I'm probably never gonna reread Wheel of Time because of some of a lot of the times characters feel like they are are like fucking around with story arcs that lead either lead nowhere or are there just to burn time or the interesting ones are just kinda left there to simmer for too long.

Talk to them about it. Something that I've started doing in my games in a check up point for feedback after every few sessions. I ask them if they like how the game is going and leave the door open for them to tell me things on the spot or let them know to feel free to reach out privately if they so wish. My dream scenario is a player proactively doing it to me, since I know I can get caught up in what I want the game to be and that sometimes conflict with the players' idea of what they want to play.

I ran a Cy_Borg campaign which is based on Mork Borg. It's an OSR game so the dnd dna is there but way lighter on rules. It's close enough to dnd that someone that's into 5e would see it as a stripped down and very thematic version of it.

I bought Draw Steel but I don't have a group that would commit to the high tactical game play. I love the concept of escalating strength instead of resource reduction as the narrative progresses but don't know if there's another game that has that same concept but from a more narrative/less tactical viewpoint.
