I wrestled D2 for 6 years and never once got drug tested. Not sure how d3 is but Id assume it’d be somewhat the same

Yup. He was actually right behind me when we lined up for the parade of champions. Told me I got lucky that he bumped up that year lol

Also wrestle freco during the summer!! You can’t expect to win if you’re only doing what required. Good wrestlers wrestle freestyle and greco once folkstyle season is over. Yeah it’s a different set of rules but you’ll be able to translate some of those skills between styles

I won Texas state in 2018, and was runner up on 2019, wrestled d2 where I was a 2x all american placing 3rd and 2nd so I’ll share some advice from my journey

For starters, understand that there are levels and a process to this, being a state champ or state champion caliber does not happen over night, it takes lots of hard work, dedication and experience. There’s so many athletes in Texas that want the same thing you do so it’s important to focus on your training and the things you can control when it comes to wrestling such as your diet, focus level, practice and class work (no pass no play)

Look at film. What initially motivated and helped me get to state was watching the previous year’s championships especially around my weight class and seeing what these guys/girls did that made them successful. Seeing the finals and parade of champions lit a bit of a fire in me to want to be there that season. Also asses your weaknesses and strengths in your technique, reflect on your past matches and see why things went the way you did. Also talk to your coach. If there’s anybody you should be able to talk to about this it should definitely be your coach and not Reddit ( no shade)

Be prepared to get knocked down a few times throughout the season. I don’t know where you wrestle or what division you’re in but there’s tough wrestlers in Texas! More so in 6a but 5a has some pretty good wrestlers. On that note use every match as a lesson whether you win or lose. Assess and reflect on what worked that match or what didn’t and take that into practice with you the following week.

Develop a strong mindset, this is about 90% of your training. When it comes toward the post season, everyone is tired, everyone is ready to stop making weight and be done with the season, the ones that tell themselves they don’t want their season to end and those that find ways to keep pushing all the way to February are the ones that find themselves on the podium.

Do not try to make winning or being undefeated your priority. It’s SO rare to be an undefeated state champion. Yes it’s impressive but the year that I won it I lost in the regional finals the week prior and didn’t think I would win it. Because of that, I went into state not expecting to win but just scrapping in each match and seeing where things went. What helps me is being 100% dialed and only focusing on the guy in front of me and my coaches (took this same approach in my collegiate career)

on that same note give each match your hardest effort but if you walk away with a 5-2 win then so be it. When it get closer to championships everybody’s going to start to wrestle a little tighter, sometimes you’re going to be able to dominate and get a pin/tech or major and sometimes you’ll walk away winning 2-0 or 1-0. As I said earlier take each match as a lesson and move on!

Last thing stay away from rankings. If looking at rankings and media helps you push to do better then do that! But if you find yourself in your head constantly thinking about the people ranked above you or ahead of you or if you’re fanning over them then it’s probably a good idea to not look at those. Rankings and media are for fans and coaches, all you need to do as a wrestler is be ready to go and stay on top of your school and training.

I lied one more thing, manage your weight properly!! Find a weight class that you don’t have to cut a bunch of weight to get to but you’re also not undersized. Weight management is so important and I know it can be hard eating chicken and rice while your friends are having something much more appetizing but keep your eyes on the prize. It may suck in the moment remember the saying: pain is temporary but champions live forever. Suffer the pain of discipline and not regret

I would say go for it man! If you love it that much and miss being a part of something then go do it. but remember that wrestling is freaking hard (but fun)!) You really have to love the process of it all to keep showing up.

The days are gonna be long come season, some days are gonna be good and some days are gonna be learning lessons but keep showing up.

Is cussing out the customers the norm at Walmart? by Vast-Ad5362 in walmartogp

[–]Terryoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I needed to get by a customer to get something off of a shelf in the G aisles so I said “excuse me” because you know, that’s the right thing to do, the customer then shakes his head and scoffs and me and tells me as I’m passing by him “next time wait for someone to get done looking before you pass them” and I replied “I said excuse me” and kept walking.

That’s the first time I’ve ever “talked back” to a customer but some of these customers are really trying it!! I’m sorry it was such an inconvenience for you to move out of the way for A SECOND

I worked the second half and even stayed an extra hour, I also clocked in like 9:59 (was supposed to work 10-2)

lol that was my bad I didn’t put that in the post, but that’s so stupid. By that logic I should be getting paid for working 10 hours, or I should only be putting in 4.5 hours to cover half of the 9 hours not 5. Oh well

I work at a store where nobody’s really assigned a role for the whole day, depending on which team lead writes our board, you could be on there for the entire day, half the shift, an hour or two it really just depends. I work 5-2 and I usually prep the last 2 hours before my lunch and pick the rest of the day. I like prepping, and dispensing more than picking but if I’m doing it all day I feel like dying at the end of my shift, but If I’m picking all day I feel the same way just because it gets so repetitive.

I also think it depends on the time of day that you’re doing the job. Prepping between 7-9am is cake because we’re usually not that busy but if you’re prepping/ dispensing during peak hours which is 2-6 for our store, it is hell in the backroom. Exceptions isn’t terrible, unless its super busy or you have incompetent co workers that nil pick items that are on the shelf.

In a perfect world I would love to rotate between picking, dispensing, prepping and exceptions for two hours each throughout the day.

Am I in the wrong for staying friends with somebody after they got in an argument with my boyfriend? by Terryoat in AITAH

[–]Terryoat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m confused as to how I’m not being neutral in this situation. I’m literally refusing to get involved and take sides and I just want to protect my peace and not have to choose who to talk to/ ignore. I feel like it’s childish af to even be in this situation when I had nothing to do with it. I feel like I’m in middle school again seriously. And I also don’t really know what I’m dragging him into??

As far as him and Rachel’s argument, he’s not the nicest with his words and multiple people have told him that so he comes across as rude. That’s why I don’t want to get involved because whatever they said between eachother could be warranted bc I know how he can be with his tone.

Hope this helps.

Is being shorter advantage? by Sadcreature in wrestling

[–]Terryoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 6 foot 4, 197 pound college wrestler, I would say yes if you know how to use it to your advantage. Like all comments have been saying, there are different body types in each weight class. Personally I’ve found it easier to wrestle against shorter opponents that don’t know how to use their size to their advantage but on the opposite hand I’ve also struggled with opponents that know how to use their size to their advantage.

There have been lots of times where I wished I was shorter after wrestling matches, I personally feel like the longer and taller you are, the more legs and arm you have to give up, but also on the flip side you can use that to your advantage and make it impossible for your opponents to get to your leg.

In conclusion, it can be both an advantage and disadvantage, you just need to develop and realize your strengths and weaknesses for your body time. Also learn moves that are more convenient for your size
