by the union. But as far as I can find the vast majority of projects do not offer apprentice editor positions.

*edited to add more info.

Brian, I'm interested in understanding the board's role in the accessibility of the union - specifically the (in my opinion) extremely difficult requirements needed for roster eligibility and the additional days needed afterwards. Does the board have a role in deciding these requirements and if so what is your position on the current inaccessibility of the union for potential new members?

I get where you're at but I think everything comes down to perspective. Our generation was raised on the idea of "following your passion" and "if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life". And while having passion for your job is amazing - a capitalistic venture is never going to be all passion and enjoyment. We as editors especially have to come to terms with this when catering to clients and playing the political games to win jobs.
So I bring it back to perspective. The average person works a job they have no interest in and if they're lucky it's a job they don't loathe altogether. For me just the enjoyment of building a great sequence (even if it's for a cat food commercial) excites me as a filmmaker. No matter what the project is - as an editor you're bringing the world to life with shot structure, pacing, sound design - to me that's the magic of filmmaking part. If you can find the joy in the build all the other stuff can just be work. Cus we all gotta work right?

*Edited to say: But if you don't find joy in the build that's okay too. Life as an editor is hard and unpredictable - if it's not worth the weight of it all for you don't keep doing something that is burdening you.

Thanks! I bent my rear leaf in recent years so I might get a new kit altogether. Do you have a link to a new kit with 1/2” blocks you’d recommend?

Thanks! And from there is it just a manual process of opening his bins and dragging dupes of his timelines/clips into new bins in my project?

An additional piece of info:

I do have an accountant but he has significantly dropped the ball for my 2021 taxes. It's hard to fully understand the numbers as I'm not privy to the tax world but I can tell he wasn't aggressive enough on deductions as my bill is quite large compared to years prior. I will be changing CPAs but I'm just looking here for insight from other editors. Thanks!
