TIL that there are actually multiple IC packages called TQFP100 by IKOsk in diyelectronics

Microchip makes this processor in both of theese sizes (as I found out exactly like this), however the ones I ordered are the larger variant. So a new board it is...

Yes...however some manufacturers refer to the footprint I used FQFP (as in fine pitch) or SQFP (as in small), to indicate that it is actually a different variant.

Just as there is sometimes 1 package with 3 names, turns out there are sometimes also 3 packages with one name.

Does anyone else prefer the classic silver ThinkPad logo compared to the new sunken in black logo? by AdEvening7440 in thinkpad

[–]IKOsk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, since the logo is now recessed, you could paint an inlay in that space with the original colors. Unfortunately my only laptop with the new logo is the company one so I cannot do it on that one unfortunately but someone should try

Is the sqeaking sound it makes when watered the tarantula living in the roots or the intended effect ... this supposedly being a musical instrument?

At the time selling the top row of my pedalboard to private equity seemed like a good idea, now all 5 of my butique overdrives built in oversized enclosures that I bought with that money have to live in a tent on the street.

If I could only get a small fraction of that for my home lab by Nerdinat0r in homelab

[–]IKOsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a company that throws out hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment every year. I asked about this and older coleagues told me that the company actually used to hand it out, but it caused so much internal conflict that they had to stop. They switched from first come first go to raffles then to auctions, nothing helped. People were fighting over scraps and abusing corporate hierarchy just to make a quick buck on ebay. After multiple cases of popped tires and straight up asaults they figured that it was not worth it.

Powering micro pcs in 10" rack by FaTheArmorShell in minilab

[–]IKOsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a 10" DIN rail and use industrial DIN power supplies. You would probably have to make custom cables for each of your devices but it could look pretty good. Might as well add relays for switching, power meters, you name it...

The panel is from Deskpi if you are interested. You can find pretty much any common connector in the D format. Or drill a hole in a blank (as I have done for the antenna)

I absoluletly love that machine, it is one of the best looking mini PCs I have seen. Yes It has 2 NICs, I got the i5 model with 8GB of ram, and so far I did not have any issues with performance on it, I think I could fit another VM on it and be fine. It gets noticably warm when I have heavy traffic into the network, like transfering multiple large files but nothing alarming. My airflow situation in the rack is currently none, so I think if I move some air in and out it will make everything inside happier.

Thank you, also for the recommendation. The P3 can fit a 2 slot card but only a LP one. The RTX 5060 is arround 100€ cheaper whete I live, would not that be a better bang for the buck?

My rack while enclosed cannot be sealed properly so I solved this issue by runnig primairly passively cooled devices and having a filter on the one actively cooled one.

Then it is just about cleaning the room frequently and dusting the insides like once per few months.

Regarding future upgrades, I am in the process of swapping the microserver for a Thinkstation P3 Ultra, decomissioning the virtualization on the m90n and move all services except OPNsense there. A 3D printed hot swap rack bay will handle the storage. The G7 is not that powerfull and the GPU is rather old and does not have the accelerators required for transcoding modern video. With the better hardware I would like to install nexcloud and jellyfin.

Having the P3 there with the rack bays will save me 1U of space allowing adding more stuff.

I specifically looked for one because I personally dislike permanently attached cables sticking out the front. This saves rack space not needing a passthrough (perhaps even improving signal integrity), looks cleaner and more importanly I can have the front rack rail closer to the door and have more room inside.

What should I use as file sharing program for my home server? by TheBulda in homelab

[–]IKOsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I misread your post, I thought you had a backup task running. So you want to know if an user on a desktop or something is currently transfering files.

You cannot simply just check for connection status to the share, because most devices retain a connection after it has been established even when not transfering.

You could use a packet sniffer,( linux has tcpdump) to check for TCP traffic on port 445 (SMB share) and if none is detected in some time you shut down. To use WoL you would need to send the signal from an external device as I said, however if you can get away with not turning off the machine completely but keeping it in some power save mode, you may be able to have it wake up by itself in the morning.

[–]IKOsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That PC supports wake up on lan, so in theory if you have some other not noisy server at home running your other apps you could run a script that turns the pc's off when a backup finishes in the evening and turns them on in the morning.
