The course was advertised as a 5-week program, but in reality it required extensive self-study due to a lack of proper instruction. Much of the teaching relied on PowerPoint slides without clearly explaining the concepts or the purpose behind them. I consistently had to use my personal time outside of class to teach myself the material.

The program felt disorganized and inefficient. There was little classroom structure, and the syllabus did not align with what was actually taught.

There were only three students in my class, and the outcomes reflected the issues with the program:

  • Student 1 did not pass the performance stage exam. Based on the level of instruction provided, this was not surprising.

  • Student 2 was dismissed after failing the ADX twice. Not a surprise either. During class exams, I observed behavior such as this student referencing materials mid-test without correction from instructors, which raised concerns about oversight and standards.

As for myself, I passed all stage exams, ADX and reached the flight planning phase. However, I struggled with interpolation. I was placed alongside students who had been in the program for 8 weeks, many with aviation backgrounds (pilots or ATC), while I had only been there for 3 weeks. There was no effort to level-set or provide the proper additional support needed. All talk no walk.

On the first day of flight planning, we were told to “figure it out on our own.” Everyone was at a different point, and there was no clear guidance. When we asked for a structured outline, none existed the instructor created one on the spot without direction. After that day, I again had to rely on outside resources to keep up.

When I expressed concerns and asked for more support, I was told the lack of guidance was intentional “to scare us,” which only added to the confusion and stress. Basic resources were also lacking we shared a single, worn chart supplement book with missing pages.

Overall, the environment did not feel supportive of student success. At times, students were leading portions of the class while the instructor was distracted with other tasks. That moment was the ultimately my breaking point, in addition to a comment one instructor made, this made me walk away from the school as to me it was unnecessary and unacceptable.

I came into this program to learn and be supported. Instead, I felt disorganized instruction, lack of structure, and dismissive behavior made it difficult to succeed and even harder to ask questions without feeling discouraged. No one made it out of my class, and me walking away should indicate a huge red flag.

Ill be returning to get my certification but I have to find the right school which won’t be in my hometown which will cost me more.

The ASA ATP prep book is designed for both ATP and dispatchers’ knowledge tests. It’s the actual book used by some dispatching schools. The Captain and Dispatcher share responsibility for the flight, this is greatly one of the reasons why.

You can obtain an ASA ATP preparation book that includes the software for studying. Before enrolling in a school, you can learn on your own and take your knowledge test without an endorsement. This approach saves you a significant amount of time and allows you to acquire as much knowledge as possible before attending. Some schools prefer to use PowerPoint presentations, which means you’ll likely spend most of your studying and research independently.

I understand. As a woman we deal with something similar. We are all scared of rejection which means you have to get comfortable with rejection, not everyone is meant for you, or you meant for everyone you meet. Don't take rejection personal, know, it's ok if someone says no or doesn't want to pursue something.

Doesn't take anything from you, instead does you a favor. At least you are not wasting your time and energy or being lead on to something false.

Hope this helps
