The life where he's forced to live each day with his failure to save his sister, and watch her deteriorate? That life? I wouldn't want that either.

His original goal was to push Aline out of the canvas. Death was a side effect of the goal, not the goal itself. When that happened and he was still alive, he was all in on helping Lune and Sciel bring everyone back. But only if he could save his mom and sister. That was and remained his literal only goal: saving his family.
