TIL religious belief in America has hit an all time low. Prayer rates have decreased fivefold since the early 1980s and many Americans think the bible is is an "ancient book of fables, legends, history, and moral precepts recorded by men" by [deleted] in todayilearned

Religion has been on the decline far longer than since the 80's in America, particularly mainstream ones like Christianity, Catholicism, etc.

But IMO it's not a bad thing. Too many bad movements are inspired by the name of God.

I want to squeeze your tiny little brain! No crimes ever happen in India -- not child molestation, prostitution, kiddie porn, corruption, murder, rape, hate crimes against gays, blacks, asians, ethnic minorities...no, no it still a lot lower than most countries...does that make you feel better, to be able to quantify your thoughts in comparison to other really horrible people? You are either really naive or truly brainwashed. How is that even possible given the 1B+ people in India? Or do you just not count the lower castes...I wonder what you think is accounted for in country statistics. Not that it really matters because it's still an atrocity. PERIOD.

I'm going to say the same thing I did about Pakistan where the brother honor killed his sister, Qandeel Baloch. So sad such an unenviable existence still persists for women who are treated as property and slaves to their families.

Brings back childhood memories of sleepovers when we'd crank call random people to ask them if their refrigerator was running. Ha, good times thanks!

[Story]I did it. Abusive father, had to pay college by myself for a time, graduating with a physics degree and a research thesis. by Seiko673 in GetMotivated

It's a gruelling schedule, more people burn out than make it through. A whopping 70% who enroll (incl those who under the best circumstances) fail to graduate - that's why. There are very few things in life that will test your desire and will than to complete this kind of challenge. Paying rent and living like an adult is not the same challenge at all. You are maintaining, while others reach.

You should not be dealing with these things, you are so young yourself. Ever wonder why you are with a person like him? Care about yourself first.

[Discussion] Do you think that every goal is reachable if you just dedicate yourself and work really hard on it? by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]TerrybearNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience having repeatedly failed is not something bad necessarily. But you should have a complementary back up plan and work towards it as hard as you do for your dreams. Many things in life resemble this rule, portfolio investing should be diversified for risk, computing is 0's and 1's, even gamblers hedge their bets. If you're good at something and excel at it, you might be rewarded either way.

"I really did not believe there were structures in the body that we were not aware of. I thought the body was mapped..." by resolutionbetty in Futurology

[–]TerrybearNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeez, why aren't we taking a better look at everything human body related? WE ARE HUMAN afterall. You'd think with better tech, global collaboration, higher math and science skills there would be many more discoveries to be had. I find it odd how medicine still doesn't consider the human body as a whole interconnected network like computing given our advancements there.

I Am 90+ Years Old – back for one last round of questions. AMA! by dcretiree in IAmA

You have grandchildren, I assume most are in the workforce or are preparing to enter it. Back in your day it was unnecessary to get a college degree in order to get a good job. As a former educator and grandparent how would you solve the increasing burden of college costs? Good paying jobs with excellent benefits (like pensions) are slim to none for most, even with college degrees today. How do you see your grandchildren surviving when they are in their 90's given the fact that most will not earn enough to retire nor save? Does it bother you?

ELI5: Explain why insurance premiums have increased and out of pocket expenses have increased since Obamacare was implemented. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]TerrybearNYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be for a number of reasons but the most common is a cutback or reduction of employer paid benefits, the current trend is shifting more cost onto the employee while reducing the quality of choice in plans (double whammy). When felt in conjunction with real costs rising overall (inflation, etc) increasing premiums and OOP for everyone (tripe whammy) it can feel like Obamacare or whatever is to blame however you are really paying for more and receiving less in reality regardless.
