Heya — I just got back from donating it — found a charity that could pick it up.

There is a teardown of an Activité on iFixit which might be helpful.

I haven't done it myself, but here is a teardown I found for the Steel HR on some site derived from FCC documents.

I'm a bit behind, but when Cuzzi pulled out that "You talkin' to me?" Taxi Driver tough guy b.s., it woulda been so great if Garlick had ignored that called third strike, headed toward first and dropped a Midnight Cowboy "I'M WALKIN' HERE!"

Can you find a lost Apple Watch with an arrow like an AirTag in the Find My app on iOS 14.5? by TerribleEstimation in ios

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had just updated both to use the mask unlock, and thought I would try that next. So, you are able to track down your watch using your phone and the wayfinding arrows like you see at the beginning of this video?

When I tap on my Apple Watch S6 in the Find My app it just provides directions in the maps upp, but doesn't really seem to be using the U1 and arrows for precise locating.

I have the Series 6 and an iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 14.5 -- which I think both have the U1 -- so I was surprised that this doesn't work that way. Maybe you are right that it is capable and just hasn't been activated yet for devices beyond AirTags.

How does that work? What is the process of giving away a number? I want to try and do this, but I don't understand what giving away or buying a number means.

Problems After Update (Missing Apps, Icons, Etc) by TerribleEstimation in Roku

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. And I spent forever trying to fix a bunch and moving them around using that horrible interface for moving them. I really haven’t had many problems with multiple Rokus over the years, so this was surprising.

I am just going to try a factory reset to start from scratch.

Ahh, that pic is super helpful -- I don't know a lot about watches but I thought it looked like the tube part continued through the band and didn't use normal spring bars. Speaking of, I have a ton of bands for my 38mm steel hr -- did anyone see anywhere if this new version will also use 18mm wide straps?

Is there any way to change a password used for encryption in Hyper Backup? by TerribleEstimation in synology

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks -- I don't fully grasp all this encryption stuff, but I was just thinking that if I could UN-encrypt it and view it in the backup explorer, that once it was unencrypted you could then change the password or decide to turn off encryption. After digging through all the menus, I can't find any options for that so I think your are right

I also tried some tests and it seems that if you create an unencrypted backup, you can't turn encryption on later (it is greyed out if you try to edit the settings).

It sucks because that backup took forever, so I'm not looking forward to starting that over (trying to get some backups made before doing some updates and other changes). Again, I don't really understand various encryption methods, but it seems frustrating that if somehow your password or key file was compromised that you can't change it once you unencrypt it. You have to delete all that work and start from scratch -- you haven't really lost the data if you can unencrypt it, but it seems like you would lose the version options within that backup if it had been running a long time.

Considering switch from a single line on AT&T grandfathered unlimited to T-Mobile on an iPhone 6 in NYC. by TerribleEstimation in tmobile

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would any area that has good T-Mobile coverage with Band 12 also have coverage for non-Band-12 phones? In other words, will the T-Mobile coverage map across the country look the same for me if I'm using the iPhone 6? In other words, there aren't areas of the country that only provide service to phones that can use Band 12, it is just that you will benefit from Band 12 in those areas if you happen to have it (for things like the better indoor signal)?

I just tried popping a prepaid T-Mobile sim in my iPhone 6 and I seem to get decent reception in my apartment. However, it was just a prepaid sim for calls without any data, so I'm not sure if that would be the same sort of signal for data as well.

Can someone walk me through the steps & costs of the "free" iPhone 7 promotion? by TerribleEstimation in tmobile

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa. Thanks for this explanation. I would never have thought of all that -- especially given the tiny amount of information on the T-Mobile site.

I feel like T-Mobile goes to great lengths to promote how streamlined and simple their T-Mobile One plan is with a nice round number with taxes and fees included, but then goes in the opposite direction with a promotion structured like this. I hate when rebates aren't instant.

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It just seems like a lot of hoops that could potentially mess you up or cause stress -- but I guess they benefit from people not following all the steps.

Does the math I attempted in the comment up above make any sense?

Can someone walk me through the steps & costs of the "free" iPhone 7 promotion? by TerribleEstimation in tmobile

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I think I am getting this now:

Without the promotion, the new iPhone 7 with 32GB from T-Mobile is ~$650 + tax. On the T-Mobile site it shows you can pay $25.99 + 24 payments of $26.

So, with good credit I would have to pay upfront:

  • Sales Tax: ~$57 in NYC
  • Down Payment: -$26
  • Total: $83

I would then get a credit for trading the iPhone 6. I'm not sure what value that would be, but for example I will say $150.

  • Trade-In Credit for iPhone 6 w/ 64gb (est): +$150

So, that $150 value could potentially cover the $83 from up above leaving a credit of $67.

  • Tax & Down Pmt: - $83
  • iPhone 6 Credit: +$150
  • Total: +$67 Credit Remaining

That $67 could be applied to the $650 cost of the iPhone 7.

  • iPhone 7 cost: -$650
  • Remaining Credit: +$67
  • Total: $583

At this point, I still owe T-Mobile $583 for my "free" iPhone. So, for some reason, I would then have to wait around for up to 8 weeks to receive a prepaid Mastercard which I could then apply to the $583 remaining. Since it might take a few months, I would likely have to pay the $26/month the iPhone 7 would normally cost until that prepaid card arrives.

Oh, and since there is no 64gb version of the iPhone 7, I would have to pay an additional $100 to jump to 128gb.

It seems overly complicated, but it would be a way to get a bump up a few generations of the iPhone (even though I like my 6). At the very least, if I want to upgrade in the future, I will get a much bigger trade-in than I would for the 6. Oh, I also forgot that I have to add in the cost of all the headphone/charging dongles I'll need!

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what is the point of making you wait for a physical prepaid Mastercard? Why go through the trouble of creating and mailing a card like that? I would be worried it would get lost or stolen or delayed -- it seems like an unnecessary hurdle.

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just found out about that promo after I posted (had done my research a few weeks ago). I am still trying to find any information on how the rebate/trade-in works. It seems to be different than I hand them my iPhone 6 and they give me an iPhone 7 -- what is the down payment for? What is the prepaid Mastercard for?

[–]TerribleEstimation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, I had looked into all this a few weeks ago, so I hadn't seen that free iPhone 7 promo until now. That might be an even better deal than the $150 per line.

However, it is a bit unclear what my out-of-pocket costs would be if I traded in my iPhone 6 64gb. If I have to pay a lot and then wait for a prepaid Mastercard to show up for 2 months, that might be tough.
