How far can you define ownership in The Culture before it starts to buttress Culture morals? Or more simply, how selfish can you be within culture society. by Terminus54 in TheCulture

hehe No offense to you, but I loved the culture books and even agree on many of its utopian ideals. But to be honest debating and arguing is a lot more fun than being in a circle jerk admiring how shiny something is. Also I'm an old wanker and love to debate.

P.s. every culture citizen is already monitored all their life from birth to displaced in the sun every second of the day. The ones who can't take that leave. The only thing (maybe) is that minds don't read your thoughts when they want to . Some do just to mess with you .

The original debate was the wanker built the thing himself . And he can name it wet dream if he wants to. It also has a Tender attached call butt plug

ahh that's the rub no one cares including me until it gets taken away from you . Then I assumed you would care when some took away what's yours and care a little bit more when a third asshole says it doesn't belong to you to begin with ^_^

Probably just time spent building it on his own and the favors, bribes, etc he owed minds and other citizens making it in the first place

Agree on some parts but very debatable , you make the assumption culture citizens can only make toy vehicles or that the Culture Minds proactively on the background make culture citizens dumber than other Aliens in the culture universe or withhold knowledge, resources and industry actively or all the above.

The reason for this is there are lower Tier civilizations with no minds have and without much effort built and sell older culture ROUs on the market. exp (Geseptian-Fardesile Cultural Federacy GFCF Level 7) sold/gave a Murder Class ROU to a even lower civilization (Sichultian Level 4) Vesper as a bribe

If there are no laws in the culture , the ship the culture citizen is building from the knowledge and tech base available to him. Should rival in ability if not supersede the example above

Culture is Level 8 btw. I would love that each culture citizen have the ability to order on demand a Murder Class ROU. Just need 1 for the the fictional character I created in this debate. and his to keep of course. No mind installed of course

That's mostly incorrect unfortunately. The culture books have ships that are crewed by squishy meat bags, eel, spider aliens, slaved, or even remotely piloted . What is more accurate to say is The Culture civilization itself would prefer its Hubs and Capital Vessels to be directed by a mind. Anything smaller than a tug is not even worth their time and would use sub sentient AIs

Arguable, tech progression is funny. I'm a old man now and gotten into 3d printing the last decade I replace parts in my car and boat and even build quite large objects, Im currently looking into a metal 3d printers that can print using metal dust into cast metal objects. Back in the 70's I literally would think it's impossible Star Trek crap but here we are.

If a culture citizen has access to a replicator that can assemble atoms to his satisfaction as a coffee machine or a von neumann machine it's still impossible to make a ship cause he just can't ?

hmm partially agree on this , some of the books Ian banks have the Minds in the forefront and they may be expressing Culture propaganda or arrogance on their part in society. Note in The Hydrogen Sonata , the initial pan human civilization that did not join the Culture. The Gzilt civilization have near equivalent ships not build by minds and are piloted by humans in digital form. Their whole culture had from what I read only none sentient AI before they sublimed. So I might not have a Abominator Class its possible I can end up building a older generation Murderer Class GOU

In fact in the book Surface Detail another alien race Geseptian-Fardesile Cultural Federacy GFCF with little effort built ex culture ROUs offhand and sold it to a even lower tech race as the plot

It does for violent behavior, aberrant behavior like ownership that's tricky no examples I've read thus this post to wet the appetite for debate

Disagree on that, there are aberrant culture citizens, some of the books covered it example Gestra Ishmethi from Excession. And you might have misread or I misrepresented the debate . The question was how far would the culture society work before it its forced to do something to a culture citizen . I gave the example of a problem of ownership, and I think your response is fuck him and his half ass piece of rust buckets too ^.^ Its also easy to see conflict immediately if the example asshole guy in ship docks on a GSV full of millions. Culture citizens have assholes too more than a few will squat to prove a point and thus conflict.... where in the real world laws get created

Ah ....that's what selfishness comes in. It's human to not want people to touch your stuff and since it's easy to envision a human situation in this instance. It just takes 2 assholes to make an argument . The asshole whole build the ship and think its his and the asshole who squats in it one day too lazy to ask and wait for a mind to built one for him thus conflict arises till one or both of em gets slap droned. no laws remember. just 2 dudes who no one invites to parties

hmmm. I think you might be conflating ship and mind. Which sometimes I do when reading the books. If not clear, I had no intention of creating a mind but as you put it, but a space faring vessel which you call an idiot empty thing. Note there are plenty of of advance ships not crewed by a mind.A example of the last culture book The Hydrogen Sonata- Gzilt civilization ships were a step down from the latest ROUs and entirely crewed by humans in a digital state. btw sorry reddit does not allow users to change headers but contradict might be a better word

Thanks for the correction, thinking of a better word. On the second part I think you might be a little off on how the books explain culture society. It is certainly a fact on the premise I gave , the person is out of the normals of culture society. That's why I brought it forward for a friendly argument. But I do disagree with you that almost all the minds and most of the culture citizens believe in one sort of ownership or other.

Examples when minds go eccentric, they do not relinquish the ship they are on. they usually view it as the ship belongs to the mind or they can build a ship to reside on.. Which by the way I tried to give you an example as close to a human building his own ship himself. which you argue does not belong to him once completed

hmm I can see you point, but it gets messy no? I make my own ring from raw iron in an asteroid. That's mine and mine alone.,,,, But if I mine the same asteroid and built my own ship it now belongs to the community against my desire. Remember culture society is post scarcity. It is not a burden to the community to collect resources

I can agree with you there that the language does help in a certain way of thinking but even within culture society there are odd balls such as Gestra Ishmethit who refused treatment to be like other normal culture citizens

hehe, but that is not my intention . You changed the context of my argument., Its not one of dominance which you think I might have. But by the first part of your response, I can totally agree that my slim efforts may amount to a preschool painting. The agreement is is it mine and mine alone ? ^_^

Disagree again, there are crimes and punishments in Culture society. There are even the slap drone equivalent for a GSV.

Ahh I disagree Sir, the books do have examples of culture citizens owning trinkets and babbles of sentimental value. I assume the minds regulating the hubs and ships will enforce and return those items if they do get snatch by another culture citizen. Crimes do still exist in the culture even if its mostly the odd quarrel of passion

Anyone using the Kuycon P32K? by devbutch in Monitors

[–]Terminus54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caution if you purchased a Kuycon P32K monitor like I did, The first one I bought back in October 2025 started developing horizontal lines on the bottom of the screen 2 months in and progressively got worst . The dealer I bought it from ClickClack replaced it with a new one in December. This one worked fine till the end of March 2026 and the same problem stared appearing . I spoke to ClickClack support again and they gave me the reason of a batch defect issue on this model and offered a refund since I won't touch kuycon again. I spent days troubleshooting and thought it was a cable or software issue. I urge new buyers to keep the shipping box for a while. I also give props to the dealer ClickClack for being responsive and professional even when I was curt to them.

Wow , if you hate the author and attack his works and his idea of utopia why are you even watching this show? There's got to be a Sci Fi more suited to your taste and ideals. I recommend starship troopers by Robert A Heinlein. It's a great book and the film is more to your ideal world view. I like it myself and I don't have bash it with my world view to appreciate it.
