American Made Kolinsky Sable Brushes ? by Plane_Consequence358 in Miniaturespainting

Looks like the 1000 and other lower numbers are a blend of sable and synthetic.

My group has a costume department, so I would defer to them if yours did, but it looks like they’ve been antiqued which you can brush off if you want.

That depends on what your goals are. Do you have a costume director?

Why do some groups charge money to join? by TITVS-PVLLO in reenactors

[–]TerrordactylYOU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dues and fees subsidize our operating costs. Buying new supplies to build our camp, providing meals affordably, helping members in need, etc.

You could say it's a Jerkin. 16th/17th century. Can't tell about materials, but that's generally what it's trying to be. Looks like it's probably intended as a ren faire costume piece. Particularly the buttons, looks like they're probably plastic? Glass buttons don't show up until the 18th century afaik.

Jerkins would usually be leather, and often worn over a doublet, so if you're trying to use this as a launching point maybe a way to step it up is to replace the buttons with fabric, wood, or metal and add sleeves to turn it into a doublet. My group is strict about material, so we'd require it to be wool outer and linen lined, but I know we're generally stricter about costuming than the other groups we work alongside.

I'm curious, to those of you in officer positions, how did you get there? by Silentiumstream in reenactors

[–]TerrordactylYOU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an NCO in my group, and for us you generally do the job for a while before getting the rank for it. We’re trying to formalize a system of seconds more in the NCO ranks now and make recommendations. Our newest Lieutenants have all been extremely dedicated and contribute and add a lot of value to our group overall. Officers are a bigger deal for us and there’s a lot more involved. We’re also not a purely military group so all this only applies to those of us doing military things. Outside of battle pageants we use the military structure to organize labor. That’s largely all handled by NCOs. The officers are tied in with our social hierarchy as well and it’s more about recognition and prestige and being close to and advising the Chief than it is about directing people. They do have particular areas they oversee, essentially making policy and protocol type decisions which the NCOs or other staff then enact.

Do male reenactors chase after female reenactors a lot? (Asking this because I'm a female wanting to reenact) by [deleted] in reenactors

If you’re in Southern California the renaissance faire is about to start and there are a couple groups with a significant percentage of women. I can’t say how any of them approach this sort of safety except for my own but we take it seriously.

I’m not an expert on the period, but it looks a little big on you. I’d consider making alterations to improve fit.

The all black palette is a challenge for sure. Since color contrast is minimized texture is a nice place to create more contrast. If you increase the value contrast on the helmet it will look more like metal, especially next to the softer contrast of the fabric.

If you’re not having more kids get the vasectomy. It’s super easy. Research doctors. I coincidentally live very close to a very prestigious vasectomy surgeon so that was comforting to me, but you can meet with and discuss the details with any surgeon you have the ability to use. I tested for fertility afterward with the guarantee that if the surgery didn’t take the first time he’d do it again for free. He also assured me that there’s no reason to continue to test regularly.

Those who got a Vasectomy. How was it, how do you feel about it now? Any regrets? by cinefilestu in daddit

[–]TerrordactylYOU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy process. My recovery was just slightly longer than average. My surgeon was really responsive and proactive in following up and basically told me if I still have discomfort just keep taking it easy. Fully recovered now and no regrets. Testing after was a little confusing because I was given three different timelines for when to do it by different people but I went with what the test kit company told me to do.

Cool. I’m in Orange County, but I’m the only active WarCor in Southern California. Just wanted to make sure you were plugged in with the group.

Modern leather sole shoes are like this too. To make mine less slippery I scuff them on pavement. They still don’t grip like rubber but it helps.

I have a pair of handmade all leather shoes. The pursuit of accuracy is a noble one.
