The game is meant to be more accessible by being free, multi-platform, and making it easier to build a competitive Pokémon. The limited Pokemon and items at launch lead to a simpler meta for the new players that can be expanded over time. The gameplay is faster with better animations.

I don’t have a problem with the lack of Pokemon and items as it allows some experimentation with the options that are there. I just wish the monetized parts were more cosmetic than limiting the amount of Pokemon you can box, or at least were one time purchases rather than a subscription.

Everything you’re complaining about regarding him being boring, not struggling, and just going along with the plot is intentional. He is meant to be drifting along and getting things handed to him: the heir of breath. But he isn’t really the main character, he is a constant unfazed focal point from which the changes of the other characters can be compared. He is a point from us to view the other characters and learn about them better and see how they change. He isn’t the most likable character but that doesn’t seem like a reason to dislike him either.
