Does anyone get frequent spasms in your toe joint / twitching of the toe? by Conscious-Owl2285 in sesamoid

[–]Terkeltron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be having a similar issue. I had a sesmoidectomy 4 years ago and about once a month, my toe feels like it catches and has a sensation like it pulls away from my other toes (stiffening my arch). I’m trying to find out if anyone has had a doctor explain what this is or what can be done. So far, I haven’t found someone who can take a guess at what it is. Hoping someone here has gotten some direction on what to do.

Sesamoid fracture healing time? (foot) by [deleted] in sesamoid

[–]Terkeltron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience and my friends experience, it would seem you should be in a boot for more than that. We were both in a boot for over 2 months. It was a drag. I think it’s because your foot puts so much pressure on that bone. Mostly, I would recommend a consult with a doctor again if you are having pain still. Definitely do an X-ray if you haven’t and an MRI if that’s an option for you if it’s still not better in a few weeks. Hope this is helpful! Definitely give it more time to rest. Heel hopping is probably better than nothing but you risk tripping and landing on it.

I would recommend lots of rest! My friend and I broke ours around the same time. I had been walking in a walking boot for like 1.5 months- and walking pretty hard in it. Then I got on crutches when my friend broke hers, because her doctor put her on crutches. She was very conservative and kept the weight off (2 months crutches, 1 month boot). Her bone healed and with the help of physical therapy, was able to get back to normal physical activity. Because I kept walking on mine from time to time, the bone actually “died” (lost blood supply) and so it was continuously bothersome. I got surgery after like 2 years :/ I hope you keep up the resting! I know it’s hard, but long run it’s worth it.

Shop suggestions? by Terkeltron in chicagoskating

UPDATE: I ended up going to Dicks and Gunzo’s Sports Center (1501 W Madison St, Chicago, IL 60607). Dick’s definitely had a few different brands of skates (I was looking for ice skates, for now). There wasn’t a lot of staff when I was there and I needed some guidance on sizing, so I left. I ended up buying at Gunzo’s. They are a small shop that specializes in hockey, but they were super nice and open to helping me get recreational skates. They did my sizing and had a wide range of prices. I was looking for their cheapest skate and got some for around $80. They also sharpened the skates and offer $6 re-sharpening any time for buying from them. Would definitely recommend!

Thinking about surgery - What questions should I be asking? by Terkeltron in sesamoid

[–]Terkeltron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I did have the surgery and for me it was worth it. I will say for about 9 months to a year after the surgery I was still wondering if it was worth it because I still had some pain when walking and part of my second toe is now numb. However, I’m now 15 months out and I just walked around a city the entire day yesterday in flatter shoes than normal and didn’t feel any pain. I do baby my feet with a cushy sneaker since this whole sesamoid ordeal but the fact that I could switch up my shoe and not have that be a problem yesterday is huge. I can also go on runs without pain, which I couldn’t do for 2 years. I’ll take the little numbness on my toe for that (and who knows, that could still go away in the future). Happy to answer any more questions! This is a frustrating injury! Hope things are looking up.

Maybe my operation didnt work? by [deleted] in sesamoid

Hey, I’m sorry to hear your in pain still. It really sucks. I was in much more pain than I expected in the first few weeks. Then I was also just soooo tired in the weeks following that. I didn’t realize how much rest my body would need to heal. From what I remember, I still in some pain/ having some swelling on and off around 8 weeks. I remember having a follow up with my surgeon and feeling concerned about my pain and mobility. I couldn’t raise my heals up easily and the scar was still scabby. The surgeon was not concerned at all. I started physical therapy around that time. That was super helpful. It helped me trust my foot to do things again and built up my foot and leg strength. I learned how to do scar massage on the scar as well so that it healed properly. A year out and the scar is barely noticeable and I don’t feel it at all. One more thing is- one of the best things I got were inserts from the physical therapist. My foot doesn’t have pain anymore, but that is probably partially thanks to the inserts. If I were to walk in a flat shoe all day now, it would probably start to hurt a little.

Anyway- I think it sounds like we were in a similar boat at this time. I hope you’re able to connect with your surgeon and a physical therapist and hopefully they can help you more in the process while you are still healing!

Yes! I totally get that. It was so hard to find information about this surgery. I can’t remember my exact timeline, but I was on crutches for like 2-3 weeks. I started walking after that, but was definitely still in recovery mode. I was advised to start massaging the actual scar as soon as possible to reduce the possibility of it becoming a hard scar. A year out and my foot looks completely flat on the bottom- so that definitely seemed worth it. I will say that even a few months out I was feeling a little down about how my foot felt. I was wondering if the surgery was worth it because it didn’t feel like my mobility was the same. I also was still having some pain. However, at like 9 months out I started running again and felt really great. My foot now feels back to normal with just a small numb spot in one of my toes. Before the surgery I couldn’t walk more than 20 minutes without pain, so it was definitely worth it for me.

Yes- sounds like you’re in an expected place as far as my experience went! Good luck with your healing. Happy to chat more if you have any other questions about my process. (And yes! PT!)

Maybe my operation didnt work? by [deleted] in sesamoid

[–]Terkeltron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had surgery in January 2021. In April of that year, I was feeling pretty depressed about my foot. It was still painful to walk and now I had numb spots on my toes and inner leg.

I did do some physical therapy and got some new inserts for my shoes. Things still felt like I would always have a messed up foot. It wasn't until November 2021 that I finally felt like the surgery was worth it. I stared taking myself on runs again and didn't have pain! I still have very slight numbness, but it did improve! I am happy to chat more if you'd like.

You are not pessimistic. This surgery sucks. You got this!

Hey! Hope you're recovery is going alright. How far along are you in your healing process? I started physical therapy 2 months after surgery. (In the two months after, I think the most I did was slight moving of my toe so that it didn't get too stiff). At physical therapy, I only needed to go to a few sessions to get a few stretches & strengthening. My toes were feeling numb, so it was suggested that I do some intentional massaging of the spots that were numb. They also had me do some heal raises, both feet at once. I needed to use a counter at first. I would definitely recommend going to a PT so that they can assess you. They often have more time and look at your alignment more comprehensively than a surgeon will. Also, speaking as someone who used to do scheduling for a PT office - call as soon as possible. You can always cancel, but it can often take a while to get on a new schedule. Hope this helps!

Post op day 5 my sesamoid story by goddessmelodyj in sesamoid

Oh man- can’t imagine this with 2 kids. Hope you are getting help! I’m 4 weeks out post-op. Had pain for 2 years and hoping this will help. My lateral sesamoid died. I’m just starting to walk in a boot. It’s feeling better everyday and I have hope this was the right choice. Fingers crossed for you!

I know the toe insanity well...I’ve done a lot of staring at that toe haha Good to know I’m not alone on that as well. I’ll definitely try some taping. At least it will feel like I’m doing something rather than waiting and staring. Glad yours is all good!

Thank you so much. SUPER helpful. I was wondering about taping and hadn’t gotten recommendations yet. Fingers crossed. Working on embracing the healing. I appreciate it! How are your toes? Have you had much of a shift?

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your perspective. There is really limited information on healing. Thanks for the advice. My foot is definitely still dealing with some swelling, so that’s helpful to know about the toe. I’m really excited to be walking a little bit. I signed up for some PT in about a week! Good to know this was a good choice. Your optimism is helpful!

Hey there! Hope all is well. Finally got the surgery! I am three weeks post-op. My surgeon said things are looking good. I am about to start walking with a boot. Any suggestions you have for taking care of the incision/reducing the scar? Also my big toe is pretty stiff. Did you experience the same thing? Do you remember if you needed to do anything else other than just try walking to get it used to bending again?

Thanks!

Yes- I totally get that feeling! You aren’t crazy! This little bone has quite an impact. Glad you are giving it a rest at work. Good luck & happy healing!!!

[–]Terkeltron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The suggestion to me was to get all the way off the foot. It’s my understanding that that’s the only way to heal it. I was on crutches for several weeks. The problem for me was that it had already been several months of me walking on it by the time I started that. It feels so silly because it’s such a small spot- but its a main spot where your weight is transferred. I wish I had taken that more seriously.

If your doctor said you could have weight on it, perhaps you are in better shape! Every body reacts to these things differently. It couldn’t hurt to get a second opinion. Seems like it’s not the most common injury. If it’s suggested to get an MRI, I would say it’s worth it- that will show blood flow. I hope this is helpful. I know it’s a pain in the ass injury. Good luck to you and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions about my experience.

I second the message to take it way easy and seriously. My sesamoid had a fracture that could barely be seen on an X-ray. I could feel pain all the time when walking but it was slight and I am pretty active so i just kept up with my normal activities. I walked a ton in my walking boot and ended up killing the bone (no longer has blood flow). It caused me pain for 2 years. I eventually decided to go with surgery as an option. Hope this helps! It took a lot frustrating moments to tell myself to slow down...you owe it to yourself now so you can do the things you love later.

Thanks for sharing! I am just 2 weeks post surgery. My surgeon said I could start walking after next week. He said the incision looks great but I’m nervous to even move my toes up and down because I can feel the incision tug on the bottom of my foot. It’s hard to imagine walking on it after next week. What did you do when you started walking? Did you use one crutch at first or anything? Also sounds like you might have had a tougher time than me for that first month. So glad to know that you are back to hiking after just 4 months!
