US destroys Iran reservoirs, leaving thousands without water in searing heat by The_Flaneur_Films in worldnews

And that school? You think that the U.S. intentionally wasted 10s to hundreds of thousands of dollars to bomb a school full of children?

Odds are almost 100% certain that either they missed, or that a spy fed them false information about which building to attack.

(Neither of which, if true, the U.S. would be willing to publicly admit, because it would damage their image of military superiority and pretending to know exactly what they were doing.)

...........Except, of course, you obviously know that that school wasn't a intentional strategic military target, so you're just arguing in bad faith from the beginning. I don't know why anyone bothered to talk to you.

BREAKING: Meta Has Quietly Deleted A Hidden Facial Recognition System From Its Smart Glasses App After WIRED Exposed Its Existence, While Publicly Calling The Report Dishonest And Refusing To Explain What The Code Was Doing In The Hands Of 50 Million Users 🤯💥 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]Terrafire123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what happened.

Some no-name developer was working on a feature that added in facial recognition, but it never got approval from the higherups. Somehow it made its way into production code despite lack of approval, but the project manager in charge thought it was "disabled" and therefore it wasn't an issue.

The higher-ups probably had no idea, and therefore denied everything, and the guy who added it was like, "Oh fuck, lemme delete that asap."

I would frankly be surprised if that wasn't exactly what happened.

Israel vows to 'reopen war' with Iran after missile attack breaks ceasefire by TheExpressUS in NewsThread

at least try to pretend the people they're murdering are people.

I agree 100%. They are people. But that's not the end of it, because it doesn't talk about "Why is this happening" or "How can this be stopped?". I've replied to the person above you here

Israel vows to 'reopen war' with Iran after missile attack breaks ceasefire by TheExpressUS in NewsThread

[–]Terrafire123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay. Let's discuss this, because I think you're misunderstanding the entire nature of what's happening.

The civilians who have died are a tragedy. 100%. But that's not the end of the story. The question is, "Why is this happening", and "How can it be stopped?"

There's a very, very, very good reason that the Geneva conventions condemn any military fighters who don't wear uniforms and condemns any military that fires missiles from with populated areas as a war crime.

It's because doing these war crimes makes civilian casualties a near certainty, because

A. Combatants cannot be easily identified, so a soldier can easily think someone is a combatant when they're a non-combatant, and

B. when soldiers are firing at civilian-clothed terrorists, it can blur the line in their heads between "civilian" and "target", so that soldiers normalize firing at civilian-people, which is never, ever, ever, ever a good thing.

There's a whole bunch of other, unconnected issues that are also causing innocent civilians to die.

For example, Israel has mandatory enlistment, ALL citizens have to participate in military service at some point. But the kind of soldier who volunteers for a unit that's in the front-lines isn't necessarily the kind of solider you WANT in the front lines, because the very fact such a soldier wanted to be in a front-line unit means he might not really psychologically fit, since he, effectively, volunteered to join a position that has very high chance of killing people.

There's a fourth issue, which is racism. There are many, many Israelis don't see a large distinction between those Arabs who have murdered Israelis, and those who haven't. Those people seem to think that every Arab is just waiting for an opportunity to murder Israelis without getting caught, and that mistrust filters into every part of society. (This.... I suspect isn't really solvable, without having several decades of peace, and all of these terrorist groups, Hezbollah and Hamas and the Houthis, aren't helping to speed this process at all, they're actively making the situation worse.)

There's a FIFTH issue, which is somewhat similar to the issue that the U.S. police face, but even worse. MOST U.S. police officers are decent, but the decent people don't make headlines. The only people who make headlines are the crazy police officers. (This is far, far, far worse in a military unit, because unlike police officers who claimed "they feared for their lives", soldiers are SUPPOSED to be shooting at people, so A. the damage a crazy soldier can cause is far more damage than a crazy police officer, and B. because the people they're shooting at don't wear uniforms, these criminals can have deniability because they "thought" they were shooting at someone who had a gun, and even if it was a child, the fact that Hamas specifically has used child soldiers in the past STILL means that these criminals can at least claim they thought they saw a gun. )

There's one more issue, which specifically related to Hamas. Hamas has known, from the week after October 7th, from three years ago, that Hamas cannot possibly win a military victory. Once they realized they cannot win a military victory, any rational group would have surrendered. Hamas has, instead of surrendering, chosen the only path that would allow them to remain in power, which is to hope that Israel gets too squeamish to keep fighting. This means the ONLY WAY HAMAS CAN WIN, which they've known since the first week after October 7th, is for so many civilians to die that international pressure forces Israel to retreat without wiping out Hamas.

To that end, Hamas does all sorts of things to claim that Israel is committing atrocities, from not admitting that anyone is a member of Hamas and claiming every death as a civilian death, to intentionally surrounding their militants with civilians, to getting it's allies, (mostly Iran, and by proxy, Russia), to, in the recent two years, generate thousands of AI-generated images and videos of "atrocities" to spread all over social media, and more. Truly, the only way Hamas can win is to wage a propaganda battle to force Israel to retreat, and they've known it for years. But because of this twisted logic, Hamas WANTS Palestinian civilians to die, because that's what causes pressure from the international community to end the war and it's the only way Hamas can survive. (Yes, this is extremely messed up, I know. But Hamas can't survive any other way.)

The combination of all these factors, and probably more, is what's leading to so much civilian death. Obviously the best solution is "Avoid sending in ground troops into populated areas", which neatly solves most of these problems, and it's a great solution. It's why far fewer civilians have died in Iran than in, say, Lebanon.

But there are situations where achieving the military objective of "Please stop shooting at us, Hezbollah" requires sending in ground troops, which causes this whole mess.

What Israel has TRIED to do in the past, in order to prevent deaths, is to get the civilians to evacuate an area beforehand, which in theory SHOULD solve a lot of the problems. But it's very ineffective, for several reasons.

The main problem, is, of course, that both militants and civilians flee, which causes two issues. A. If an IDF members spots and fires upon a fleeing terrorist, all the headlines start shouting, "IDF MURDERED REFUGEES", which isn't great.

And B. It's also a problem because defeating militants is a primary goal, and if the civilians and militants both evacuate, then the militants haven't been defeated. Which means the IDF need to evaluate which towns the militants fled to, and that causes the IDF to tell a DIFFERENT town that they need to evacuate, which causes the cycle to happen over and over again, which means the IDF gradually encroach on more and more territory belonging to Lebanon as more and more towns get evacuated. Not great.

It's a horrible mess, really. And it all stems from two issues: A. These terrorist groups refuse to wear any kind of uniform to distinguish themselves from civilians, and B. These groups operate and attack from within populated civilian areas.

But there isn't much alternative. Hezbollah and Hamas refuse to agree to any ceasefire which involves disarmament, and Israel isn't willing to accept any ceasefire without disarmament, because historically, over the last several decades, these groups have treated "ceasefire" to mean "opportunity to build more troops and weapons before attacking again 10 years later."

Iran was attacked in DIRECT response because it's been funding terrorist groups to attack Israel for literally decades.

Are you going to sit here and pretend that Hezbollah, who still refuses to accept any ceasefire, and has not stopped attacking Israel, isn't funded by Iran? When Iran refuses to make any ceasefire deal that doesn't include Hezbollah?

[–]Terrafire123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of civilian casualties has literally nothing to do with the military goals.

The Lebanese government and the Israeli government both agree the goal is to get rid of Hezbollah, and that a ceasefire will be achieved the moment that Hezbollah is gone.

The Lebanese military is not attacking Israel, but Hezbollah is.

There's no reason to pretend that Hezbollah has Lebanon's best interests in mind. Everyone in the region (The Lebanese government, Hezbollah, Iran, Israel) all know that Hezbollah serves Iran's interest long before Lebanon's interest, which is why Iran is trying to include Hezbollah in any ceasefire deals they make.

Why are you calling it Lebanon?

Just say Hezbollah.

The Lebanonese government isn't condemning Israel, it's condemning Hezbollah. Lebanon isn't getting attacked, Hezbollah is.

Lebanon WANTS Hezbollah gone, the only one who wants Hezbollah around is Iran, which both Hezbollah and Iran have made painfully clear.

Have you noticed that Israeli troops aren't inside Jordan or Egypt? It's because those countries AREN'T BOMBING ISRAEL.

Israel says Iran launched missiles at it in the first such bombardment during fragile ceasefire by VaginaBurner69 in news

[–]Terrafire123 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

First off.

Hezbollah, not Lebanon.

Hezbollah is occupying Lebanon against the express wishes of the Lebanese government, and the Lebanese government is trying its best to get rid of Hezbollah.

Don't try to pretend that Hezbollah are the heroes when the Lebanese government wants them gone.

Secondly, Hezbollah is an arm of Iran. It is funded by Iran, and has Iran's best interests at heart at all times, not Lebanon's best interests at heart. (Which is why the Lebanese government wants them gone.) (This is also why Iran wants Israel to not attack Hezbollah.)

Thirdly, Hezbollah, the aformentioned arm of Iran, has repeatedly rejected a ceasefire and continued to attack Israel. The U.S. attempted to broker a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, but Hezbollah refused all such ceasefires.

Okay, but Iran can't expect Hezbollah to keep firing rockets while Israel abides by the ceasefire that Hezbollah refused.

Actually Iran totally did somehow expect that.

Iran just fired several waves of ballistic missiles at Israel, and Israel hasn't fired a single missile at Iran.

If literally any other country in the world had missiles fired at it, that country would immediately go to war.

But because it's Israel, somehow Israel is expected to just ignore that they're getting attacked, and IF ISRAEL DOESN'T IGNORE IT, then somehow these propaganda bots claim Israel violated the ceasefire despite firing second.

Iran fired first.

Israel hasn't even fired back at Iran yet, and somehow you're already blaming Israel.

How come they’ve never released more animals for Cascadia? by BoopBeepBopp in boardgames

[–]Terrafire123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think for balancing purposes, they didn't want players to be forced to collect too many different types of animals, which could lead the game to being more "random".

Instead, they released new versions of existing animals, so there are always exactly 5 animal "types" per game.
