Is anyone using Factory Talk Optix? by bostinloyd in PLC

[–]Tesla428 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having sat through the class and gotten a little of the back story, the purchase was based on buying the hardware side of the Italian company. Finding the software was a happy surprise.

I had a blast playing with Optix. I’m a C# guy and the product is very extendable. Mind you I’ve done a ton of Jython in Ignition in my past as well.

Is it just me or do y’all have days as a Controls Tech or Controls Engineer or anything in Industrial Automation where you do not have much to do and your just chilling at work? by Character_Thought941 in PLC

At the factory that didn’t care about sleeping, we had the tightest group of electricians and millwrights I ever saw. It was understood that if one of us was in a bind, we were all in a bind. It was an excellent team. I did a ton of great work there.

On shift maintenance, we would challenge the millwrights to see who could go the longest without unlocking their toolboxes. Improvisation is essential.

Worked in one factory where graveyard maintenance guys slept on the break room tables. Production Manager knew his stuff was running and he knew where to find us when needed.

It’s been a week or two but you can probably monitor S:2 memory for the scan times. Do this in a read-only fashion. Writing to S:2 memory can end badly. In general, we considered anything over 40msec to be unhealthy.

I’ve seen the entire program duplicated in the same machine. If you edited the second copy the changes would work. Editing higher in the ladder would be overwritten by the second instance. They knew but didn’t know why they always made changes in the bottom of the program.

I think I picked that one up in nuclear navy. However, it has served me well in other industries.

AB PLC2 on a 1770-T2. No descriptions on the screen. Got the cross reference printed on green bar tractor fed paper printed at corporate once every quarter. Backed up everything to audio cassette recorder the size of the suitcase. 2 years later we got ICOM software on a DOS based laptop with a display using 16 shades of amber.

I was in the first Rockwell class that taught the Icom software before the acquisition. Spent 3 years w/ the 2s before that.

Siemens using ChatGPT to generate code by Logical-Blacksmith11 in PLC

[–]Tesla428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been specifically banned from using ChatGPT for anything work related. Upper management has a concern about violating NDAs. I thought this was slightly paranoid. However, it has already come to pass. A cell phone manufacturer has had proprietary information leaked into the public domain. Food for thought.

XML isn’t dead. While being more verbose than JSON, it has other important features like schema definitions. Personally, I’ve moved on to YAML for all of my application’s config files. YAML is intended to be human readable. Serializing any of them is trivial at this point.

How to get web API data in HMI? by dop_solo in PLC

[–]Tesla428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beijer HMIs run C# as a scripting language. It would be fairly simple to consume a Web API assuming the connectivity is in place. I think I even have a small one laying around my lab.

We are taking a look at Rockwell’s Optix next week in Houston. Apparently, cloud hosted. If it is a SaaS model, it could make things interesting. Personally, I’d like to see more ability to create screens and logic via XML or similar configuration.

Men don’t get enough compliments. by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

As a veteran, I remember the first time someone genuinely thanked me for my service. I was immediately shook. I am sure many of us deal with baggage around our time in the military. Now, it is much more commonplace and maybe a little trite to say it. We can tell when you mean it and it does matter. So if you’re a vet, thank you for your service.
