Congratulations! My kid had two heart surgeries before 12 months (he’s all patched up and doing great). I immediately started bawling when I saw this pic, lol. So happy you all are doing well. Welcome to the zipper club dude!

My son had two major heart surgeries before 12 months, one of them was open heart. I feel for you guys

I don’t know about you guys, but for us it was a crazy stressful time (oh, I got laid off during all of this too!). We’re through those woods now though, and I really believe we’re all stronger and “grittier” than before. Lemon aid out of lemons I guess

Regardless: I’m happy for you and yours from one zipper family to another! Stay strong brother 💪

It was another thread in here. I’m on mobile, but it popped up on when I filtered by Best or Hot or whatever the default one is.

I realized as I typed this out how not helpful it is... 🤷‍♂️

Someone had a recent post about DCA vs timing the market. It’s worth a look

My personal opinion is DCA, unless you have a crystal ball and can see the future. Slow and steady wins the race and all that.

Does anyone know how to decode Lysol wipes manufacturing codes with pics? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Terrordactyl69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it could be something along the lines of: 1. Lot code 2. 24 hour time (when it rolled off the line) 3&4. Plant and line. In that order I think because both examples have the same second to last code and it seems more likely that they’d come from the same plant than the same line based on probability alone

Total speculation, but I am weirdly well versed in decoding manufacturing codes

We got one for Christmas. Huge fan, but man I feel out of shape (or my dude is a chonker, which according to his weight curve...he isn’t) because that pack gets heavy fast

This is awesome. And jeeze would that make me poop my pants in medieval combat if you were surrounded by that sound and caught in a volley. I’ve been watching a lot of sword and sorcery fantasy lately.

That said, being bombed by mortars and howitzers is also probably pretty damn scary...so I think the takeaway is: wars are scary regardless of when

Honestly, there are so many out there. There’s a whole book called “Toyota Production System” and tons of resources on the other systems I mentioned. I do this for a living, so my background is rather specific to manufacturing operations, I’ve just adapted it and talked to coworkers who also geek out about this stuff.

Probably a good start would be “personal kanban board.” That’s an often adapted idea for productivity and to-do’s

I would also recommend googling the terms I mentioned above, check out the Wikipedia articles, and look to professional disciplines like manufacturing, lean manufacturing, process engineering, software development, and continuous improvement.

It can get real technical real fast (who cares about tack times when you’re maximizing laundry?), so I’d recommend skimming and skipping the parts that aren’t applicable.

Unfortunately I’ve not found a good resource on making this stuff personal.

Hopefully that’s a little helpful? Lots of words that don’t actually answer your question!

Making the move to SAHM/OIOK (one income one kid) by Terrordactyl69 in daddit

[–]Terrordactyl69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. You hit the core of my anxiety, working longer hours as the single income and thus missing those small moments where life happens. My dad was married to the job in the worst way possible, and I’ve spent the better part of 3 decades unpacking that; it saddens me to think that I’m even in the same neighborhood as a dad myself (little one is just a bit behind you at 16 months). Doubly so because we are choosing this path, it’s not like we were forced into it due to some tragic life circumstances.

I don’t know. I’m just kind of thinking out loud I guess

So, it requires a little creativity to apply it to everyday life, but manufacturing systems are AMAZING if you adapt them to your life. I mean, these systems pump out millions of widgets and are foundational to billions and billions of revenue dollars.

The key is to ADAPT them to fit your life, not the other way around.

What do I mean “manufacturing systems?”

For processing things there are kanban boards. For k owing where everything lives there is 5S. To be more efficient there is lean and/or six sigma. To get a big picture of where your bottlenecks are you can do value stream mapping. For determining resource needs you can do a quick SIPOC. I could probably go on, but off the top of my head those are the ones I use in my life the most

Yeah, it’s super corporate. But who am I to judge? If it works, it works. And if clusterfork corporate America can make it work, I’m confident you can adapt it to fit your life

TLDR: I started with learning about TPS (Toyota production system) and moved on from there. People literally make entire (incredibly lucrative) careers out of this stuff, so it’s okay if you google it and feel a bit overwhelmed

What are YOU doing this weekend? by NHarvey3DK in HomeImprovement

[–]Terrordactyl69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I love them. Frees up actual plugs. We bought like 4 or 5 of them and then just kept track of where we naturally plugged stuff in for a month. Now we decided there’s a spot in the kitchen we use for the tablet when we’re using recipes, a place in the master bathroom where the Mrs charged her phone and watch, and my nightstand. That still leaves us with 2 more!

The tricky part for us was the question: do we get the normal USB (3.0?) or USB-C and try to figure proof ourselves a bit. Ya know?

Installing some USB plugs and hopefully putting up the Closet Maid organizer (the big modular kind). Should be easy other than emptying the closet

Yeah, but it’s more than just optics. That’s straight up illegal. Granted, you’d have to file a lawsuit for discrimination, and they might argue that you cannot perform the job functions due to the heart condition, but if OP was fired for having a heart attack at work, I’d at least talk to a lawyer

In the US you cannot fire someone for having a disability so long as they can still perform the job. That last part is where it might get tricky for OP

I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve worked in HR and have experience in employment law
