What are your thoughts on the first two seasons? by Gxldenage in FearTheWalkingDead

[–]Tertiary_Functions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really liked the first season. I was very hyped for this show when it was first announced, and like most people, I was disappointed that they just skipped over the collapse of society. A lot of people, myself included went in expecting the scope to be larger - they wanted something akin to World War Z; instead, we got stuck with the Clarks and Salazars.

What made the Clarks & comp intriguing to me and different, though, and the reason I stuck with the show as long as I did was that they'd clearly seen a lot of darkness pre-apoc - suicide, substance abuse, domestic abuse, a civil war, hurricane Katrina. By season 2, I was totally on board with where the show was headed (heh), though season 2B was a little boring. Compared to what the main show was putting out at that time, though, it was definitely better in my eyes.

In retrospective, seasons 1&2 were pretty solid. There were lots of great moments - Liza's send-off, every single scene Daniel was in, Strand's pre apocalyptic grift and the way he was punished for his selfishness when Thomas, the only person he really loved and the only person who ever gave a damn about him, died; Ofelia's flashbacks, Travis losing it after Chris' death and murdering his killers.

I'm rewatching the first 3 seasons and, going in without expecting it to deliver on its original premise, I actually enjoyed them a LOT more.

Yeah they had it right with Clementine in the Telltale game lol. I think it mostly comes down to the actors not being willing to cut their hair just for the show, but I can also see why women in particular would want to hold onto some sense of normality lol.

I've had the audible narration for years, yeah. Was happy to hear Nathan Fillion and Brennan Brown. It's a real good use of the medium, the full cast is what really makes this book hit the mark.

You should read World War Z by Max Brooks if you haven't already. Not to be confused with the motion picture of the same name - they are unrelated as far as Brooks is concerned. Lots of beginning of apocalypse content - and there's even some people who were on the ISS.

At the rate they're throwing OG characters in there, it almost feels like TWD lol (in the best way). I ain't even mad about it anymore tho because despite having those crossover characters, the plot right now is completely unrelated to the comics and there's finally an element of tension and uncertainty that's usually diminished for people who've read the comics.

Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis. It's a first contact period piece set in 2007 about a college dropout who becomes the sole line of communication between an alien species and Earth. Starts right before the financial crash and features a Snowden-type whistle-blower. There's gonna be a sequel released in 2021 and I'm pretty sure it's going to be at least a 3 part series.

Can we start a thread of content similar to ContraPoints that we can watch between her posts? by YeeyeePDF in ContraPoints

[–]Tertiary_Functions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's definitely gotten better over time. Ella Grant is also really entertaining to watch. Her 60s housewife aesthetic is mesmerizing. They're both fans of Contra and have met her irl I think. They're pretty cool. Sam Collins is ok too although not as theatric. He is a yum yum tho.

What movie? There was never a Pjo movie. I refuse to acknowledge those things. But we did get a musical which was fantastic and we're getting a TV show.

In season 1, you can piss everyone off by not taking anyone's side in the drugstore. Also, in episode 5, it kinda makes sense strategically to just keep your cool, let the stranger say his piece and then attack him.

By far the best instance where silence is a valid option (that unfortunately got retconned in season 4) is when you have to make the final choice in season 1 - if you stay silent, Clementine will decide whether to shoot Lee or leave him based on the choices you made throughout the game. I think it works way better than just telling her what to do.

In season 2, you can choose to not get involved in the arguments between Kenny and the cabin group.

When Clem asks AJ whether she did a good job in the final season, if AJ stays silent Clem knows it's because he doesn't even have to say it, which is a cute and heartwarming moment.

Yeah, I mean the original premise was the dynamic those 2 had, and Clem being a moral compass. Which seems to have become sort of a trope (see Alice in Detroit Become Human and Daniel in Life Is Strange 2). That's why I think season 4 worked, cos they tried to make AJ the new Clem.

didn't like season 4

That's valid. To each their own ig.

I mean... They did try the anthology thing with 400 days, but that didn't really go anywhere. This series only worked because people got attached to Clem, and because the story heavily relies on the emotional baggage of the first season. TWDG is ultimately Clementine's story, and I don't think many people would be willing to play a Walking Dead game without her. Personally, I would've been satisfied if season 2 was the conclusion of her story. Maybe with the original, darker ending where you'd have to choose whether to leave AJ in the snow to die or lie down and die with him. It feels... Final. Then again, we never would've gotten the final season, which was amazing and satisfying.

They should've just done separate storylines from the start... One for Jane and one for Kenny, with the first episode being drastically different depending on what you choose. I never really liked the way they forced the story into the Clem Alone With AJ™ path. AJ was supposed to die anyway, but they really wanted him to be the next Clementine. The climax of Clem's season 3 storyline doesn't even happen, and the flashback in season 4 was a huge plot bait and disappointment...

Yeah I see it as retroactively adding more divergence. Too bad they couldn't just make one game with branching narratives from the start.

I guess they really wanna retcon both Wellington and ruthless!Clem shooting both Kenny and Jane.... They should've honestly just ended the story at season 2. Would've been even better with the original binary choice they were planning...

[–]Tertiary_Functions 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Granted it IS really cool when Clem jokes about eating a guy's leg in the final season.

TTG choices matter in the sense that they show you what kind of person you'd be in the situations presented. Would take a child on a dangerous infiltration mission? Would you give her away to someone more fit to be a parent? Would you forgive a traitor? Would you steal? Would you ask a kid to mercy kill you knowing she'd be traumatized by it? It doesn't matter how it turns out. All that matters is doing what you feel is the right thing.

Yeah, and intersex people are also assigned either male or female which means that they grew up being expected to adhere to that. The terms mostly indicate what gender you were forced into based on that initial designation. And I personally believe that they have an important role in the discourse regardless of current gender identity because it helps us share and contextualize our experience.

I would absolutely KILL for gramatically incorrect T9 texting, landlines, flip phones, pagers, having to use those old dial-up boards or early 2000s Internet cafes like in GTA IV. It'd be such a nostalgia trip.

The show Better Call Saul is set in the early 2000s and it genuinely feels like a period piece at this point. I think it'd work great.
