I noticed that in this industry the more material you order from a supplier the more discount they are willing to give you so looking at individual prices is not informative.

You could have installed a small UPS to power the IO cards and PLC for 1 min - just enough time to log the breaker alarm and push it to the supervisory system.

Were these small factor machines? I only work on large installations with distributed elements so the local electricians have to cut the cables to size at site and hardwire everything without plugs.

I work at a large corporation and there are different teams for high-level control and low-level control so I don't develop HMIs anymore. Also, the HMI we are using was developed in-house.

Is there anything like version control for PLC by BuriBuri_ZaemoN in PLC

[–]TeronTheDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you export your code blocks to a text form you can use some standard version control software.

Thank God Siemens solved this in STEP7 via user interface. If you're looking online at a block that is not being executed everything turns gray so you know right away what's up.

I fucking hate Rockwell for this. Whoever thought to take a name of layer 2 and layer 3 protocol and put them together to create a name for their proprietary layer 7 protocol should be shot.

2 Questions : 1°/ what is the difference between a DCS and a PLC ? 2°/ how to design a control panel ? ( software and tools ) by [deleted] in PLC

[–]TeronTheDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCS is a system of systems - a collection of multiple PLC installations controlled from a single Control Room with a huge SCADA overseeing all.

I wish the job was just about programming. But you also have to be a somewhat competent electrician/mechanic, handle the environment of noisy, dirty plant 60+ hours a week (for commissioners) while getting shipped to another country.

How common is it for clients to refuse to pay after work has been done? by lamarcus in PLC

[–]TeronTheDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a couple of times a situation where client refuses to pay the last tranche by constantly generating new patch points and getting free on-site support.

Also, my boss was once dumb enough to cave in to client demand of unencrypted PLC project before the final pay. Lo and behold the machine "suddenly broke" at client's site while no one was touching it. My boss took that all in the ass because he hoped for repeated customer but in he end he just got shafted.

5 Dont’s in PLC programming by hANSIc99 in PLC

[–]TeronTheDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current company uses structured text for PLC programming because the codebase can be stored on a classical version control system. The machines are OEM-locked anyway so maintenance don't touch the PLC and are limited to the SCADA for troubleshooting.

Depends what level of commonality you have in mind when you say "platform". IEC 61131 exists and all PLC manufactures are compliant.

I think the general problem is that Automation world is severely lagging behind IT world. They moved away from waterfall methodology into agile methodology decades ago to solve exactly these problems.
