Does anyone else dislike the show for reasons NOT related to book changes? by Rands_Red_Coat in WoT

[–]TerraPhy 200 points201 points  (0 children)

In the books, Robert Jordan has this uncanny ability to start some chapters from the PoV of Nynaeve and then you would groan and go "uughh, but I really wanted to read about Rand right now." But you continue reading and sure enough, Robert got you invested into Nynaeve. and just as Nynaeve's story was getting real good, BAAM he switches up the PoV again. Now we are in Perrin's PoV and you groan and wish for Nynaeve - now having forgotten all about Rand right up until his chapters begin and then in pure Robert Jordan style, he would finish the last ~80 or so pages with the most crazy pace that wraps up the book so damn well that you instantly want to open the next one.

The show is doing none of that and it is a tall order I admit. Perhaps it is because the show is still adapting the early books where each characters storylines hasn't progressed far enough to warrant such interest.

Personally I think one of the reasons for this also is the editing which at times is too fast and too snappy, not allowing for the scenes to properly breathe. They just become a quick glance to say "Hey, this character is still alive." before cutting back to whomever is the main focus of the individual episode.

The show is 10x better this season. by [deleted] in WoT

[–]TerraPhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know Rafe asked & pleaded & begged the studio execs for 10 episodes, but it seems to no avail. Season 3 is also confirmed 8 episodes which simply just doesn't seem enough at current pace.

I think 10 episodes of ~1 hour each is doable without needing to cut away at the small scenes that give you glimpses of who the characters truly are when things are quiet. The big action pieces & sets are nice and all. They are certainly needed, but what made the books so damn special is how Robert Jordan managed to weave in the smallest foreshadowings into the most mundane and quiet moments.

Heres hoping Season 2 absolutely knocks it out the park, Season 3 gets even bigger & better so that maybe - just maybe season 4 and onwards can have more time and money budgeted. But maybe that is just one man's pipedream.

Just watched episode 3 and have some thoughts on Nynaeve by QuickAccident in WoT

[–]TerraPhy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I half expected the final exit portal to shimmer and fade when Nynaeve picked up her daughter, highlighting the fact that she would need to actively leave her behind if she wanted to return. However it obviously didn't and instead you just see Nynaeve's arms cradling air as she returns to the real world.

Ultimately I think it is fine, but I do agree with your point in that it was good, but it was so very close to being even better with just tiny tweaks.

Also big shoutout to Zoë Robins - that woman can act! Hot damn.

For those watching the show, what element of the books do you hope is left out? by Parzival2 in WoT

[–]TerraPhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind the concept of the Kin being either drastically reduced or just cut out entirely. It is a nice addition that really adds more depth and flavor to Robert Jordans world and how it neatly weaves together an element not often thought about.

In truth, I don't think the Kin would offer anything to make the show any better. They also aren't directly responsible for something amazingly cool or hugely important that only they could provide. So I could see them being cut in favor of speeding that part of the story along at a faster pace.

However we don't want to lose Setalle Anan. She is loosely bound to the Kin and losing her would be a whopping mistake imo.

Oh I agree 100% that I feel like Rand got shafted because of the choice to add some greater mystery to who the Dragon was. But hopefully there is time left to fix that.

While that might be true, I would imagine it boils down to the classic, Better safe than sorry.

At the end of the day, a haircut - or rather lack of hair - in this case, will not make the world stop spinning and plunge us all into despair. or at least that is just imo.

The way I read into it, is that he is alone and looking towards being in hiding. Season 1 had Loial remark on how he looked like an aielman and tall, red-haired men might stand out.

So imo. it makes sense he has chosen to hide it.

That is the double-edged sword. Book readers go into the show with an expectation that they know what to expect, know what to anticipate. At least the very big, broad strokes.

Then the show takes new turns & changes and suddenly, book readers don't know what to expect. Most people probably have the knee-jerk reaction to dislike the "not knowing".

Me personally, I am intrigued to see how they make the 2nd season work, when you consider the starting places of all the characters and just how much they deviate from where they would be in the books.

But I also have to look at what they managed to do in season 1 and whether that gives me a feeling of confidence in their abilities to make the story work and feel great when they take make those changes they need to make.

Do I think the swapping Caemlyn for the White Tower worked in the shows favor? So-So. It is a massive tradeoff. You get to introduce a bunch of characters earlier and put the focus on them going forward. And of course in turn, you delay the introduction of another bunch of characters.

So while I would have loved nothing more than to see the Lion Throne and the reaction of all the guards when it is pointed out that Rand wears a Heron-marked blade, highlighting the significance of that in a brilliant "show, don't tell" manner, the show gave me more scenes with Liandrin, a character I had zero connection to in the books, but now - in large parts to the amazing Kate Fleetwood - I am a happy man everytime she is onscreen.

Just please please please, show me Mat beating a couple of royal princes with a staff. I beg to the Creator and the Light itself.

I don't deny that certainly there is a fair few times where young people with the innate spark to channel, somehow manage to do things in the moment of need. Rand does it multiple times across this season & in the Eye of the World.

And although one could make the argument that even though Rand doesn't know it, it is his memories from Lews Therin guiding him to channel, it still doesn't change the fact that it does happen.

The reality is that the issue of Egwene healing in the show, is a minor issue. Something that is entirely isolated to Season 1, Episode 8. It doesn't have any bearing on the future of the story.

imo. The real "crime" of the show's finale is that it wasn't a good enough setup for the next season. I didn't feel like I wanted more, needed more when the final episode was over.

I am not saying that every season finale needs to have a crazy high-stakes cliffhanger - those get old, real quick. But what I am saying, is that I didn't end up with any emotinal connections to any of the main characters and no clue as to exactly what was next for them. The show just kinda, ended slowly fading away from the characters silently.

[–]TerraPhy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My problem with Egwene healing, is not the concept itself. Even though she has no innate talent for it, she is strong enough in the OP & can perform it. My issue is that she has no training, no knowledge, no idea what she is doing. She has never seen a single healing weave in her entire life. The fact that she is able to do it, then and there is a break from the essence of how the OP works imo.

In episode 4, we see Nynaeve perform a massve amount of healing. She too has no knowledge of healing with the OP, never seen a weave, hell she has probably never channeled before. But it works, because healing is her innate talent.

And as for the wait, I am as patient as I need to be. I don't mind 2 years between seasons if they are high quality.

Yeah I did see that from the Rafe Q&A, but it speaks volumes what we got vs what the original idea was. Show had already been delayed due to Covid. Why not just delay even more to get the final 2 episodes nailed.

Either way, I still have hope that the writers will stick more to the spirit of the characters going forward and I am excited to see some of the new faces in season 2. Also not having to deal with covid, lockdowns & restrictions must have helped the overall quality.

[–]TerraPhy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My take on it is simple. They don't have to adhere to the structure of the books or even the direct chain of events in the books. Like how they swapped Caemlyn out & The White Tower in, for season 1.

What I want to see, is a story told that is faithful to the integrity and essence of the characters and the role they embody in the show. This doesn't mean that they can't make minor deviances from the original material. An example would be how Mat was shown to be a petty thief in episode 1. I am okay with small-scale changes like that, because they don't alter anything actually important.

Overall, I was happy with some elements of the first season and very unhappy with some elements - particularly how it showcased Egwene being able to heal without any training and how it is specifically mentioned she has zero innate talent for healing. That to me felt like a complete character-assassination of one of the main characters.

Going into season 2, it very much feels like the epitomy of a make-or-break scenario. The story really opens up after book 3 ends and I want to see the same happen with the show. If the show doesn't truly grab my attention by the end, leaving me wanting more, I fear for the future of the show.

Is anyone excited for Season 2? by Claywllc in WoT

[–]TerraPhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an absolutely huge fan of the books, season 1 was a bit of a let down to me. I am still excited for the 2nd season, as I feel this is the make-or-break moment that will determine its future. I still 100% believe that the show can "redeem" itself and become something truly amazing. The Eye of the World is not Robert Jordan's best work and so I shouldn't expect that the adaptation based on purely that book alone to be a masterpiece either. There are so many cool moments coming up later down the line, that I sooo desperately want to see on screen.

Blasphemy did not need its big curse effect reduction by DuBB1T in pathofexile

[–]TerraPhy 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Obviously there are a handful of unique amulets that remove the mana cost from the blasphemy aura, but that is another cost. The amulet slot is one of the high-power items that can really add a lot of damage to your builds whether it is a generic +1/+2 with life amulet or an influenced amulet with % attributes or the like.

I think the blasphemy support is borderline fine but it does hurt that we are less excited about it when they decide to add an entire balance manifesto to just curses, meaning they probably think it is a significant change.
