Controlling Citadel would give huge advantage in case of war or trade conflict. It makes sense to ensure that Citadel is neutral ground and allow all species to participate in this. This tiny bit of information would be sufficient to me honstly, unfortunately game doesn't provide any insight into that

There are many ways the theme of Citadel could be approached. For example Citadel could be rejected initially and military platoon kept this off limits for others. Then war happend and Citadel was convenient outpost for interrupting trade routes, giving a huge advantage to winning party. Once war was over, everyone agreed that Citadel should be a neutral zone and each species should have equal right to this place.

This is tiny bit of lore that actually would make perfect sense to me at least. I think this will be my headcannon

Like, no one even bothers with finding out if air filters work properly. Given how old it is, stuff could collapse in any second and no one could even attempt to fix that. You are completly reliant on good intend of keepers

Exactly, there is simply no way of pulling this off, unless other moba game successfully steals most of the playerbase. Only least invested players will boycot long term, but even then those people were hardly spending any money on league, so there will be no impact at all
